For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Introduction Bollywood in Australia Andrew Hassam and Makand Paranjape The global context of Bollywood in Australia Makarand Paranjape The transcultural character and reach of Bollywood cinema has been gradually more visible and obvious over the last two decades. What is less understood and explored is its escalating integration with audiences, markets and entertainment industries beyond the Indian subcontinent. This book explores the relationship of Bollywood to Australia. We believe that this increasingly important relationship is an outcome of the convergence between two remarkably dynamic entities—globalising Bollywood, on the one hand and Asianising Australia, on the other. If there is a third element in this relationship, which is equally important, it is the mediating power of the vibrant diasporic community of South Asians in Australia. Hence, at its most basic, this book explores the conjunctures and ruptures between these three forces: Bollywood, Australia and their interface, the diaspora. 1 Bollywood in Australia It would be useful to see, at the outset, how Bollywood here refers not only to the Bombay film industry, but is symbolic of the Indian and even the South Asian film industry. -

Ifu Aur Main
IRRFAN AND I Written by Vishal BhardwajTimes Delhi INT. MY HOME - DAY SUPER: 29TH APRIL 2020 It’s lockdown in Mumbai. I have been working from home for the past one month. The phone rings. It flashes M.P’s name on the screen. It gives me tremors. M.P is supposed to be my informer in Irrfan’s agency. I let the phone ring for a while and then take the call fearing the worst. A beat. M.P. He has started improving. Man, this guy is a hell of a fighter. Doctors are hopeful that he will bounce back. I take a deep breath and cut the line. LITTLE LATER I argue with Rekha for serving me less PANEER in last night’s dinner. I complain to her of being biased when it comes to choosing between me and Aasmaan. My phone beeps. I check my WhatsApp messenger (still bickering with Rekha). It’s a message from a friend from America. It reads - ‘Saddened to hear about Irrfan Khan’. I check my Twitter (Still squabbling fiercely with Rekha) to verify the authenticity of it. No news. I rule out the possibility. Times I bring myself to hear what Rekha is saying with tears in her eyes. REKHA What kind of pettiness is this? The phone rings again. It’s M.P once more. I pick it up hurriedly this time. There are sobs on the other side. A bomb explodesDelhi in my heart. CUT TO: EXT. ROAD TO GRAVEYARD - DAY Face masked with a N95 mask and hands covered with a pair of surgical gloves, I travel in my car on the deserted road leading to the Muslim cemetery. -

Masculinity in Children’s Film The Academy Award Winners Author: Natalie Kauklija Supervisor: Mariah Larsson Examiner: Tommy Gustafsson Spring 2018 Film Studies Bachelor Thesis Course Code 2FV30E Abstract This study analyzes the evolution of how the male gender is portrayed in five Academy Award winning animated films, starting in the year 2002 when the category was created. Because there have been seventeen award winning films in the animated film category, and there is a limitation regarding the scope for this paper, the winner from every fourth year have been analyzed; resulting in five films. These films are: Shrek (2001), Wallace and Gromit (2005), Up (2009), Frozen (2013) and Coco (2017). The films selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the Animated Feature film category tend to be both critically and financially successful, and watched by children, young adults, and adults worldwide.
