    REPORT ON DEMOCRACY 100 YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE TOWARDS A CHARTER FOR AUSTRALIAN DEMOCRACY? 1 2 On 16 August 2017, the Museum of Australian Democracy invited over 100 leaders from the worlds of academia, arts and culture, business, the community sector, the legal community, politics and political journalism, and the public service to make a difference and become champions of democracy. The program had the objective of celebrating our democratic achievements as a nation, establishing the case for democratic renewal and creating powerful, and immediate content for an upcoming exhibition. The University of Canberra’s Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis, surveyed participants on what they considered to be Australia’s most important democratic values and what the responsibilities of a champion of democracy might be. This fed into a deliberative forum based around a card game developed by the leading design agency Think Place. The resulting Charter for Australian Democracy is drawn from the outcomes of this event. 3 A CHARTER FOR AUSTRALIAN DEMOCRACY We have been encouraged to believe that Australia is a great, young democracy: that our citizens are free; that our Parliament is one of the great custodians of democratic values; that our liberty is the envy of our region; that our system of justice is robust and fair; that the guardians of our security – the police and defence service – are subject to democratic, legal control; that our public service is an impartial steward of public reason; that our cities and indigenous communities maintain a proud identity; and, that our media is brave and honest.

    Virginia Haussegger AM Biography Virginia Haussegger AM is an award winning journalist and media commentator. With more than 25 years in news broadcasting, her work has taken her around the globe reporting for Australia’s leading current affairs programs on Channel 9, the 7 Network and the ABC. Virginia currently presents ABC TV News in Canberra and regularly hosts panel discussions for a variety of broadcasts, in addition to facilitating a range of seminar and conference events at the Australian National University and University of Canberra. Virginia is widely published across Australian print media and has been a weekly columnist for The Canberra Times, and contributor to The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. Her book, Wonder Women: the myth of ‘having it all’, (A&U) was launched in a live broadcast at the National Press Club. Her essay ‘Prospects for Women: Gender and Social Justice’ is published in "The Afghanistan Conflict and Australia's Role" (MUP Ed Prof A.     COMPOSING BIOGRAPHIES OF FOUR AUSTRALIAN WOMEN: FEMINISM, MOTHERHOOD AND MUSIC Jillian Graham (BMus, MMus) Thesis submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February 2009 Faculty of Music The University of Melbourne This thesis is dedicated with love to my children and to my mother Olivier and Freya Miller Pamela Graham ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines the impact of gender, feminism and motherhood on the careers of four Australian composers: Margaret Sutherland (1897–1984), Ann Carr-Boyd (b. 1938), Elena Kats-Chernin (b. 1957) and Katy Abbott (b. 1971). Aspects of the biographies of each of these women are explored, and I situate their narratives within the cultural and musical contexts of their eras, in order to achieve heightened understanding of the ideologies and external influences that have contributed to their choices and experiences. Methodologies derived from feminist biography and oral history/ethnography underpin this study. Theorists who inform this work include Marcia Citron, Daphne de Marneffe, Sherna Gluck, Carolyn Heilbrun, Anne Manne, Ann Oakley, Alessandro Portelli, Adrienne Rich and Robert Stake, along with many others. The demands traditionally placed on women through motherhood and domesticity have led to a lack of time and creative space being available to develop their careers. Thus they have faced significant challenges in gaining public recognition as serious composers. There is a need for biographical analysis of these women’s lives, in order to consider their experiences and the encumbrances they have faced through attempting to combine their creative and mothering roles. Previous scholarship has concentrated more on their compositions than on the women who created them, and the impact of private lives on public lives has not been considered worthy of consideration.
