by Lisa Christensen STAFF WRITER LATE NIGHT ON THE LAKE A carjacking and shooting in West Wendover, Nev., on Saturday has been traced back to a couple thought to have killed two people in Mount Pleasant. And a joint law enforcement effort resulted in their arrest today. Logan McFarland, a 24-year-old Heber City man, and Angela Hill, a 25-year-old Fairview woman also known as Angela Atwood, were arrested at approximately 1:20 p.m. in a remote area of Elko County, Nev., near Wells, by deputies from the Elko County Sheriff’s Office, according to a press release from the West Wendover Police Department. The arrests were made without incident. McFarland and Hill are suspected of murdering Leroy and Dorotha Ann Fullwood, ages 70 and 69, respectively, as part of a home invasion of the elderly couple’s Mt. Pleasant residence. The Fullwoods’ bodies were found on Saturday, but police believe they were killed Friday night. The couple are also believed to be behind an attempted car- jacking in West Wendover on Saturday. At a little before 7 a.m., West Wendover police were notified of a carjacking in progress. At almost the same time, a 35-year-old woman arrived at the West Wendover Police Department with a gunshot wound to the head — the victim of that attempted carjacking, according to Sgt. Dave Wiskerchen of the West Wendover Police Department. “After the shots were fired here in West Wendover and she was able to get away from the attackers, she was able to regain control of her vehicle and come to the police station,” Wiskerchen said. The woman gave officers a brief statement before being trans- ported to a Salt Lake-area hospital, he said. She was originally listed in critical condition, but has since improved. “She’s no longer in critical condition, she’s no longer in the [Intensive Care Unit],” Wiskerchen said. “She’s in stable condition and expected to make a full and complete recovery.” Maegan Burr The West Wendover Police Department, Nevada Highway Patrol, Elko County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshal’s Office were all North Tooele County Firefighter Kirk Arnold (left) and Matt Caldwell (far right) walk with duck hunters Jeff Christensen (second from left) and Clark Allan along involved with the investigation in Nevada, while the Mt. But Campbell, who with a few other local volunteers who has been attempting to control the county’s feral population through a method referred to as TNR, or trap, neuter and return, said she is hopeful that future generations of feral kittens will be reduced this coming spring. Over the past year, Campbell said she has neutered over 300 feral cats, and she is aware of volunteers who have about 1,000 others. Once neutered and vac- cinated, the captured cats are then turned loose on farms or ranches, where they help keep mice at bay. Since the average feral cat has a life span of only three to five years, Campbell said the local population should eventually begin to decrease to a more manageable size with continu- ing TNR efforts. The Tooele City Animal Shelter doesn’t usually get an influx of feral cats until the spring and fall, when kittens are born. The shelter hasn’t seen as many ferals since the weather cooled, but that doesn’t mean the problem has abated, according to Tooele It’s nice to have Animal Shelter manager Tawny Dewsnup. great emergency Although the shelter has little to do with the colonies, care close by. Voice of Tooele County since 1894

OUR VIEW by the Transcript-Bulletin editorial board Our wish list for 2012 In relative terms, 2011 was not such a bad year. The economy seemed to stabilize after a debilitating recession, and there were plenty of signs of growth to boot. Unemployment retreated from the all-time high levels it hit at the end of 2009. We made progress toward some of the items on last year’s wish list, such as more job creation locally and our high schools competing well in sports in their new region. However, we fell short on others, such as getting our own senate seat out of the redistricting process and moving to non-partisan county elections. This year, the wish list mirrors the times — modestly hopeful. • Low gas prices It’s debatable whether any single factor affects our economy and lifestyle more than gas prices. Right now they’re low — under $3 at many local stations. If they stay low, commuters, which comprise just under half the county’s work- force, end up with more disposable income. Costs likewise drop for everyone from transportation companies to the school district. We’re more mobile, more likely to take driving vacations. • A light footprint from Rocky Mountain Power This might be a pipe dream. A trip up Settlement Canyon this winter can’t help but fill one with foreboding. Wide access roads have been carved across pristine hillsides, groves of Gambel oak have been clear-cut, and giant pads have been gouged out for transmission towers that will span the mouth of the canyon. The access roads are just as ugly on Tooele’s southeast bench — the area thought to have been spared by a deal between Tooele City and RMP. We hope this transmission line won’t blight our beautiful mountains as much as LETTERS TO THE EDITOR has been predicted, but we fear the worst. • Fiscal restraint in government (again) In last year’s wish list, we criticized Tooele County for going on a building LETTERS POLICY spree over the last half of the previous decade. Tooele woman has spent more than two decades helping prison inmates and non-traditional students reach their educational goals

hances are that anyone who has attended Utah State University's regional campus in Tooele within the past 23 years has probably met, and maybe even been advised by, Joyce Allen. Allen, who attended USU herself and graduated with a composite degree in physical education and health, started work- ing for USU's Tooele campus in 1988, first as a nighttime facilitator and later as an office coordinator. Working for her alma mater was not always what the Tooele woman thought she wanted to do — before she started at the campus, she had decided on becoming either a P.E. teacher or coach. “I wanted to give back to the coaching field because I was always an athlete grow- ing up,” she said. “But back then when they told you to follow your heart, they didn't explain that there was only one P.E. teacher per school, and they stayed there for 30 years. They really wanted me to have some experience when I was looking for a job.” Luckily, soon after starting her career at USU's Tooele campus, Allen got a second job as a coach for 9th- and 10th-grade girls' volleyball and basketball at Tooele High School. She coached for 10 years, all the while still working for USU, but in 1992 her job description at USU changed quite dra- matically. “I worked for USU, but I was working for them out at the prison,” Allen said. “I ran their program there for 13 years.” Allen worked with inmates in three of the prison's facilities: women's, minimum secu- rity and medium security.
