Fred Nile was born in Kings Cross, Sydney, in 1934. Fred's father, of Devon, UK, migrated to Australia after serving in the trenches of France during World War I. He worked as a taxi driver in Kings Cross. Fred's mother, Marjorie, migrated to Australia from New Zealand and was of Scottish heritage. She worked as a waitress in Kings Cross. Both of Fred's parents are now deceased, and are buried in Christchurch, New Zealand. Fred has one brother (deceased), Jim who lived in Sydney, and two sisters, Marjory and Mary, who live in Christchurch, New Zealand. Fred married Elaine in 1958. Together, they had four children: o Stephen: Retired NSW Senior Police Constable, Driving school instructor. o Sharon: Social Worker. o Mark: State School Teacher, Previously secondary (17 years) now primary o David: Retired NSW Senior Police Constable (injured on duty). Council Ranger Sadly, Elaine passed away on the 17th October, 2011 from Cancer of the liver after 3 years of Chemotherapy and operations. Fred was remarried in December 2013 to Silvana Nero. BRIEF OVERVIEW – POLITICAL CAREER o 1981 elected as Call to Australia Member to the NSW Legislative Council for 11 year term. o 1991 re-elected for an 8 year term. o 1999 re-elected as Christian Democratic Party Member for an 8 year term. -

Genders at Work: Exploring the role of workplace equality in preventing men’s violence against women Scott Holmes and Michael Flood Genders at Work: Exploring the role of workplace equality in preventing men’s violence against women 1 White Ribbon is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end men’s violence against women and girls, promote gender equity, healthy relationships and a new vision of masculinity. White Ribbon Australia, as part of this global movement, aims to create an Australian society in which all women can live in safety, free from violence and abuse. We are Australia’s only national, male-led violence prevention organisation. We work to examine the root causes of gender-based violence, challenge behaviours and create a cultural shift that leads us to a future without men’s violence against women. Through education, awareness-raising, preventative programs, partnerships and creative campaigns, we are highlighting the positive role men play in preventing men’s violence against women and inspiring them to be part of this social change. For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Gay men and lesbians in the university community Abstract [Extract] There is little doubt that there are gay and lesbian students, faculty, staff, and administrators in our universities. You may not see all of us unless we want you to, but we are there. Whether you choose to acknowledge our presence is another issue. Historical prejudices against minority groups and those who are 'different' still exist in many parts of the world and in many of our universities. There are significant cultural, religious, national and regional differences in how minority 'tribes' or 'groups' are identified and treated. There is a significant body of esearr ch discussing issues of homosexuality and discrimination against homosexuals. A simple search of the World Wide Web (WWW) will lead any interested person to thousands of pages and sites that discuss the discrimination. The research discusses many different aspects of same sex attraction and same sex practices. However, many of those who are in charge of our tertiary institutions systematically ignore this body of research. -

An Examination of the Parliamentary Disqualification Provisions of the Commonwealth Constitution* John Kalokerinos THE PLACE OF SECTION 44 IN CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENTARY DEMOCRACY The right to choose political representatives is a fundamental right of the citizens of a democratic polity. Section 441 of the Commonwealth Constitution sets out the disqualification provisions for persons seeking to sit in the Senate or the House of Representatives in order to ensure that Australia’s parliamentarians have an undivided loyalty to Australia and to the Parliament. Using the 1890s Convention Debates, decisions of the Court of Disputed Returns, government reports, and academic commentary, this paper explores the purposes and justification for s 44, and its operation in the contemporary Australian context, to argue that reform is necessary. The paper reviews the latest developments in this dynamic area of the law, examining the most recent litigation, including the Hill2 decision. Particular consideration is given to Sykes v Cleary,3 where the High Court held that three of the candidates for election to the seat of Wills were ineligible, raising the question whether this rate of disqualification is extraordinary or simply demonstrative of the pressing need for reform of s 44. * This is an edited version of an Honours Thesis submitted for the Research Unit, Faculty of Law, the Australian National University, June 2000. 1 The full text of ss 44 and 45 is set out in the Appendix below. 2 Sue v Hill (1999) 163 ALR 648. 3 Sykes v Cleary (1992) 176 CLR 77. “A COMPLEX AND DELICATE WEB”: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SELECTED SPECULATIVE NOVELS BY MARGARET ATWOOD, URSULA K. LE GUIN, DORIS LESSING AND MARGE PIERCY Thesis Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Rhodes University By Jayne Ashleigh Glover December 2007 Abstract This thesis examines selected speculative novels by Margaret Atwood, Ursula K. Le Guin, Doris Lessing and Marge Piercy. It argues that a specifiable ecological ethic can be traced in their work – an ethic which is explored by them through the tensions between utopian and dystopian discourses. The first part of the thesis begins by theorising the concept of an ecological ethic of respect for the Other through current ecological philosophies, such as those developed by Val Plumwood. Thereafter, it contextualises the novels within the broader field of science fiction, and speculative fiction in particular, arguing that the shift from a critical utopian to a critical dystopian style evinces their changing treatment of this ecological ethic within their work. The remainder of the thesis is divided into two parts, each providing close readings of chosen novels in the light of this argument. Part Two provides a reading of Le Guin’s early Hainish novels, The Left Hand of Darkness , The Word for World is Forest and The Dispossessed , followed by an examination of Piercy’s Woman on the Edge of Time , Lessing’s The Marriages Between Zones Three, Four and Five , and Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale . The third, and final, part of the thesis consists of individual chapters analysing the later speculative novels of each author. -

Women in Australian politics: Mothers only need apply ABSTRACT When Julia Gillard considered running for the leadership of the Austral- ian Labor Party in early 2005, her political enemies immediately raised three reasons for opposing her: she is female, single and without children. These criticisms prompted a flurry of discussion in the media about the relevance of a person’s family situation to their ability to work effectively in politics. This article examines the treatment of female politicians by the press over the more than 80 years since the first woman appeared in any Australian parliament. It finds that there continues to be pressure on women to continue in the traditional roles of wife and mother, while more recently, female politicians have had to contend with an extra layer of coverage concentrating on their sexual attributes. One of those considering running to replace outgoing Ileader Mark Latham was Julia Gillard, a frontbencher who had proved her mettle in the shadow portfolios of immigration, indigenous affairs and health. But there were perceived problems. Gillard is female, single and child free, and her political enemies wasted no time in using these attributes as weapons against her. The Sex Discrimination Act and its Rocky Rite of Passage Margaret.Thornton.and.Trish.Luker Through an analysis of the parliamentary debates on the Sex Discrimination Bill 1983–84, this chapter underscores the anxiety that preoccupied the opponents of the Bill. Their fear that the Bill would give rise to a totalitarian regime, reminiscent of an Eastern bloc country, is clearly apparent from their own words. Not only would the passage of the Bill signal a blow to democracy, it would result in the creation of a unisex society and, most significantly, the demise of the nuclear family. Introduction Will the Prime Minister give an assurance to Australian women that neither the Government’s proposed sex discrimination Bill nor ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women will in any way discriminate against women who choose life within the family, will not force them to go out to work, separate them from their children or break up their families, as some people have recently been suggesting?1 The passage of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) (SDA) represents a high political moment in the history of gender relations in Australia. The seemingly protracted debates of 1983–842 were marked by a deep anxiety about sex roles, the patriarchal family and the wellbeing of children. The hysterical propaganda campaign and the fear engendered by the Bill were out of all proportion to its modest liberal intent that women be ‘let in’ to certain domains of public and quasi-public life, including employment, on the same terms as men. -

Her Place : Know the past: shape the future Prof. Gillian Triggs 21 March @ CT Congratulations to all those with the vision to establish Her Place as both a record of women’s accomplishments and a place to think about the contributions we can continue to make in the future. First, the past. We all stand on the shoulders of others. It is important that we recognize and honour the many women who have paved the way for careers like mine. They include those who have publicly challenged the submissive role history has assigned to women: trailblazing jurist Elizabeth Evatt; writers and activists Germaine Greer and Anne Summers; politicians Susan Ryan and Julia Gillard; trade unionist and now politician Ged Kearney; First Nations peoples’ advocate Pat Anderson; former sex discrimination commissioner Elizabeth Broderick. Among these intelligent, feisty women, one who inspires me especially is Jessie Street, a remarkable and surprisingly modern woman I have admired since I first learned of her work as a law student at the University of Melbourne. Born in India under the reign of Queen Victoria, Street studied at the University of Sydney and become a pioneer activist for equal rights. She joined the Labour Party in 1939 but failed to gain political office despite several attempts; she lost an election in Wentworth on preferences—perhaps if she were alive today, she too would have given the former member, Mr Turnbull, a run for his money. Despite these setbacks, Street had tenacity and a clarity of vision for an Australia she wanted to see thrive on principles of equality and justice. -
