INSPIRING GREATNESS COVID-19

On 15 March 2020, a national state of disaster was declared in South Africa in light of the COVID-19 outbreak. In keeping with the instructions of the President of the Republic of South Africa, the Honourable Cyril Ramaphosa, per a public address delivered on 23 March 2020, the Republic of South Africa was placed under lockdown from Thursday, 26 March 2020.

While the lockdown levels have been amended over time, regulations related to the current lockdown level remain in force. After due consideration of all on-going health and safety protocols, a decision was made to virtually confer all Degrees and Diplomas, and the virtual ceremonies were broadcasted between 25 and 28 May 2021. The University retained the original approved Graduation dates and programmes for record purposes. The findings suggested that, job stress, ineffective and insufficient sleep patterns as well as work overload impacted negatively on the lives of employees. The findings are acutely relevant for the refinement and further development of the maritime policy. It proposes amendments to Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013

The results indicated that when competitive strategies are applied as a unit and are moderated by the resources, they positively affect the SMEs’ high performance. Law Thesis: Towards establishing the ‘security laws’ interpretation regime’ which will facilitate the interpretation of state security laws in a manner that upholds and protects the rule of law and human rights: A South African perspective Citation: The study critically examines South Africa’s state security and emergency laws, and thereafter concludes that there emerge certain unique techniques which operate to bolster the interpretation of the usually broad and vague state security laws in a manner that upholds and protects the rule of law and human rights. Taken together, these techniques constitute what in the thesis is termed the ‘security laws’ interpretation regime’ Supervisor: Professor SV Hoctor Longunza-Malassi, Joseph, BLaws(University of Mbandaka), LLM �� Law Thesis: The climate change and freshwaters nexus: Possible implications for water treaties on the transboundary tributaries of the Congo river Citation: Climate change will cause a seasonal increase of about 15 percent of the Congo River basin’s run-off, and a rise of about 17 percent of its discharge. In an attempt to comprehend the implications of such increase on the region’s transboundary water law, this study has undertaken a comparative analysis of flood management regimes, and formulated recommendations that aim at improving the Congo basin’s legal preparedness to climate change impacts Supervisor: Professor MA Kidd Luthuli, Malusi Kenneth, BSocSc, BSocScHons, MSocSc ��Leadership Studies Thesis: Developing a framework for project status reporting in South African State- Owned companies Citation: This study identified several challenges facing South African state-owned companies during project status reporting. The study developed a framework for project status reporting in South African state-owned companies to assist stakeholders in their reporting. To assist in problem solving, the framework

Data was collected from participants selected through non- probability sampling techniques. The results indicate that the rural nature of the municipality, the chosen service delivery model, a lack of skilled practitioners and ineffective leadership militates against the service delivery value chain of the Municipality. Thus, the study developed a service delivery framework towards improving service delivery. Law Thesis: Battered, dejected, ejected and rejected: The rights of HIV positive women to be protected from violence in Eswatini Citation: The study investigated whether Eswatini’s legal and policy framework is cognisant of the nexus between violence and HIV. It adopted a desktop and empirical research – and found that violence against HIV positive women was multifaceted and involved a wide range of perpetrators; violence and HIV were inextricably interconnected, that women saw legal remedies to be inadequate. The justice system, policymakers and NGOs will have information and formulate prevention strategies. Supervisor: Professor AE Strode Nkwanyana, Nkosinathi Trevor, BCom(Brenau University), MCom(Wits) ��Leadership Studies Thesis: Business Process Re-engineering Implementation in the South African Public Sector: A Case Study of Operation Phakisa II in the Department of Health (DOH) Citation: This study examined the implementation of business process reengineering (BPR) which is the organisational transformation philosophy underlying Operation Phakisa II or the Ideal Clinic Realisation and Maintenance Programme in the Department of Health. The findings revealed that performance success

in BPR implementation is influenced by the availability of a comprehensive implementation plan, change management, deployment of an IT based evaluation system to monitor the progress and the motivation of employees. Law Thesis: Constitutional reform in Zimbabwe: The role of the new constitutional court in the transformation of civil and political rights. Citation: The thesis investigated the prospects of the transformation of civil and political rights through the courts in Zimbabwe. The concepts of transformative constitutionalism and transformative adjudication were relied on. It recommended that the Constitutional Court of Zimbabwe draw lessons from the adjudication techniques of the South African and Kenyan courts in order to transform human rights in the country. Doctor of Business Administration Amrithlal, Prathana, MBA(MANCOSA) Thesis: Development of a male grooming framework to improve male shopper behaviour relating to the purchase of personal care products Citation: The metrosexual trend has exploded as men are vigilant of their self-image. Despite this global boom, a scarcity of research on male personal care exists. Male shopping behaviour and whether merchandise solutions improve basket-size has been tested for the first time through this study using a quasi-experimental approach. The outlook and preference of male shoppers and benefits of in-store theatre was discovered; with prodigious insight to manufacturers and consumers. Supervisor: Dr E Mutambara Dlamini, Wilson Bafana, BCom (ULesotho), MBL(UNISA) Thesis: Balanced scorecard usage as a performance measurement tool for Eswatini hotel and tourism SME’s growth strategy Citation: The study examined Balanced Scorecard (BSC) usage as a performance measurement tool in Eswatini hotel and tourism SMEs. A mixed research method was adopted to conduct the study. The results revealed that Eswatini hotel and tourism SMEs used the BSC perspectives. This tool enhanced the growth of this sector for years unnoticed. The research recommends an implementation framework management should adapt to introduce the BSC model in the sector. Kraai, Nthabiseng Innocentia, BSc(NWU), MBA(MANCOSA) Thesis: Evaluation of the National Development Agency’s training on improving governance of Non-Profit Organisations Citation: The study adopted the Kirkpatrick model to assess the effectiveness of the National Development Agency’s training on improving governance of NPOs in South Africa. The results suggest that factors such as trainees’ change in behaviour and training content affect training effectiveness. Trainees’ reactions and training design have an adverse impact on the training outcomes. The research contributes to the evaluation of training programmes through development of a training evaluation framework. Supervisor: Dr P Mashau Malgas, Maphelo, BTech(DUT), MBA Thesis: Developing a business intervention model for South African small business retailers in Cape Town’s Township retailing environments Citation: This study identified the challenges facing local traders in township retailing environments. The study employed a mixed method research approach in which two groups participated, namely, local and migrant traders operating in the South African townships. The study recommends that South African government agencies must implement the proposed three-stage business intervention model (Incubation, Finance, Training and Development) to assist local traders to improve their trading capabilities Supervisor: Dr W B Zondi Mukwawaya, Owen Zivanai, BComHns(UNISA), MBA(UL) Thesis: Developing an integrated talent management strategy for Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in Pretoria, South Africa Citation: The thesis proposed the development of an integrated talent management strategy for Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU). The study used a mixed methodology in which data was collected by means of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that talent management practices at SMU are poorly applied; therefore, the management of the university needs to urgently address this in order to attract and retain talented staff. Supervisors: Professor CN Proches and Professor PEG Green Muller, Craig Ross, BCom, PGDip(Mgt), MBA Thesis: A leadership skills development model for the Kwaden group: A case study of an African FMCG business-network Citation: Organisations competing in Africa face numerous challenges. To successfully address these challenges a scaled approach to leadership skills development is required. A theoretically relevant and empirically validated conceptual model was postulated for an African FMCG business-network to develop leadership skills throughout Africa. The results show that leadership skills

The study used a mixed method triangulation strategy for data collection and analysis. It revealed that there is an overwhelming agreement that such a framework has a significant impact on operational efficiencies at Amcor. The Graduation Ceremony

The graduation ceremony has a long history and is steeped in tradition. It dates back to the establishment of the first universities in Europe in the 12th century. The Chancellor “Chancellor” is an office that goes back to Roman times: the original chancellor or cancellarius (as the office was known), regulated access to the Roman Tribune. In medieval times, the office became associated with the heads of writing departments of the early kings. Because so few people were literate, a chancellor was necessarily learned. This is why the heads and spokespersons of the early universities were also accorded this title. More recently the office has become largely symbolic and the executive head of a university is its vice-chancellor. One of the Chancellor’s primary roles is to confer degrees at the graduation ceremonies.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng is the third Chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The Mace The University of KwaZulu-Natal Mace was designed and executed by local sculptor Mr Zamokakhwe Gumede and is carved from an indigenous wood, Drakensberg bottlebrush (umBande), gathered from the artist’s home near Bergville.

The head of the Mace is made up of three opened book-like forms, suggestive of scholarship but also of the massive landscape forms of our province, onto each of which is placed a ruler, a pen and a pencil. These refer respectively to the scientific and computational, the text-based and the creative sides to the University’s work. Below this are an encircling set of heads, representing the diverse university community. The whole is surmounted by an alighting secretary bird (iNtungunono), an elegant and active bird found throughout the province and equally at home on land or in the air. At the foot of the Mace is a hoof-like shape, giving a sense of contact with the soil of Africa.

The carrying of the mace in the procession symbolises the university’s status as a degree awarding institution. Academic Dress The wearing of gowns by judges, ministers, teachers and scholars is an ancient and significant custom. By wearing a gown when receiving their degrees and diplomas, the graduating student participates in this long tradition and joins hands with students past and present.

The hood conveys the most amount of information with the addition of braid or coloured linings differentiating the different qualifications. The colour of the band or hood lining represents the College, each of which has its own colour.

Convocation The Convocation of the University of KwaZulu-Natal is the statutory body consisting of all alumni and the academic staff (current and retired) of the University. On graduation, graduates and diplomates automatically become members of Convocation which is the largest stakeholder body with over 140 000 members. Convocation provides a link with graduates, past and present, and through this structure graduates have the opportunity to play a continuing role in the affairs of the University.

After being capped by the Chancellor, each graduate moves across the stage and hands the hood to the Robing officer who represents the Convocation of the University. The Robing officer places the hood upon the graduate’s shoulders and, in so doing, symbolises acceptance into the Convocation of UKZN.

The University Logo The original University Logo was officially launched on 27 February 2004 and it is a powerful visual symbol through which the University projects an image of excellence. In addition, it emphasises the University’s standing and integrity within the province of KwaZulu-Natal and within the academic and business communities, at home and abroad. Above all, it provides an identity around which internal stakeholders – staff and students – unite.

The African shield symbolises the protection of our most valuable assets, namely, education, culture and, by extension, African scholarship. The globe with multi-coloured rays epitomises a rising sun, a new beginning and acts as a symbol of enlightenment.

Further, the globe represents the University as a global player, producing world-class graduates, while the multi- coloured rays embody diversity – race, culture, language – as well as social values. The book/wave/wings, which underscore the visual, represent the foundation of knowledge, the spirit of the eastern seaboard, and soaring to new heights. the University logo represents a University that is rooted in and responsive to Africa’s unique qualities, challenges, diversities and strengths, while, at the same time, nurturing and protecting African Scholarship.

On 3 June 2010 the current logo, with the isiZulu translation was approved.
