A LETTER FROM TKA’S PRESIDENT

Dear TKA Family,

TKA Cares! As we review the 2017-2018 school year, it’s clear that God’s Kingdom is advancing locally and globally through the ministry of The King’s Academy. TKA Last year, with a fantastic group of King’s faculty and staff, I had the privilege of escorting the Class of 2018 through five countries comprising the British Isles and of Cares joining TKA’s International Studies Program in three cities across China.

One of my favorite memories of the senior trip was an outdoor Sunday morning devotional with our students led by TKA Director of Student Ministries Stephen Kimpel. At the bottom of Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, within walking distance of beautiful yet spiritually-dead Scottish , God’s Word was alive and proclaimed.

In China, I was told that students often choose King’s because it is a Christian school and Chinese families know that Christian teachers are more caring and nurturing. The love of Christ is alive at TKA, and students know us by our love.

Last year, prior to the current political unrest, TKA students served in Nicaragua by building homes, feeding the hungry, donating school uniforms, and loving children. They were the hands and feet of Christ to the poorest of the poor. They were hope in an otherwise hopeless situation.

Currently, plans are underway for next year’s first-ever senior trip to Iceland—a country where naturalism and new age mysticism now exceed the former influence of . The largest Christian church in the country has only 200 members, but as we travel to this beautiful land, King’s Class of 2019 will be a witness for Christ.

For almost 50 years, God has called us to be counter-cultural at TKA—to be His light to the lost. And, that is exactly what we are doing and will continue to do. God’s redemptive plan for a hurting world must be on display at The King’s Academy and wherever we go.

Thank-you for loving God, serving one another, caring for others, and helping 60 acres of good soil at the corner of Belvedere and Sansbury to produce a global harvest. As you read this report, please join me in praising our King, the One who makes this excellence possible!

Sincerely,

Randal L. Martin President

THE KING’S ACADEMY 24 PRESIDENT’S REPORT A STRATEGIC UPDATE: CARING FOR THE KING’S ACADEMY TKA’s newly implemented strategic plan — The Future is Now — is less than THE one year old, but our school has made significant strides in putting the plan into action. Here are some highlights:

FUTURE Instilling Faith: The King’s Academy welcomed Bible teacher and apologetics expert Dan Stuart, improved chapels and witnessed the growth of the IS NOW student-led ONE80 Bible study. Effective training for our teachers featured the Three Circles, How to Lead a Child to Christ, and Classroom Apologetics. King’s celebrated many salvations and rededication decisions by students. TKA introduced the opportunity for students to pursue a special diploma distinction in the field of Christian Ministry.

Influencing Culture: The King’s Academy hosted influential speakers, such as U.S. Senator Marco Rubio and President of the Palm Beach County Bar Association, Rosalyn Sia Baker-Barnes, Esq.; energizing and inspiring our students with their messages.

Impacting Learning: The King’s Academy Explore Program expanded to include more students. Its new innovation lab, developed by a group of sixth graders, promises to benefit the entire elementary school by creating a love for engineering. TKA also experienced improvement in TerraNova and Advanced Placement results. In 2018-2019, students will experience improved transitions from 6th to 7th grades and from TKAP to TKA.A number of our teachers are pursuing advanced degrees, 20 elementary teachers achieved gifted certification, and TKA strengthened its faculty with more outstanding hires.

Inspiring Innovation: From hosting its first National History Day to implementing IT and maintenance ticketing systems, The King’s Academy is continually improving. Some technology improvements included additional laptops in the elementary school. Additionally, the opportunity for students to earn a special distinction on their diploma in the field of computer science was added. Coursework includes computer programming, web design, and AP computer principles.

Initiating Growth: The Boswell Science & Technology Center, completed in 2018, will attract students to King’s who aspire to cure diseases, solve engineering problems, and provide technological solutions thus allowing needed opportunities to discover God-given passions rooted in STEM pursuits. TKA student Genesis Gutierrez ’19 (2 year Hope Project International volunteer): “When we were in Nicaragua, I got to talk with a lady inside of the house that we built. Because I spoke Spanish, I was able to talk to her on a personal level. She explained her situation and said that we had a special place in her heart. She explained to me that she only got a small amount of food each day, and it would be divided amongst her kids and mother who was very sick. Her husband had left her, and before we built the home she lived under a tarp. It made me think about my family in Cuba who are also in a difficult situation. The experience was heart-wrenching but made me realize that we could help. In a way, I think the project benefited us as much as it did them.”

TKA student Connor Marschall ’20 (2 year Hope Project International volunteer): “The part that I enjoyed most was the fact that we were there to help families have a home, and they were also involved in the building process. We were there to help them, but they helped us. I think I gained humility through the trip. We are so blessed. We have food, internet, and homes, but all they had was a trash dump to dig through. In Cristo Rey, we built a home for a family that had previously lived in a plastic garbage house. It was really eye-opening. Because of the trip, I find myself being aware that I am often not thankful enough for what I have.”

THE KING’S ACADEMY 26 PRESIDENT’S REPORT #TKACaresSTORY Hope Project International enabled King’s students to save lives in Cristo Rey (translated “Christ the King”), Nicaragua. For five days, four groups of students built eight 12’ x 12’ homes, complete with concrete-slab foundations, doors and metal rooftops. The structures, which can house up to 45 people, are simple, but keep animals, the elements, and dirt-born bacteria from endangering babies and children—reducing infant mortality rate by 50 percent. Additionally, King’s students donated cribs and beds that kept the children from sleeping on the floor—another simple lifestyle change that would lengthen the lifespan of young children.

Because this was the second year King’s students served in Nicaragua, returning students were able to prepare and guide new students. “It was cool to see students grabbing other students and leading them through the process of serving,” said Stephen Kimpel, TKA Director of Student Ministries, who was among the chaperones.

“During the trip, there was an awakening about meeting needs as a community, an awakening to what God wants to do through us and for us. When you go to places like that and you are open to brokenness, the impact when you return is that you are able to see the brokenness all around us. If you are willing to be exposed to brokenness, God can do really powerful things through you.” TKACares

THE KING’S ACADEMY 32 PRESIDENT’S REPORT #TKACaresSTORY Small gestures matter. Whether moving furniture to help people shop at a Habitat for Humanity’s retail store or laying a wreath on the final resting place of a veteran, The King’s Academy cheerleaders made a big difference through small, yet meaningful actions. Coaches Jenn Allen and Christina Reickel coordinated the volunteer efforts of the Varsity and JV football and basketball cheerleaders.

The cheerleaders volunteered at a Habitat for Humanity retail location. They organized and cleaned the store allowing shoppers to purchase items and helping the store raise support for the nonprofit organization. “It was extremely helpful and humbling for the girls to serve and to learn about the purpose of Habitat for Humanity,” said Coach Reickel.

Coach Jenn Allen continued her tradition of connecting King’s cheerleaders to the sacrifices made by our country’s veterans including her father Paul Dunnell and founder of The King’s Academy M. Nelson Loveland. Each year, Coach Allen involves the cheerleaders in “Wreaths Across America,” a nonprofit organization that ensures wreaths are placed on headstones in Varsity Girls’ Volleyball, led by nine committed seniors, 1,400 national cemeteries.
