Thomas S. Herbert VII Padre’s Page ~ 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ January 17, 2016 Dear Friends, This week we focus our prayers, thoughts, words and works on our Christian duty to promote justice and peace. First, on Monday we remember and celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. It is quite easy for me to think of a God of love mainly because I grew up in a family where love was central and where lovely relationships were ever present. Even though I have never had an abrupt conversion experience, religion has been real to me and closely knitted to life. In fact the two cannot be separated; religion for me is life. – Martin Luther King, Jr., “Autobiography of Religious Development,” 1950 Indeed, it was MLK’s faith and love that moved him to work for justice in racial equality, overturning unjust laws and transforming our nation for the better. (Please note that our parish offices are closed for the holiday and no parish activities– except Masses–are scheduled.) Of course the gravest injustice in our country today, sanctioned by fundamentally unjust laws, is the killing of unborn children by abortion, against which we prayerfully march this Friday in the annual national March for Life in Washington. I urge those who can march to join us, and I urge those who are unable to march, and all our parishioners, to spend some time in prayer and fasting on Tuesday for our just cause. Our parish will also join the Diocese of Arlington’s Office of Young Adult Ministry in co-hosting a “Vigil for Life” this Thursday (starting at 7:00 P.M.), offering Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Confessions, public prayer of the Rosary, and fellowship time. Check this bulletin for more specific information. Our parish FORUM fostering a culture of encounter continues this Friday, December 22, with our monthly live music concert featuring both “The Accidentals” and “Kevin Heider” and their eclectic acoustic sounds. Happy hour starts at 7:00 P.M. and the music begins at 8:00 P.M. Join us most Fridays as we feature cultural events which bring people together.
