  • Linkages Between Population Decline, Ageing and Land Consumption
Europ. Countrys. · 2· 2011 · p. 111-132 DOI: 10.2478/v10091-011-0007-y European Countryside MENDELU LANDSCAPES IN EASTERN GERMANY AT A TURNING POINT – LINKAGES BETWEEN POPULATION DECLINE, AGEING AND LAND CONSUMPTION Maria Moorfeld1 Received 30 March 2011; Accepted 23 September 2011 Abstract: Since 1990, eastern Germany has been facing not only economic transformation but also demographic change. Two components of demographic change are population decline and ageing. They have a strong influence on landscapes, for example on land consumption by housing and industry. Three rural case study areas in eastern Germany are analysed which have been facing a strong population decline and ageing process over the past 20 years. Expert interviews were carried out and statistics as well as documents were analysed. It is argued that demographic change can be seen as a characteristic of instability in social systems. Moreover, it is an important driving force of landscape change, weakening the socio-ecological resilience of landscapes. Keywords: demographic change, population decline, ageing, landscape change, land consumption by housing and industry, resilience of landscapes, Germany Zusammenfassung: Seit 1990 sind die neuen Bundesländer verstärkt vom ökonomischen und demographischen Wandel betroffen.

  • Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt)
Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt) axony-Anhalt is a state in the Snortheast of the Federal Republic of Germany, surrounded by the states of Brandenburg (to the northeast and east), Saxony (to the southeast), Thuringia (to the southwest and south), and Lower Saxony (to the west and northwest). Alarge part of the state was formerly Area 20,445 km2 / part of Saxony which, at that time, 7,894 sq miles Population 2.7 million also included the often partitioned state of Anhalt. It became a free state of the German Empire in 1918. In 1945 it became a province, and, in 1947, the state of Saxony-Anhalt was created, only to be broken up into districts in 1952. In 1990 the state of Saxony- Anhalt was finally reestablished. In terms of its population density and area, Saxony-Anhalt falls in the middle among the federal states. The north is more agricultural in character; the south, where the population density is somewhat higher than in the north, is more industrialized. The climate is influenced by its proximity to the sea and shows considerable variations due to a landscape which alternates from medium altitude mountain ranges to wide valleys. The north has abundant rainfall while the valleys of the rivers Saale, Unstrut, and Bode are among the driest areas in Germany. The state stretches along both sides of the River Elbe. The partially flat, partially gently rolling north with its great pine 282 forests (Altmark) is part of the north German lowlands. To the south, medium-sized mountain ranges begin. The highest mountain is the Brocken (1,142 m) in the eastern part of the Harz mountains.

Landmark 8 Wernigerode Castle ® On the 17th of November, 2015, during the 38th UNESCO General Assembly, the 195 member states of the United Nations resolved to introduce a new title. As a result, Geoparks can be distinguished as UNESCO Global Geoparks. Among the fi rst 120 UNESCO Global Geoparks, spread throughout 33 countries around the world, is Geopark Harz · Braunschweiger Land · Ostfalen. UNESCO-Geoparks are clearly defi ned, unique areas, in which locations and landscapes of international geological importance are found. They are operated by organisations which, with the involvement of the local population, campaign for the protection of geological heritage, for environmental education and for sustainable regional development. 22 Königslutter 28 ® 1 cm = 16,15 miles 20 Oschersleben 27 18 14 Goslar Halberstadt 3 2 8 1 QuedlinburgQ 4 OsterodeOsterodedee a.H.a.Ha 9 11 5 131 15 16 6 10 17 19 7 Sangerhausen NordhausenNdh 12 21 As early as 2004, 25 Geoparks in Europe and China had founded the Global Geoparks Network (GGN). Historism 1 Wernigerode Castle Originally, a medieval fortress crowned the promontory of the Agnesberg. After the devastating ravages of the 30-Years-War (1618 – 1648), the work of reconstructing the fortress as a Baroque residence castle began under the Count ERNST OF STOLBERG-WERNIGERODE (1716 – 1778).
