Nice will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Chagall Museum and 50th anniversary of the Matisse Museum, but will also be honouring Picasso and Cocteau for the 40th and 50th anniversary of their deaths. Many of the Riviera’s towns and villages will be involved in this commemoration, while places where these artists lived or worked and Museums remember his personalities and their unique talent. Moreover, cinematographic news is also focusing on Renoir, who lived in Cagnes-sur-Mer, with a film of the same name retracing the end of his life. ARTISTS & THE CÔTE D’AZUR, IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF GREAT PAINTERS 4 5 MATISSE MUSEUM IN NICE IN THE FOOTSTEPS Housed since 1963 in Villa des Arènes, a 17th-century Genoanstyle palace, the Matisse Museum features a permanent collection today with 68 paintings and gouache cut-outs, 236 drawings, 218 prints, 57 sculptures OF MATISSE (virtually all his sculptures), 14 illustrated books, 95 photographs, 187 TH ANNIVERSARY OF of his personal possessions, silkscreen prints, tapestries, ceramics, stainglass windows and documents. CHAPELLE DU ROSAIRE AND VILLA MATISSE IN VENCE… Chapelle du Rosaire, the Chapel of the Rosary, a masterpiece designed by Henri Matisse, remains a truly unique religious monument. From 1948 to 1951, Matisse prepared the plans for the structure and all the decorative details: stained glass, ceramics, stalls, stoups, liturgical objects, vestments... For the fi rst time, a painter designed an entire monument, from the architecture to the furniture and stained-glass windows. The painter Auguste Renoir discovered Cagnes in 1898 and returned there regularly. In 1907, charmed by the farm and its olive trees, he purchased Domaine des Colle es, where he built his home. He spent the winter season there until his death in 1919. This was one of the most fruitful periods in his career despite his poor state of health. He dedicated his time to painting portraits, nudes and landscapes, inspired by the Mediterranean light and vegetation. It was also in Cagnes that he made sculptures, interpreting the motifs of his paintings in three dimensions with the help of Richard Guino.

Since it was acquired by the City of Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1960, the house has become the Renoir Museum whose collection includes not only furniture and personal possessions recounting the life of the family, but also paintings, sculptures and drawings by the Master and his entourage. Thus, the public can discover original works while appreciating the atmosphere in which the artist created them. The Museum includes furnished rooms, exhibition areas and the park where views of the sea and the mediaeval town of Haut-de-Cagnes can be seen through the branches of olive, orange and mimosa trees.

The Comté de Nice and neighbouring regions have preserved a large number of fi ne works by 15th and early 16th-century painters, some of whom were greatly infl uenced by the Renaissance. From 1430 to the affi rmation of Baroque art, these works cover more than a century, a true golden age. Our Lady of Mercy (Vierge de Miséricorde) by Jean Miralhet (1430), an altarpiece in the chapel of the Black Penitents in Nice, who commissioned the work, is the oldest and certainly one of the fi nest examples of the International Gothic style in the Alpes-Maritimes département. The most recent works are by François Bréa (fl . circa 1555) in the church of Saint-Martin d’Entraunes and the cathedral of Sospel, and the retable of Saint Michael in Menton, painted by Antoine Manchiello in 1565 according to the precepts of the Counter-Reformation. Louis Brea, the uncle of François, is the best known of these painters. Thus, in the Comté de Nice (from Briançonnet to Lucéram) and on the Italian Riviera (mainly from Taggia to Genoa), these panel paintings, some of which are among the fi nest of their day, have contributed their beauty to the “Alpes d’Azur” for fi ve centuries.
