Walk from York Way to the Rosemary Branch
From York Way to The Rosemary Branch This walk marks the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Regent’s Canal in 1820. It is part of a series of Islington walks devised by Andrew Clayton that draws on the research of the volunteers that took part in the Listed Islington project. This reviewed and revised the 1600 or so locally listed buildings in the borough. The walk takes us from the Conservation Area of Regent’s Canal West, over the hill along White Lion Street to the Angel, and down Duncan Street to re-join the canal as it emerges at the east facing portal. We end at the Rosemary Branch, scene of the notable 2019 Islington Society annual dinner. The walk starts at the steps down from the bridge on York Way over the canal. The trusty 390 bus provides convenient access to the tow path on the left-hand side of the canal. The canal was engineered and designed by James Morgan, who was an assistant to the architect John Nash. Neither Morgan nor Nash were experienced canal engineers and there were many financial and technical problems as the canal was built. But it became one of the most successful parts of the British canal system, linking the Grand Union with the Thames at Limehouse. As you walk along on the left there are sections of the original retaining wall constructed when the canal was first built, or shortly after. On the other side of the canal, after King’s Place, Battlebridge Basin and Ice Wharf, is Regent’s Wharf, the most important group of industrial buildings on the Islington section of the canal. -

The Forum's Core Values and Objectives are stated as follows: "The rediscovery of the Waterside in Brentford is putting intense pressure on the water front. There is growing competition for access to the river and canal sides; pressure is mounting to create new economic activities and provide residential development on the waters edge. These pressures jeopardise both existing businesses and the right of Brentford people to access the water, which is part of their heritage. Access to the waterside in Brentford is made possible by the changing economic and commercial use of the water. 4. The role of the Waterside Forum is: to provide informed comment on proposed developments or changes. Brentford Waterside Forum will work with and through agencies to achieve the following: — A strategic context for waterside decision making. — To protect access to the waterside, its infrastructure and the water itself for people to use for recreation, enjoyment and business, emphasising business that need a waterside location to be successful. -

Section three is a satisfying stretch along the Regent's Canal, from famous Camden Lock to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. This section highlights the contrasts of a living, growing capital, meandering between old districts and new developments, each with their own unique style and atmosphere. This section of the route takes the walker through Camden Town, Islington, Hackney and Bethnal Green, leading finally to Victoria Park. This provides a fascinating look at how London is changing; passing many new developments and constructions, while savouring the atmosphere of the canal. In some ways the towpath side has changed little, whereas the south side of the canal has developed a great deal. For walkers interested in the history of London's canals you will pass near the London Canal Museum on this section. Look out for the Jubilee Greenway discs in the pavement as you go round. Continues below Directions. To start section three from section two, continue along the towpath past Camden Lock Market. Cyclists have to dismount through the market area here. Coming from Camden Town station, turn left, cross over the road and the bridge to find the towpath on the north side of the canal. Once on the canal towpath, pass rows of Vespa Scooters used as cafe seats and a large bronze lion, as well as many food stalls. -

Talk 9: At Last a Celebration Eight months after the money needed for completion of the Regents Canal had been raised all was ready to open the link between Paddington and Limehouse. In May 1820 subscribers were told the Grand Junction had promised to provide 100 locks of water immediately and 800 over the coming months, so the dry, wide and deep trench beyond Camden was ready to be turned into a working canal. The well laid brickwork, the carefully crafted swing bridges, the heavy, newly finished lock gates and the freshly gravelled towpath would have allowed those associated with the whole project, from the ordinary day labourer, who may not have been born when the Grand Junction branch canal was opened, to John Nash, now nearly 70, to share in a sense of achievement. There was little time for sentiment because, after so many years, there was no time to be lost in generating a proper income, but when the day was set for the official opening, few would have grumbled at the cost of organising a proper celebration. Earlier in the year, on the death of his father, the Prince Regent had become king and so, shortly before the great day it was George the Fourth who sent an expression of His Majesties gratification at the completion of the great and useful work which, so he said, promised so much commercial advantage to the metropolis and such facility to the general commerce of the Empire. By nine o’clock, on August 1st, a crowd gathered at Battles Bridge, where the waterborne procession was scheduled to leave from the Maiden Lane basin. -

Waterways Museum EDMUND LEONARD SNEE, SECRETARY AND ACCOUNTANT TO THE REGENT’S CANAL COMPANY FOR 52 YEARS (The Father) Edmund Leonard and Mary Snee were the grandparents of two very young children who were buried in Holy Trinity, Cloudesley Square in 1835 and 1837. This is a snapshot into the lives of Edmund and his son Frederick who both worked for the Regent’s Canal Company. Extract from the website of The London Canal Museum “…..One was Edmund Snee, the Secretary, who was to faithfully serve the company for 52 years,……Snee’s son was also to serve the canal company in an administrative capacity, his employment lasting 45 years.” A Topographical Dictionary of London and its Environs Regent’s Canal Company Office is at 98, Great Russel Street, Bloomsbury. The business of this company, whose canal reaches from The Grand Junction Canal at Paddington, to the Thames at Limehouse, is conducted by a committee of fourteen proprietors, of whom the Earl of Macclesfield is Chairman….and Edmund Leonard Snee, Esquire., Secretary. RE-PRICING OF 12 MONTH MOORING PERMITS 2015 MOORINGS AREA REPORT FOR LONDON Introduction This report provides the rationale for mooring price decisions for 2015. VAT is payable at the rate set by the government for the date when the permit is purchased. Profiles of privately operated sites in the area are appended. We researched and compared their prices with the Canal & River Trust rates to inform our judgements, but because this data is commercially sensitive it has not been included. Local market overview The London group has been defined as sites broadly within the M25 area but also includes the Rivers Lee and Stort which partly extend beyond this boundary, along with a length of the Grand Union Canal in similar circumstance. It also includes the Rivers Thames and Wey (not Trust waterways). There is some diversity of product within the area, from narrowboats and small cruisers found predominantly on the Grand Union, Regents Canal and Lee & Stort, to Docklands and the tidal Thames, frequented by large sea-going craft. There is also a mixture of mooring uses – leisure, ‘pied à terre’ and residential mooring sites. Including Canal & River Trust directly managed moorings, the London market area has approximately 2800 moorings on the GU Canal, Paddington Branch, Slough Arm, Regents Canal, Rivers Lee and Stort and London Docklands. We estimate that there are circa 4,000 moorings within the local market not managed by the Trust; these include those located in marinas along the tidal Thames, the non-tidal Thames and the River Wey. Given the predominantly urban nature of the of the market area, and high land values coupled with the prospect of greater profitability from land-based developments, the creation of new large-scale mooring sites continues to be relatively unattractive to landowners. -
