Padre’s Page ~ 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ January 17, 2016

Dear Friends,

This week we focus our prayers, thoughts, words and works on our Christian duty to promote justice and peace. First, on Monday we remember and celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is quite easy for me to think of a God of love mainly because I grew up in a family where love was central and where lovely relationships were ever present. . . . Even though I have never had an abrupt conversion experience, religion has been real to me and closely knitted to life. In fact the two cannot be separated; religion for me is life. – Martin Luther King, Jr., “Autobiography of Religious Development,” 1950

Indeed, it was MLK’s faith and love that moved him to work for justice in racial equality, overturning unjust laws and transforming our nation for the better. (Please note that our parish offices are closed for the holiday and no parish activities– except Masses–are scheduled.)

Of course the gravest injustice in our country today, sanctioned by fundamentally unjust laws, is the killing of unborn children by abortion, against which we prayerfully march this Friday in the annual national March for Life in Washington. I urge those who can march to join us, and I urge those who are unable to march, and all our parishioners, to spend some time in prayer and fasting on Tuesday for our just cause. Our parish will also join the Diocese of Arlington’s Office of Young Adult Ministry in co-hosting a “Vigil for Life” this Thursday (starting at 7:00 P.M.), offering Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Confessions, public prayer of the Rosary, and fellowship time. Check this bulletin for more specific information.

Our parish FORUM fostering a culture of encounter continues this Friday, December 22, with our monthly live music concert featuring both “The Accidentals” and “Kevin Heider” and their eclectic acoustic sounds. Happy hour starts at 7:00 P.M. and the music begins at 8:00 P.M. Join us most Fridays as we feature cultural events which bring people together. The full schedule is available at: www.arlingtonforum.org. I remain, Your servant in Christ Jesus, Father Don

PLEASE CONTINUE TO BRING DONATIONS FOR THE FOOD PANTRY What comes in goes out by the end of the week! In addition to the regular items, we are in desperate need of peanut butter and jelly, canned fruit without sugar, pancake mix “complete,” and spaghetti sauce. Donations of smaller sized jars are preferred, since many of those who come for food travel by bus. Thank you for helping to feed the hungry. Can’t shop? Consider a monetary donation (checks payable to St. Charles Church, memo: food pantry; or online through Faith Direct, donate through Parish Charities and note: food pantry).

SPECIAL COLLECTION ~ JANUARY 15-16 ~ DUE TO RECENT STORMS AND FLOODING In recent weeks, severe weather – in the form of tornados, violent storms and flooding – has impacted the South and Midwest. Additional major flooding is expected over the next several weeks, as rivers and tributaries continue to rise. As the weather grows colder, communities may have to contend with freezing and icing of their initial flood damage. While the poor are the hardest hit by these conditions, many will have vast unmet needs. For this reason, the USCCB has asked that we take up a special collection to help address the humanitarian and Church needs arising from these storms and for other disasters that can be anticipated in the U.S. this year. In the Diocese of Arlington, this collection will be taken up on January 15-16. The funds collected in this special appeal will support the efforts of Catholic Charities USA as it and its member agencies respond to immediate emergency needs as well as the long term need to rebuild and recover after widespread destruction, and to the U.S. Conference of Catholic for pastoral and reconstruction needs of the Church.

2016 BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL BEGINS! This month many of us will receive a mailing from Bishop Loverde regarding the 2016 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA). The theme for the 2016 BLA is “Go forth as heralds of God’s mercy.” After reflecting upon the many blessings that God has given you, please prayerfully consider making a pledge of support to this important appeal that funds many programs and ministries that serve the people in our diocese. Every pledge is an expression of God’s love and mercy!
