If Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia at its most frenetically developed, and Borneo the nation at its wildest and ruggedest, this is the country’s, well, country: not paved, not jungled over, but cultivated, cared for and landscaped into a horizon of looping emerald ridges. Limestone pillars thrust up through this paddyscape and peasants dot it, the latter contributing to the harvest of over half of Malaysia’s domestic rice supply. Not that many foreigners see all this. While it may be one of the most touristed states in Malaysia, most travellers would draw a blank if you asked them anything about ‘Kedah.’ That’s because almost everyone knows it by its biggest island and Malaysia’s number one holiday destination: Pulau Langkawi. One of those postcard places where life is a cruise ship commercial starring you, Langkawi is also a living island where there’s a fair bit to explore beyond the beach, although no one will fault you for losing a few days (Weeks? Months? Langkawi has that effect…) on the sand. Langkawi’s duty-free status also makes it popular with a certain kind of shopper, and it’s not uncommon to see folks leaving the island with tanned arms busting with cartons of Marlboros. Perlis is the smallest state in Malaysia; physically and culturally it borders Kedah. It’s also proximate to Thailand, and most travellers rush through here on their way to that kingdom.

Slide 2 In the late morning of December 26th, 2004 there was a Tsunami attacked at the 6 provinces in the southern part of Thailand along the Andaman coast, that were: Phuket, Krabi, Trang, Ranong, Phang-nga and Satun. Slide 3 Five thousand, three hundred and nine people (5,309) were death, Eight thousand, four hundred and fifty seven people (8,457) were injured, Three thousand, eight hundred and ten people (3,810) were reported unidentified/missing. Slide 4 Three thousand six hundred and eighty nine houses (3,689) were totally and partially damaged. 27 resorts and hotels were completely destroyed. Slide 5 More than hundred thousands (100,000+) people lost their houses, their property and their family members. Some lost their spouse, some lost their parents and many children became the orphans. They were shock, panic, grief, lost of hope and need immediate mental health care. How did we help them? 2 Slide 6 Before I tell you about what we did during the Disaster period, I would like to inform you about the Health Care System in Thailand first. So you will understand more clearly. In Thailand, we have ninety-three (93) Provincial Hospitals (around two hundred to a thousand beds), seven hundred and sixteen (716) Community Hospitals (around ten to one hundred and twenty beds) at district level and more than four thousands (4,000+) Health Centers at sub district level.

Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand 1 1. Overview Nakhon Si Thammarat City is the capital of the Nakhon Si Thammarat Province in Southern Thailand. It is a regional hub for commercial activity, tourism, education and culture. The wider province is largely rural with urban development concentrated in the Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat District, a lowland region located on the province’s eastern coast. Nakhon Si Thammarat Province is home to 1.5 million people, 102,152 who live in the Nakhon Si Thammarat City Municipality, and has a total economic production estimated at $5.4 billion, growing at around 2.2% per year. The regional economy is driven by a thriving tourism industry and received over 4 million visitors over last year. The city also has significant religious and historical importance, first founded over 1,500 years ago. Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Hall has overall responsibility for city governance and administration, while district, sub-district and village level policy implementation is delivered through a series of local organisations. Developing effective waste management systems is a key priority for Nakhon Si Thammarat. The province currently has the largest accumulation of unmanaged solid waste in Thailand with the city regularly receiving waste from surrounding settlements. Its close proximity to the coast and hydrological connection via a large urban canal network mean tackling the city’s plastic waste has major regional impact potential. Current development priorities for Nakhon Si Thammarat include developing public awareness and environmental education around waste management, tackling urban flooding, and improving city infrastructure. Complex Lada: a Remarkable Achievement
21 OCT 1996 Complex-Opening COMPLEX LADA: A REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT LANGKAWI, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- The new Langkawi Development Authority Complex (Lada), to be opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Wednesday, can be considered a remarkable achievement for Lada in its short life of only six years. Lada, which is under the Finance Ministry, had within this short space of time shown extraordinary performance for a government agency. The 10-storey complex had solved the problem of shortage of office space on this duty-free island. Built at a cost of RM30 million, the complex situated about one kilometre from Kuah Jetty and Kuah town would house all government departments, both state and Federal under one roof. This would facilitate dealings with the public because before this state and Federal government departments were scattered all over Kuah town and some were even operating in housing estates. Apart from office space, the complex also has an auditorium, which can seat 300 people and kiosks to sell foodstuffs and dry items. The grand colourful opening ceremony would begin at 8pm, Lada Public Relations Officer Mohd Hatta Said said. Simultaneously, Dr Mahathir would also open the Lang Square and the Langkawi Legend in the Park located some 500 metres from the Lada Complex. These two latest attractions in Langkawi were also built by Lada, with the square costing RM14 million and the legend project costing RM30 million. Like its name, the main attraction at Lang Square is a giant replica of an eagle meauring about 12 metres in height while visitors to the Langkawi Legend in the Park could know about the history of the island through giant carvings on its past.

In the 7 century, from Ao : Bay found evidence, the city merged with the Ban : Village Kingdom of Srivijaya. The ancient city was Chedi : Stupa or Pagoda divided into 3 towns: Viangsa, Khiri Rat Nikom Hat : Beach and Tha Thong. Then in the reign of King Khao : Mountain Rama IV, the town of Tha Thong was moved by Khlong : Canal Royal command to Ban Don and upgraded to Ko : Island a fourth-level town subject to Bangkok, and Laem : Cape was royally renamed “Kanchanadit.” When Mueang : Town or City a province was established as a form of Namtok : Waterfall administration in the reign of King Rama V, Tambon : Sub-district the three towns were combined as one called Wat : Temple Chaiya.
