  • Archbishop O'brien Named Head of Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Rome
Archbishop O’Brien named head of Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Rome Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien of Baltimore as Pro- Grand Master of the Equestrian Order (Knights) of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, based in Rome. The appointment was announced simultaneously in Rome and in Washington, Aug. 29. “News of this appointment came as a shock to me and I am still adjusting to the reality that effective today I am no longer the Archbishop of Baltimore,” the archbishop said at an Aug. 29 news conference at the Catholic Center in Baltimore to discuss the appointment. “Until learning very recently of my appointment as grand master of the Holy Sepulcher, I was prepared and eager to serve out the remainder of my episcopacy as Archbishop of Baltimore, a title I have been honored to hold and a role in which I have been blessed to serve.” The order is a chivalric organization dedicated to promoting and defending Christianity in the Holy Land, supporting the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and responding to the needs of Catholics in the region. Its origins date back to the First Crusade. He succeeds in the post American Cardinal John P. Foley, who resigned and retired in February as head of the international order for health reasons. Cardinal Foley returned to Philadelphia to live permanently earlier this year after having served in Vatican posts since 1984. Though he ceases to be archbishop of Baltimore effective with the appointment, the pope named him as apostolic administrator of the archdiocese until his successor is named.

Vol. 9 No. 2 • The Monthly Newsletter of St Paul’s Council 15001—Knights of Columbus August 1, 2021 The Assumption of Mary or the title “Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary” is, according to the beliefs of the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Churches, Oriental Orthodoxy, Church of the East and some Lutheran and Anglo-Catholic Churches, among others, the bodily taking up of Mary, the mother of Jesus, into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. The analogous feast in the Eastern Churches is known as the Dormition of the Theotokos or "the Falling Asleep of the Mother of God". One should note that the New Testament contains no explicit narrative about the death or dormition, nor of the Assumption of Mary, but several scriptural passages have been theologically interpreted to describe the ultimate fate in this and the afterworld of the Mother of our Lord Jesus. 1 Vol. 9 No. 2 • The Monthly Newsletter of St Paul’s Council 15001—Knights of Columbus August 1, 2021 Council 15001 Are you a prophet? • Here Can Never Be a Conflict Between Faith and Reason
CATHOLIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION Upholding the Principles of the Cotholic Faith in the Science and Praaice of M edicine The Holy Alliance has been made possible by a grant from Our Sunday Visitor Institute. The Catholic Medical Association is most grateful for their support. The Holy Alliance Project Description The Holy Alliance Project/Program seeks to develop a strong alliance among priests and physician members of the Catholic Medical Association. The unity of faith and reason is under direct assault in our world today. As Catholics, we acknowledge with certainty that the truths of science and the truths of the Faith have one and the same Source. There can never be a conflict between faith and reason. The controversial moral issues of our day all have a medical or bioethical component. Our priests and faithful Catholic physicians must join forces to counter the false claims and seductive arguments that our secularized culture is using to advance the bifurcation of faith and reason. Just as medical professionals need the on-going moral guidance of their spiritual Fathers and shepherds, so also our priests have a need to be updated on the science behind the major moral medical issues of the day. Our priests must confidently speak to their flocks about issues such as the medical dangers of oral contraceptives and the science and success of NaProTechnology in dealing with infertility. The promotion of the misguided Advanced Directive/POLST by our society is one example of an area where our priests need to be well informed. When counseling those who come to them, our priests must be able to respond to those who have been told by a secular doctor that an immoral medical procedure is the “only option” available to them.

  • Providing Shepherds for Soldiers: a History of Catholic Military Chaplaincy in the U.S.” Reverend Mark Francis O’Malley, Hist.Eccl.D
“Providing Shepherds for Soldiers: A History of Catholic Military Chaplaincy in the U.S.” Reverend Mark Francis O’Malley, Hist.Eccl.D. April 21, 2010 Archbishop Peter L. Gerety Lecture Series Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology Seton Hall University “On one occasion, an officer was dying – shot in the face – blood pouring out. He wrote on a slip of paper: ‘Chaplain’, and the slip, red with blood, was carried around by a soldier, seeking for a chaplain. It was handed to me. I hurried: the man was conscious – dying fast. ‘Speak to me’ he said ‘of Jesus’. He had been baptized – there was no time to talk of the Church. I talked of the Savior, and of sorrow for sin. The memory of that scene has never been effaced from my mind. I have not doubted the salvation of that soul.”1 – Fr. John Ireland, Civil War Chaplain The history of Catholic military chaplaincy reaches back to the Roman armies of Constantine, when priests were attached to military troops in order to provide for the spiritual support of soldiers during the journey into battle. From the battles of Christian Rome through the Crusades of the Middle Ages and the post-Reformation wars of fragmented Christendom, till the present, Catholic military chaplaincy has existed in some distinct manner.2 This evening, I would like to present the story of Catholic chaplaincy in the United States by first providing an overview of the institutional development; followed by a review of the activity of the military bishops during the wars of the twentieth century; and finally a sampling of the activity of select chaplains.
