Surrealists like Man Ray began to use photography to create surrealist images meant to destroy preconceived notions of photography as a form of realism or naturalism. -Photo-surrealist artists like Skoglund use processes like double exposure, solarization, combination printing and montage to create dream like, but still reality-based images. Artistic Process: “Since the eighties, I have been fascinated with interiors and invading these interiors with problems and interruptions usually by animals. The animal presence to me is the link between ourselves and the natural world.” -Skoglund uses a technique called Tableau Photography - Tableau Photography allows Skoglund to push something that is three-dimensional and turn it into something two-dimensional - She designs and fabricates the staged environments, called installations. - The installations range in different colors and materials and incorporate visual elements such as live models - After the room is created she brings the models and takes the photograph before destroying the tableau - She directs the models to achieve the look or vision she was going for - She purposely puts an overflow of material to fill up the space. “This gives the room a surrealistic dream-like quality”(Reynolds). - She could spend six months to a year planning and creating each installation - Skoglund carries around a little notebook with her at all times. In this book she writes down the thoughts and ideas she comes up with for future installations and subject matter.
