Email: [email protected] Abstract Part of the genus Lioconcha Mörch, 1853 is reviewed. Species strongly resembling Lioconcha castrensis (Linnaeus, 1758) are discussed and two new species are described: Lioconcha arabaya n. sp. from the Northwest Indian Ocean and Lioconcha rumphii n. sp. from Thailand and Sumatra. These three species, together with Lioconcha macaulayi Lamprell & Healy, 2002, share many morphological similarities and we suspect them to be closely related. They are referred to as the Lioconcha cast- rensis species group. Furthermore, lectotypes of Venus castrensis Linnaeus, 1758, and Venus fulminea Röding, 1798, are desig- nated. The latter is considered a junior synonym of V. castrensis. The presence of a developed byssus was also detected in some specimens of V. antiquata. A classification scale of this malformation, established depending on the degree of this anomaly, showed six initial types that evolve to form two or three feet, at the posterior and/or anterior sides of the animal. In order to determine the causes of this malformation, experiments of transplantation were carried out. Specimens of V. verrucosa collected from Zarzouna station were transplanted in Chaâra station which is characterized by low rate of malformations, low hydrodynamics and different sediment type and vice versa. Results revealed that foot malformations degree is highly correlated with both hydrodynamics and substrate type. -

MOLLUSCA, Cl.Bivalvia, sCl.Heterodonta, O.Veneroida, F.Veneridae Introduction Mollusca The phylum Mollusca is the second largest in the animal kingdom and comprises several classes consisting of the Monoplacophora, Polyplacophora, Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Scaphopoda, Aplacophora, and Cephalopoda. The typical mollusc has a shell, muscular foot, head with mouth and sense organs, and a visceral mass containing most of the gut and the heart, gonads, and kidney. Part of the body is enclosed in a mantle formed of a fold of the body wall. The mantle encloses a space known as the mantle cavity which is filled with water or air and in which the respiratory organs, anus, nephridiopore(s) and gonopore(s) are located. The coelom is reduced to small spaces including the pericardial cavity and gonocoel. The well-developed blood vascular system consists of the heart and vessels leading to a spacious hemocoel in which most of the viscera are located. The kidneys are large metanephridia. Molluscs may be either gonochoristic or hermaphroditic. Spiral cleavage produces a characteristic veliger larva in most groups unless it is suppressed in favor of direct development or another larva. Molluscs are well represented in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial habitats. Bivalvia Bivalvia is a large class of molluscs whose shell is divided into right and left portions. There is usually a crystalline style but never a radula. Bivalves are flattened from side to side and the head is reduced and bears no special sense organs. The large mantle cavity is located on the sides and contains the large gills. -

Rester Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission September 2003 Introduction This is the third in a series of updates to the Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Annotated Bibliography of Fishing Impacts on Habitat originally produced in February 2000. The Commission’s Habitat Subcommittee felt that the gathering of pertinent literature should continue. The third update contains 52 new articles since the publication of the last update. The update uses the same criteria that the original bibliography and first and second updates used to compile articles. It attempts to compile a listing of papers and reports that address the many effects and impacts that fishing can have on habitat and the marine environment. The bibliography is not limited to scientific literature only. It includes technical reports, state and federal agency reports, college theses, conference and meeting proceedings, popular articles, and other forms of nonscientific literature. This was done in an attempt to gather as much information on fishing impacts as possible. Researchers will be able to decide for themselves whether they feel the included information is valuable. Fishing, both recreational and commercial, can have many varying impacts on habitat and the marine environment. Whether a fisher prop scars seagrass, drops an anchor on a coral reef, or drags a trawl across the bottom, each act can alter habitat and affect fish populations. -

This process aims to achieve the Good Environmental Status (GES) through the elaborated 11 Ecological Objectives and their respective common indicators. Since 2008, Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention have adopted the EcAp and agreed on a roadmap for its implementation. First phases of the EcAp process led to the accomplishment of 5 steps of the scheduled 7-steps process such as: 1) Definition of an Ecological Vision for the Mediterranean; 2) Setting common Mediterranean strategic goals; 3) Identification of an important ecosystem properties and assessment of ecological status and pressures; 4) Development of a set of ecological objectives corresponding to the Vision and strategic goals; and 5) Derivation of operational objectives with indicators and target levels. -

Eight species are recorded for the first time; 3 species were mentioned by name only (but not discussed) in the article by Barash & Danin (1982: 107) and 18 species have been dealt with in articles on individual Indo-Pacific immigrants. Along with the 29 species not yet discussed in earher reports, 4 species, which have been treated pre- viously are included in this paper for supplementary data (see general remarks, p. 130ff.). This report is based on material obtained from various sources, as follows: A great deal of dredging was carried out during 1974-1977 by the late Prof. Ch. Lewinsohn (Tel Aviv University) and his assistants M. Tom and B. Galil. They worked in the infralittoral zone in north and south Israel and opposite the Mediterranean coast of north Sinai. Among the material coUected by them the nudibranch Plocamopherus ocellatus is noteworthy because of its power of luminescence (O'Do- NOGHUE 1929: 808). -

Chapter 3: Affected Environment
3. AFFECTED ENVIRONMENT 3.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter of the Kemper County IGCC Project EIS presents information describing environmental and other resources that might potentially be affected by the proposed action or analyzed alternatives; it serves as a baseline from which the proposed project’s impacts are evaluated. This chapter describes the existing or baseline conditions of resources relative to the three major components of the proposed project: (1) the power plant, which is the component of the project that would be supported by the proposed action (funding and loan guarantee), and several offsite connected actions, including (2) the lignite surface mine, and (3) various linear facilities (pipelines and electric power lines). Environmental characteristics of the affected sites and rights-of-way, as well as their immediate surroundings, are described to levels of detail commensurate with importance of the issues or potential impacts. In most sections baseline conditions are described in detail. However, in some other sections, given the nature of some aspects of this project and the limited potential to impact some environmental resources, relatively brief information is provided to describe the existing environmental characteristics or baseline conditions. The information and data provided in this chapter were gathered during field surveys as well as drawn from literature reports, maps, databases, and other publicly available sources. Sources include specific, project- related environmental documents and permit applications that have previously been filed. The information is pre- sented in the following sections, which describe the physical, biological, environmental, socioeconomic, cultural, and aesthetic and other features and conditions of the project areas and their surroundings: • 3.2—Regional Setting and General Area • 3.11—Wetlands. -
