The habitat grouping also showed signifi cant differences in 13C values, with the Schöningen samples resembling individuals from mosaic environments most frequently, with some individuals from strictly closed and some from open systems. Based on their δ13C and δ15N values, the herbivores appear to be consuming food from consistently different niches. The carnivores and omnivores results correspond with their known habitat and diet. The interpretation of the climate change parameter is not clear. It could demonstrate a trend towards increased openness, but this depends on how the data is grouped. Overall the results of our statistical investigation demonstrate consistencies between the stable isotope values of Schöningen and other ecosystems. In order to meet customers’ requirements, a wide variety of retanning agents are used in retanning process viz. vegetable tan and phenolic synthetic/organic tanning materials. Sunt bark, widely distributed in Sudan, has been evaluated for its utilization in the retanning of the leathers. In the present investigation, sunt bark powder has been used for the retanning of wet blue leathers. The effectiveness sunt bark in retanning of wet blue leathers has been compared with wattle retanning. The organoleptic properties of the leathers viz. softness, fullness, grain smoothness, grain tightness (break), general appearance, uniformity of dyeing of sunt bark retanned leather have been evaluated in comparison with wattle retanned leathers. Sunt retanning resulted in leathers with good grain tightness.

    Wattle and Daub ”The greatest part of our building in the cities and good towns of England consisteth only of timber, for as yet few of the houses of the communalty (except here and there in the west country towns) are made of stone….’these english’, quoth he [a Spaniard of Queen Mary’s day] , 'have their houses made of sticks and dirt, but they fare commonly so well as the king”. William Harrison, Description of England, 1587 Wattle and daub is the term for the panels of woven wood and mud used to fill between the timbers of many of the Museum’s buildings. This combination of materials has been used since at least the Bronze Age; fragmentary remains of daub-like mixtures bearing wattle imprints often survive in the archaeological record having been ‘fired’ as a building burnt down and waterlogged remains of wattle panels occasionally survive also. Brick nogging might also have been used to fill in between the timbers but this was also sometimes used to replace earlier wattle and daub. Evidence for the previous existence for wattle and daub panels may come from marks left on the main timbers by daub, and from auger holes drilled into the upper timber of the panel and grooves cut into the lower where the uprights for the wattle were fitted in. Timber framing with wattle and daub panels was the dominant form of building construction in many parts of England and Wales from the mid 12th century. It was common in some areas until the late 18th century and was used into the 19th century for lower status housing.

What you’ll need • Wattle and daub kits (can be loaned from City of Trees) • Air dry clay Subjects • Hay • Water History, Science, • Mixing bowl Art & design Learning Objectives: • Ability to address and devise historically relevant questions • Understanding of Stone/Bronze/Iron Age life • Ability to note connections and trends between Stone/Bronze/Iron Age technologies Lesson Plan: Warm up/Introduction Role-playing: Find the right materials to build a house. The children must first find a strong oak tree for the long posts of their house, then willow, hazel, or birch for the structure of the walls and then mud to complete their walls. A full script for this role-playing activity is in Appendix A. Main Learning 1. Split children into groups of 4 or 5 2. Half of the groups will make the ‘wattle’ and the other half the ‘daub.’ 3. Step by step instructions for each of these two components are in Appendix B 4. Once all the groups have finished making their wattle or daub, each daub groups will pair up with a wattle group to complete the build together as show in Appendix B.     Building timber auxiliary forts in the Lower Rhine Delta in the Netherlands (AD 40 –140) Julia P. Chorus Zusammenfassung – Nach detaillierten Analysen der Ausgrabungen von neun hölzernen römischen Kastellen am Rhein Delta (Nieder- germanischen Limes) in Vechten, Utrecht, De Meern, Woerden, Bodegraven, Zwammerdam, Alphen aan den Rijn, Leiden-Roomburg und Valkenburg (Süd-Holland) sowie von einem Kleinkastell in Valkenburg-Marktveld können nahezu 40 Bauphasen unterschieden werden. Sie sind die Grundlage für den hier präsentierten Vergleich. Die frühkaiserzeitlichen Kastelle wurden alle aus Holz gebaut. Die später häufig anzutreffende kombinierte Holz- und Steinbauweise ist erst ab etwa 160 n. Chr. feststellbar. Frühe Kastelle wurden aus Bauhölzern errichtet, die den umliegenden Wäldern entstammen. Dagegen ist von etwa 70 n. Chr. an das meiste Holz aus Nutzwäldern entnommen, dadurch wurden im Laufe der Zeit andere Baumarten bevorzugt genutzt. Es gibt viele Unterschiede zwischen diesen Kastellen in den West-Niederlanden und denen im weiteren Verlauf der Rheingrenze. Layout, Baustil und Bautechniken zeigen markante Variationen. Dies könnte eine Beziehung zwischen den Soldaten, die die Kastelle bauten, ihrer Herkunft und ihren Bautraditionen aufzeigen, die sich aus der Kenntnis eisenzeitlicher Bautechniken in Holz erschließen läßt. Einige Kastelle wurden in einer Tradition gebaut die man von den Elbgermanen, der Przeworsk Kultur und möglicherweise auch von den Batavern kennt. Andere Kastelle zeigen wiederum Ähnlichkeiten zum murus gallicus aus Gallien. Verwers Review data: Submission // Revision // nd submission // available online at www.jalc.nl and www.jalc.be Abstract From the sixth century onwards, the northernmost branch of the Rhine in the Netherlands regained the transport-geographical importance that it had partially lost during the Migration Period. The high point of this development was the rise of Dorestad at the fork of the Rhine and the Lek in the mid-seventh century. This article examines a number of Early Medieval settlements situated along the Rhine, some of which were the immediate precursors of Dorestad. They are settlements of differing character and ancestry. Some go back to the days when the Rhine formed the frontier of the Roman Empire. Others emerged in Merovingian times, when the Franks and the Frisians came to oppose each other in the Rhine delta. The frontier character of this zone persisted into the eighth century. In these days, all settlements along the Rhine were part of a vast, international exchange network, with Dorestad evolving into one of the principal ports of the Carolingian realm. For this period, pottery is an important source of archae- ological evidence.
