Send us the final file, thank you Studies and Reviews N. 99 – Atlas of the maturity stages of Mediterranean fishery resources Preparation of this document his publication is part of the Studies and Reviews series of the General Fisheries TCommission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), which focuses on specific aspects of scientific interest for Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries. This atlas is the fruit of the coordinated work of 22 researchers from different scientific institutes and stems from an experience on fish maturity staging carried out at the Mediterranean level. It falls within one of the main targets of the mid-term strategy (2017–2020) towards the sustainability of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries implemented by the GFCM, which aims, among other things, to enhance knowledge and expertise on fisheries namely by strengthening data collection and information. Since 1984, several institutes in Italy have been involved in national and international scientific fisheries programmes, focused on the study of the biology, ecology, population dynamics and the assessment of the most important fishery resources, including Merluccius merluccius, Mullus barbatus and Sardina pilchardus. Since the beginning of 2000, biological, environmental, technical, and socio-economic data on fish catch have been regularly collected (including within the GFCM Data Collection Reference Framework [DCRF] and, at the European level, the Data Collection Framework [DCF]). Since the beginning of data collection, there has been a need for strong regional coordination on the methodology and maturity criteria and for a general agreement among maturity stagers and laboratories. In this context, a working group on fish maturity staging was created in 2014 under the supervision of the Società Italiana di Biologia Marina (SIBM). This atlas includes the main achievements of this working group. This document has been produced with the financial support of the European Union. The views expressed herein can in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of the European Union. iii Studies and Reviews N. 99 – Atlas of the maturity stages of Mediterranean fishery resources Abstract aturity is one of the most relevant biological parameters used in stock assessment Mprogrammes. Indeed, the macroscopic stage of gonadal development is an essential feature in estimating the maturity ogive and spawning stock biomass (SSB). It is also useful for determining the spawning season of a species and for monitoring long-term changes in the spawning cycle, as well as for many other research needs related to the biology of fish. In current data collection programmes carried out in the Mediterranean which cover extensive samplings of maturity stages, some specific technical aspects have not always been taken into consideration, and collected data cannot reach the required precision levels. Also, the coding schemes in use and the uncertainty in the interpretation of particular stages can give rise to misinterpretations of the actual maturity stage leading to inaccurate spawning stock biomass estimations. Several stock assessments are therefore based on time- invariant maturity ogives and only partially cover the spatial distribution of the stocks. Hence, on several occasions, the need has been expressed to improve the identification of the macroscopic maturity stages through a standardization of operational procedures and terminology. One of the solutions for overcoming these problems was to formalize an atlas of the macroscopic and histological maturity stages of the main species of commercial interest in the Mediterranean. In this context, this atlas aims to develop sound approaches to maturity sampling for a wide range of species, based on an accurate and precise determination of the different maturity stages. It includes macroscopic photos of gonads belonging to the main species, and for some of them, a validation-based histological analysis is also presented. All unreported estimates were added to the official data, as reported by the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Total reconstructed catch for 1950-2010 was around 170,000 t, which is 78% more than the amount reported by Syria to the FAO as their national catch. The unreported components added over 74,000 t of unreported catches, of which 38,600 t were artisanal landings, 16,000 t industrial landings, over 4,000 t recreational catches, 3,000 t subsistence catches and around 12,000 t were discards.

Multi-elemental signatures within the pre-hatch region of the stylet (an internal ‘shell’) were used to determine the common origins and levels of connectivity of individuals collected from 5 locations in Tasmania. To determine whether hatchling elemental signatures could be used as tags for natal ori- gin, hatchling stylets from 3 of the 5 locations were also analysed. We analyzed 12 elements using laser ablation inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA- ICPMS). Of the 12 elements, 7 were excellent spatial discriminators. There was evidence of high-level struc- turing with distinct groupings between all sites (the 2 closest being 85 km apart) within the adult O. pallidus Octopus pallidus, a holobenthic species found in south-east population, suggesting that all adults had hatched in or Australia near their respective collection sites.     Review Octopus Consciousness: The Role of Perceptual Richness Jennifer Mather Department of Psychology, University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, AB T1K 3M4, Canada; [email protected] Abstract: It is always difficult to even advance possible dimensions of consciousness, but Birch et al., 2020 have suggested four possible dimensions and this review discusses the first, perceptual richness, with relation to octopuses. They advance acuity, bandwidth, and categorization power as possible components. It is first necessary to realize that sensory richness does not automatically lead to perceptual richness and this capacity may not be accessed by consciousness. Octopuses do not discriminate light wavelength frequency (color) but rather its plane of polarization, a dimension that we do not understand. Their eyes are laterally placed on the head, leading to monocular vision and head movements that give a sequential rather than simultaneous view of items, possibly consciously planned. Details of control of the rich sensorimotor system of the arms, with 3/5 of the neurons of the nervous system, may normally not be accessed to the brain and thus to consciousness. The chromatophore-based skin appearance system is likely open loop, and not available to the octopus’ vision. Conversely, in a laboratory situation that is not ecologically valid for the octopus, learning about shapes and extents of visual figures was extensive and flexible, likely consciously planned. Similarly, octopuses’ local place in and navigation around space can be guided by light polarization plane and visual landmark location and is learned and monitored. The complex array of chemical cues delivered by water and on surfaces does not fit neatly into the components above and has barely been tested but might easily be described as perceptually rich.

Here, population structure of a holobenthic (i.e. direct developing) octopus, Octopus pal- lidus, was investigated genetically. This was compared to existing genetic data for a co-occurring merobenthic (i.e. planktonic larvae) species, Macroctopus maorum. Greater spatial genetic struc- turing was evident in O. pallidus than M. maorum. Patterns were consistent with isolation by dis- tance in O. pallidus, but appeared related to oceanographic circulation systems in M. maorum, suggesting distance-dependent adult dispersal and current-mediated larval dispersal, respec- tively. Genetic population structuring in O. pallidus also largely corroborated inferences based on stylet microchemistry, indicating the utility of these environmental signatures.
