Granoff NUMBER OF PAGES: v, 95 ii ABSTRACT It is my contention in this thesis that the term tapas means heat, and heat only, in the Bi[ Veda. Many reputable scholars have suggested that tapas refers to asceticism in several instances in the RV. I propose that these suggestions are in fact unnecessary. To determine the exact meaning of tapas in its many occurrences in the RV, I have given primary attention to those contexts (i.e. hymns) in which the meaning of tapas is absolutely unambiguous. I then proceed with this meaning in mind to more ambiguous instances. In those instances where the meaning of tapas is unambiguous it always refers to some kind of heat, and never to asceticism. Since there are unambiguous cases where ~apas means heat in the RV, and there are no unambiguous instances in the RV where tapas means asceticism, it only seems natural to assume that tapas means heat in all instances. The various occurrences of tapas as heat are organized in a new system of contextual classifications to demonstrate that tapas as heat still has a variety of functions and usages in the RV. -

PEEFACE In submitting to the public the present Catalogue of Bengali books contained in the Library of the British Museum the compiler finds it necessary to explain the general principles of cataloguing adopted by him, and the special rules laid down for the treatment of Oriental names of authors and books. He has tried to observe throughout one consistent plan of transliteration, based on intelligible principles of etymology, yet rejecting alike the popular mode of writing names according to their modern pronunciation, and the pedantic system of referring everything back to its original Sanskrit form ; thereby making unnecessary deviations from proper Bengali idiom. -

The time span of the period is uncertain. Philological and linguistic evidence indicates that the Rigveda, the oldest of the Vedas, was com- posed roughly between 1700 and 1100 BCE, also referred to as the early Vedic period. The end of the period is commonly estimated to have occurred about 500 BCE, and 150 BCE has been suggested as a terminus ante quem for all Vedic Sanskrit literature. Transmission of texts in the Vedic period was by oral tradition alone, and a literary tradition set in only in post-Vedic times. Despite the difficulties in dating the period, the Vedas can safely be assumed to be several thousands of years old. The associated culture, sometimes referred to as Vedic civilization, was probably centred early on in the northern and northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent, but has now spread and constitutes the basis of contemporary Indian culture. Janamejaya said, “After Karna had thus been slain in battle by Savyasachin, what did the small (unslaughtered) remnant of the Kauravas do, O regenerate one? Beholding the army of the Pandavas swelling with might and energy, what behaviour did the Kuru prince Suyodhana adopt towards the Pandavas, thinking it suitable to the hour? I desire to hear all this. Tell me, O foremost of regenerate ones, I am never satiated with listening to the grand feats of my ancestors.” Vaisampayana said, “After the fall of Karna, O king, Dhritarashtra’s son Suyodhana was plunged deep into an ocean of grief and saw despair on every side. Indulging in incessant lamentations, saying, ‘Alas, oh Karna! Alas, oh Karna!’ he proceeded with great difficulty to his camp, accompanied by the unslaughtered remnant of the kings on his side. Thinking of the slaughter of the Suta’s son, he could not obtain peace of mind, though comforted by those kings with excellent reasons inculcated by the scriptures. Regarding destiny and necessity to be all- powerful, the Kuru king firmly resolved on battle. Having duly made Salya the generalissimo of his forces, that bull among kings, O monarch, proceeded for battle, accompanied by that unslaughtered remnant of his forces. Then, O chief of Bharata’s race, a terrible battle took place between the troops of the Kurus and those of the Pandavas, resembling that between the gods and the Asuras. -

Gods are numerous and each god or goddess shows very often mutually irreconcilable traits within him or her. This is equally true of Sarasvati, too. She is one of female deities of the Rgvedic times. She has got many peculiarities of her own resulting in complexity of her various conceptions through the ages. In the Rgvedic pantheon, among female deities, Usas, the daughter of the heaven is (divo duhita)/given an exalted place and has been highly extolled as a symbol of poetic beauty. Sarasvati comes next to her in comparison to other Rgvedic goddesses. But in the later period, Usas has lost her superiority and Sarasvati has excelled her. The superiority of Sarasvati is also obvious from another instance. In the Vedic pantheon, many ideitiet s arose and later on merged into others. If any one of them survived,/was mostly in an sterio- typed form. But with Sarasvati, there has been a gradual process of change and development. In her earliest stage, she was a spacious stream having rythmic flow and congenial waters. It was, therefore, but natural that it arrested the attention of seers dwelling along with its banks. They showed their heart-felt reverence to her. -

M. Witzel Report on the Atirātra ritual held in Kerala in April 2011 Due to generous support from SAI, in April 2011 a group of Harvard graduate students and I had the chance to attend a two-week 3000-year old Indian ritual, the Atirātra Agnicayana, held at Panjal in Kerala for the first time since 1975. This ritual is carried out very rarely: the last ones were performed in 1901, 1956, and in 1975, which I could not attend at the time. Therefore I was especially glad that I was able to attend this year’s performance, along with our graduate students. It was for them, just as for me, a unique chance to observe and record, at great length, this complex ritual that has been performed in its ancient form since about 1000 B.C.E. In preparation for our attendance we had studied the relevant texts that are available in print. The 12 days of ritual are summed up in the Baudhāyana Śrauta Sūtra (c. 500 BCE). It records minutely all the steps that have to be undertaken in its performance. This involves 17 priests, who have to be specially trained for this it long ritual. However, they are specialists in the recitation of Vedic texts that they have learned in family based special schools since their childhood. They therefore know the texts by heart, including the very intricate way of singing a large number of Vedic melodies (Sāman). When we arrived just before the ritual began, the offering ground in a large rice field had been well prepared, tents and sheds had been erected for the visitors, but especially so for the actual performance of the ritual. -
