9 ouzo has its roots in tsipouro, which is said to have been the work of a group of 14th-century monks on mount athos. one version of it was flavoured with anise. this version eventually came to be called ouzo. modern ouzo distillation largely took off in the beginning of the 19th century, following greek independence.

GIN gin likely traces its origins to liquors produced back in the middle ages, with references to a spirit flavored with “genève”, referenced in a 13th century flemish manuscript. by the 1600s, the dutch were producing gin in earnest, with hundreds of distilleries in the city of amsterdam alone. gin is usually produced at between 35 and 47% alc./vol., with the lower end of this spectrum mainly affected by the prevailing laws in particular markets. many gin brands also have a higher strength bottling, often termed navy strength, aimed at the duty-free market and these are typically the high forties to 50% alc./vol.
