Daf Review: Shabbos 24 Compiled by Larry Ziffer ● : One who loves talmidei chachamim will have children who are talmidei chachamim. One who honors talmidei ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ chachamim will have sons-in-law who are talmidei chachamim. One who stands in awe of talmidei chachamim will himself ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ become a scholar. And if he lacks the talent to become a Torah scholar, his statements will be received like the statements of a Torah scholar. ● One may not light with burnt oil of teruma that became tamei on Shabbos. It is called burnt oil because its burning is ​ ​ ​ ​ imminent. One may not light with it on Shabbos because it is a mitzva to burn it, and he might adjust the wick in order to ​ ​ hurry its burning.

o : On a Yom Tov, when adjusting a wick is permitted, it should be okay to light with burnt oil. But Chazal ​ included the prohibition to burn it on Yom Tov due to the prohibition to burn it on Shabbos.

o Chisda: We are not concerned that one might adjust the wick: Our Mishna deals with a Yom Tov that fell on Erev ​ ​ Shabbos; he would have to light Shabbos candles on Yom Tov, and one may not burn teruma on Yom Tov. ​ ​ o R. Chanina: One may not light with burnt oil on Yom Tov that falls on Erev Shabbos because one may not burn consecrated items on a Yom Tov at all. o . Any oil with which you cannot light on Shabbos, you may light with it on a Yom Tov, with the exception of burnt oil, because one may not burn consecrated items on a Yom Tov. ● Do we mention Chanukah in Birchas HaMazon?: (Option 1) Do we not mention it since it is merely a D’rabbanan, or ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ (Option 2) do we mention it due to Pirsumei Nisa? ​ ​ o : We do not mention it, but if we were to mention it, we would mention it in Modim. Rav Huna was at Rava’s ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ home and decided to mention Chanukah in the blessing Boneh Yerushalayim. Rav Sheshes: We mention Chanukah in ​ ​ ​ ​ Birchas HaMazon just as we do in the Shemoneh Esrei.( In both, we should mention Chanukah in the paragraph of ​ ​ ​ Hoda’ah.) ​ ● What about mentioning in Birchas HaMazon? If you say that we don’t need to mention Chanukah since it is ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ only d’Rabbanan, maybe you should mention Rosh Chodesh, since it is d’Oraisa. Alternatively since it is not a day of issur ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ melacha, maybe you don’t need to mention it. Rav: We mention Rosh Chodesh in Birchas HaMazon. R. Chanina: We do ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ not mention it. Rav : We hold like Rav. R. Oshaya (like Rav): When there is a musaf , like on Rosh Chodesh ​ ​ ​ and Chol Hamoed, in the evening, morning, and afternoon Shemoneh Esrai, we mention the service in the Bais Hamikdash. ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ If he did not recite it, he must go back to the beginning and repeat it. There is no kiddush, but we do mention the day in ​ ​ Birchas HaMazon. ​ ● Do we mention Chanukah in musaf on Shabbos or Rosh Chodesh Teves? Rav Huna and Rav Yehuda: we do not mention it. ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ and R. Yochanan: we do mention it. ​ ​ ● Abaye , like Rav: When Rosh Chodesh falls on Shabbos, we do not mention Rosh Chodesh in the brachos after the haftara ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ (because if it were not Shabbos, there would be no haftara). But this does not compare to our question as we do mention ​ ​ ​ ​ Chanukah in Shemoneh Esrai each day. ​ ​ o Rav: When Yom Tov falls on Shabbos, the one who reads the portion of Navi during does not mention Yom ​ ​ ​ ​ Tov in the brachos, since if it were not Shabbos, there would be no reading from the Navi at Mincha on Yom Tov. ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ Then the same could be true with regard to Chanukah and we would not mention Chanukah in musaf. ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ o Conclusion: the halacha is like R. Yehoshua ben Levi, who said that when falls on Shabbos, we should ​ ​ ​ ​ mention Shabbos in ne’ila, even though ne’ila is not said every Shabbos (because on Yom Kippur, we have four tefilos: ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ shacharis, musaf, mincha and ne’ila, which makes it unique). ● Rava: When Yom Tov falls on Shabbos, the chazan need not mention Yom Tov in the abridged “repetition” since if it were not Shabbos, the chazan would not say this after a regular Yom Tov maariv. But this is not really comparable because it was Chazal who instituted this special “repetition” because they wanted those who came late to be able to leave with everyone else. So the “repetition” is not really part of Shabbos. But on Yom Kippur, the day has four tefilos, so any day when there are added tefilos, we need to mention the day in each of them.

● Mishna: we may not light with burnt oil on a Yom Tov. R. Yishmael: we may not light with itran/tar because it smells bad ​ ​ ​ and disturbs those in the house. The Rabanan: any oil can be used as it burns properly (e.g.sesame oil, nut oil, turnip oil, fish oil, gourd oil, tar and neft). R. Tarfon: we may light only with olive oil as it is the choicest and most pleasant of the ​ ​ oils.

● Gemara: How do we know that we may not burn consecrated items on a Yom Tov? Chizkiya: the pasuk says “And you ​ ​ ​ shall not let anything of it remain until morning; but that which remains of it until morning you shall burn with fire.” The Torah restated “until morning to allow a second morning (after Yom Tov) for burning.
