Through writing the lives of female writers and rewriting the literary characters, which have been created by male writers, the women playwrights assume the role of a mythmaker. A mythmaker possesses the power to use the ‘word,’ thereby possesses the power to control ‘reality.’ However, for centuries, women have been debarred from generating their own myths, naming their own experiences, and controlling their own ‘realities.’ Male mythmakers prescribed the roles women were required to perform within the society. Feminist archetypal theorists believe that through a close study of related patterns in women’s writing, common grounds, and experiences, the archetypes shared by women will be disclosed. Unveiling these archetypes will eventually lead to the establishment of new myths around these archetypes. As myths are regarded as the source of collective experiences, analyzing how women have rewritten, revised, devised, and originated myths would thus permit women to reclaim the power to name, and hence to influence the so-called reality established by the patriarchy. Hence, this study analyzes the constantly developing process of women’s mythmaking/mythbreaking in Liz Lochhead’s Blood and Ice , Rose Leiman Goldemberg’s Letters Home , Bilgesu Erenus’ Halide , Timberlake Wertenbaker’s The Love of the Nightingale , Bryony Lavery’s Ophelia , and Zeynep Avcı’s Gilgamesh . iv These playwrights try to depose the stereotypical images attributed to women by male mythmakers. Bu nedenle, bu tezde Liz Lochhead’in Blood and Ice , Rose Leiman Goldemberg’ün Letters Home , Bilgesu Erenus’un Halide , Timberlake Wertenbaker’ın The Love of the Nightingale , Bryony Lavery’nin Ophelia ve Zeynep Avcı’nın Gılgamı ş adlı oyunlarındaki mit yaratma ve mit kırma süreçleri incelenmi ştir. Bu oyun yazarları, erkek mit yaratıcılarının olu şturdu ğu kadın şablonlarını yıkmayı ve kadınlı ğı tekrar tanımlamayı amaçlamı şlardır. vi Anahtar Kelimeler : Yeniden yazma, Arketipler, Mit Yaratma, Mit Kırma, Feminist Arketip Kuramı vii To My Family viii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I should like to express my sincerest gratitude and thanks to my supervisor Prof. Dr. Meral Çileli and my co-supervisor Prof. Dr. Nursel İçöz for guiding and assisting me at all stages of this work. The Madwoman in the Attic Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar William McNeill declares that those truths shared by a social group, which “provide a sanction for common effort, have obvious survival value” (7). Whether or not the truth shared by the group possesses any validity, this truth supplies a certain refuge for the endurance of that group of people. McNeill continues by stating that, “without such social cement no group can long preserve itself” (7). For McNeill, sharing the consciousness of a common past “is a powerful supplement to other ways of defining who ‘we’ are” (7). Therefore, certain shared values help to ensure the future, as well as the identity, of societies. Some women playwrights have made use of women writers and literary women characters in their texts to question the previously established myths around these figures in order to reclaim their rightful place in the society, and to ensure their future. In order to discover some of the persistent patterns in plays of contemporary women, the following plays will be analyzed in detail: Blood and Ice by Liz Lochhead, Letters Home by Rose Leiman Goldemberg, Halide by Bilgesu Erenus, The Love of the Nightingale by Timberlake Wertenbaker, Ophelia by Bryony Lavery, and Gilgamesh by Zeynep Avcı. This dissertation will try to reveal the conscious, as well as the unconscious mythical patterns woven by these six women playwrights in creating, revising, and even deconstructing myths (mythbreaking) as a reference point for understanding their own experiences, acknowledging their own identities, and finally declaring their own freedom as women. 1 The consciousness of a similar heritage is the major trait of any society. Having a similar ancestral past, inhabiting the same lands, enjoying common traditions, and speaking

  • The Grave Goods of Roman Hierapolis
THE GRAVE GOODS OF ROMAN HIERAPOLIS AN ANALYSIS OF THE FINDS FROM FOUR MULTIPLE BURIAL TOMBS Hallvard Indgjerd Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History University of Oslo This thesis is submitted for the degree of Master of Arts June 2014 The Grave Goods of Roman Hierapolis ABSTRACT The Hellenistic and Roman city of Hierapolis in Phrygia, South-Western Asia Minor, boasts one of the largest necropoleis known from the Roman world. While the grave monuments have seen long-lasting interest, few funerary contexts have been subject to excavation and publication. The present study analyses the artefact finds from four tombs, investigating the context of grave gifts and funerary practices with focus on the Roman imperial period. It considers to what extent the finds influence and reflect varying identities of Hierapolitan individuals over time. Combined, the tombs use cover more than 1500 years, paralleling the life-span of the city itself. Although the material is far too small to give a conclusive view of funerary assem- blages in Hierapolis, the attempted close study and contextual integration of the objects does yield some results with implications for further studies of funerary contexts on the site and in the wider region. The use of standard grave goods items, such as unguentaria, lamps and coins, is found to peak in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Clay unguentaria were used alongside glass ones more than a century longer than what is usually seen outside of Asia Minor, and this period saw the development of new forms, partially resembling Hellenistic types. Some burials did not include any grave gifts, and none were extraordinarily rich, pointing towards a standardised, minimalistic set of funerary objects.

For more information, please contact us at [email protected] or visit our website at www.contemporarysee.org National Promotion and Eurovision: from Besieged Sarajevo to the Floodlights of Europe Neven Andjelić* The Eurovision Song Contest, as an important part of the entertainment industry, has offered European countries a platform for national promotion. The original format has developed over 60 years and has come under scrutiny and criticism as allegations of block voting, politics and nationalism have been raised. It has also been argued that similarity of cultures, linguistic connections, and close national identities, rather than national interests and politics, are what actually bring countries together in this competition. This study has two focuses in an attempt to determine what role the contest has had for participating countries and how they have used it. The first focus is on analysing historical incidents at the competition when countries have attempted to politicise the contest. The second focus and the main part of the study is a thorough investigation into the organisation of the first Bosnian-Herzegovinian delegation to participate in Eurovision, their escape from besieged Sarajevo and their participation at the contest in Ireland in 1993.

  • For the Homeland: Transnational Diasporic Nationalism and the Eurovision Song Contest
FOR THE HOMELAND: TRANSNATIONAL DIASPORIC NATIONALISM AND THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST SLAVIŠA MIJATOVIĆ A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN GEOGRAPHY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, CANADA December 2014 © Slaviša Mijatović, 2014 Abstract This project examines the extent to which the Eurovision Song Contest can effectively perpetuate discourses of national identity and belonging for diasporic communities. This is done through a detailed performance analysis of former Yugoslav countries’ participations in the contest, along with in-depth interviews with diasporic people from the former Yugoslavia in Malmö, Sweden. The analysis of national symbolism in the performances shows how national representations can be useful for the promotion of the state in a reputational sense, while engaging a short-term sense of national pride and nationalism for the audiences. More importantly, the interviews with the former Yugoslav diaspora affirm Eurovision’s capacity for the long-term promotion of the ‘idea of Europe’ and European diversities as an asset, in spite of the history of conflict within the Yugoslav communities. This makes the contest especially relevant in a time of rising right-wing ideologies based on nationalism, xenophobia and racism. Key words: diaspora, former Yugoslavia, Eurovision Song Contest, music, nationalism, Sweden, transnationalism ii Acknowledgements Any project is fundamentally a piece of team work and my project has been no different. I would like to thank a number of people and organisations for their faith in me and the support they have given me: William Jenkins, my supervisor. For his guidance and support over the past two years, and pushing me to follow my desired research and never settling for less.

  • Linguistic and Cultural Changes Throughout the History of the Eurovision Song Contest
Linguistic and cultural changes throughout the history of the Eurovision Song Contest Trabajo de Fin de Grado Lenguas Modernas y Traducción Facultad de Filosofía y Letras Written by: Sergio Lucas Rojo Tutored by: Irina Ursachi July 2020 Abstract This paper aims to clarify some of the linguistic problems that have arisen in recent years at the Eurovision Song Contest, one of the most important music events in the world. Through an exhaustive bibliographic review and the individual analysis of a large number of entries, it is concluded that linguistic diversity, an identifying feature of the show in the past, has been reduced by establishing a rule that does not oblige artists to sing in the language of the country they represent. English has taken over the reins of this annual competition, although there is still room for the traditional and the ethnic. The research that has been carried out is intended to serve as a reference for all Eurovision followers who wish to expand their knowledge. It also attempts to clarify concepts such as “linguistic diversity”, “identity” and “culture”, which can be extrapolated to other fields of knowledge. It must be noted that not only have linguistic issues been dealt with, but there are references to all the factors involved in the contest. However, it is those phenomena related to languages that form the backbone of the work. Key words: Eurovision Song Contest, languages, culture, identity, Europe, music. Resumen Este trabajo responde a la necesidad de aclarar algunos problemas lingüísticos que han surgido en los últimos años en el Festival de Eurovisión, uno de los eventos musicales más importantes del mundo.
