Edward Wagenknecht : Edgar Allan Poe: The Man Behind the Legend before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Edgar Allan Poe: The Man Behind the Legend:

Poe himself, however, is often still misunderstood because, immediately after his death, his character was deliberately assassinated, totally and thoroughly maligned by his "official" biographer; those lies were subsequently repeated (year after year, book after book) by others unaware of their fallaciousness until the real Poe was almost lost to us. In this book (originally published in 1963), noted literary critic and biographer Edward Wagenknecht attempts to correct those errors to give us a more truthful version of Poe's life. Since any accurate, truth- seeking book about Poe deserves to be read, you will undoubtedly want to consider this one (especially given the prestige of its author). There are two major problems with this book. The first is EW's somewhat affected style of writing. He presents his information in a formal and at times confusing manner that often leaves us pondering what it is we've just finished reading. The second problem is that the first-hand sources from which he heavily quotes may also seem contradictory, reinforcing the false images of Poe as much as they are (apparently) meant to dispel them. His objective, analytical, pro-and-con manner of presentation is, therefore, often unintentionally confusing and unclear, especially in those enigmatic areas of Poe's life that most demand clarification and would have particularly benefited from an expert's interpretive (even if subjective) insights.Virtually all current, major Poe biographies by respected authors from major publishers (as opposed to brief, fly-by-night, self-published, ebook editions lacking editorial oversight) are equally and fully aware of the early exaggerations and lies about Poe and strive no less than Wagenknecht to put them to rest, but the newest among them have the benefit of over 50 years worth of additional research. Moreover, their presentation is likely to be clearer, more precise, more direct, and perhaps even better organized (overall) than this one. Therefore, EW's biography of Edgar Allan Poe, though certainly well-worth reading, would not necessarily be my first choice IF a newer but solid, full-length treatment by a major publisher were available to me. In lieu of such a one, however, this will certainly suffice.NOTE: I first read this many years ago; over time my hardcovered copy somehow grew legs and managed to walk off my shelves, so when this ebook edition was offered as a "Kindle Countdown Deal" for only $.99, I purchased it to revisit an old friend.1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not sure how to rate thisBy Cejay MelIt is a slow somewhat laborious read. Author wrote a scholarly work to separate fact from myth re the life and writings of Poe. But he seems more focused on sounding scholarly than being readable or even, in places, comprehensible. He cites and compares an incredible number of sources but chonology is often unclear and the reader needs to already have a solid background re Poe's writings and his contempories to grasp the references. Despite the fact that I have read most of Poe's work and enjoy biographies and history, I gave up on this one.

More than a century and a half after his death Edgar Allan Poe still remains a controversial figure, the one American literary giant of the nineteenth century about whom not only the estimate of his work, but also the very facts of his life remain in dispute.Poe has been seen variously as demon or saint, a literary dilettante or the great precursor of twentieth-century literature. Poe was all these and more, and it is the greatest virtue of Edward Wagenknechtrsquo;s study that he presents Poe in a new light: in all his complexity, but with his strengths and weaknesses judiciously balanced. As in his earlier studies of and , Wagenknecht looks at primary sources ndash; the writerrsquo;s own literary work and his writings, the accounts of people who knew him ndash; and secondary material written after his death. It is notable that Wagenknecht dismisses many of the slanders which have clung to Poersquo;s image, and he corrects wrong impressions which have been drawn from the facts of Poersquo;s life. Poersquo;s character emerges in a more sympathetic light, and the relation between his life and his work becomes clearer and more significant. As a literary critic Professor Wagenknecht probes into the nature of Poersquo;s career as poet, fiction writer, and essayist, but he interests himself much more in how Poersquo;s writing reflected his personality and nature. He also pays close attention to Poersquo;s religious and philosophical writings and draws significant conclusions as to their place in his literary output and its relation to his life. 'Highly recommended' Boston GlobeEdward Wagenknecht (1900-2004) was a prolific writer of books about literary and other celebrated figures of British and American culture. His subjects included , , Edgar Allan Poe, , and .
