I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This dissertation examines current academic approaches to reading South Asian- Canadian literature as a multicultural ―other‖ to Canadian national literature and proposes an alternative reading strategy that allows for these texts to be read within a framework of South Asian diasporic subjectivities situated specifically at the Canadian location. Shifting from the idea that ―Canada‖ names a particular national identity and national literary culture to the idea that ―Canada‖ names a particular geographic terrain at which different cultural, social, and historical vectors intersect and are creolized allows for a more nuanced reading of South Asian- Canadian literature, both in terms of its relationship to the complex history of the South Asian diaspora and in terms of the complex history of South Asian encounters with the Canadian space. Reading prose, poetry, drama, and theatrical institutions as locations where a specifically South Asian-Canadian diasporic subjectivity is reflected, I am able to map a range of individual negotiations among the cultural vector of the ―ancestral‖ past, the cultural vector of the influence of European colonialism, and the cultural vector of this place that demonstrate that the negotiation of South Asian-Canadian diasporic subjectivity and its reflection in literature cannot be understood as producing a homogenous or ―authentic‖ cultural identity. Instead, the literary expression of South Asian-Canadian diasporic subjectivity argues that the outcome of negotiations between cultural vectors that take place in this location are as unique as the individuals who undertake those negotiations. These individual negotiations, I argue, need to be read collectively to trace out a continuum of possible expressions of South Asian-Canadian diasporic subjectivity, a continuum that emphasizes that the processes of negotiation are on- iii going and flexible. This dissertation challenges the assumption that Canadian literature can be contained within the limits of a Canadian nationalist mythology or ethnography. Instead of the literature of the Canadian ―nation‖ or the Canadian ―people,‖ Canadian literature is best understood as the literature produced in this location by all the ―minority‖ populations, including the dominant ―minority.‖ Reading Canadian literature, then, is reading the differential relationships to history and community that occur in this place and which are inscribed in these collectively Canadian texts. iv Acknowledgements Writing this dissertation has been a long adventure fraught with complications. The answer really depends on how we choose to read those terms: Canadian national literature and South Asian-Canadian literature. If we choose to read either or both of these terms as marking out within creative texts a shared identity rooted in a cultural or ontological essential identity, then the answer is no. Some of the shots will turn out perfectly—balanced composition, candid expressions that capture the palpable energy of the event. Some won’t. I am, of course, but this is also the plight of prospective anthologists. Working without the benefit of hindsight, anthologists are responsible for scouting talent in little magazines, hard-to-find books, and critical periodicals. PRATI: THE EPIC PHASE IN CANADIAN POETRY Edwin John Pratt ( 1882-1964) dominates Canadian poetry in the first half of the twentieth century and, therefore, he belongs, at least chronologically, toa generation of artists who wit­ nessed two world wars and who, as a result of this appalling experience, set asirle the youthful enthusiasm of the Romantics and the didactic impulse of the Victorians to voice the pes­ simism of the new age. In Europe, the echoes of the old faith in man's ability to achieve a more meaningful existence could still be heard, but the dominant mood was one of scepticism about the progress and future of mankind. Romantic and post-Romantic .poets had generally adopted the role of guides who could provide the right orientation for existence. The most in­ fluential modero artists, on the contrary, chose to highlight man's decadence and frustration Against this, The poetry of E. J. Pratt, seems to be more Romantic than modero because this Canadian artist is essentially optimistic about man's potential and celebrates progress, strength and resilience instead of brooding on life-destructive forces. To a great extent, the reason for this vitality and optimism is to be found in the social and political climate that dominated Canadian life in the frrst decades of this century. In an article entitled ''The 1920s: E. J. Pratt Transitional Modero", the critic Sandra Djwa contrasts the aftermath of World W ar I in Europe and the United States with the effects that the conflict produced in Canada and explains the reasons for the wave of optimism that pervaded Canadian society when peace was restored: In Europe and in the United States, the reaction to the war had been one of profound disillusionment.

The investigation charts and analyzes the demographics of 64 poets who were published in 1967, and 75 poets who were published in four small press literary magazines in 2010. The 2010 magazines were purposely sampled as representatives of specific geographical areas in Canada (i.e., the West Coast, the Prairies, Central Canada, and the East Coast). The results indicate that in 1967 female poets were less likely to be published; however, 43 years later, this bias has been rectified.

This article is intended to explore the history of this discipline in the past 40+ years, fo- cusing on the growing awareness of Canada and its culture in Hungarian academic and intellectual life. As early as the mid-1980s, universities in Hungary offered various cours- es in Canadian Studies, which were followed by a large number of publications, con- ferences, and the institutionalization of the field. The article gives a survey of Canadian Studies in Hungary in the international context, showing the ways in which interaction with colleagues in Europe and beyond, and with institutions, such as the Central Euro- pean Association for Canadian Studies, has promoted the work of Hungarian researchers. The article also discusses the fields of interest and individual achievements of Hungarian scholars, as well as the challenges Canadian Studies has faced. Although these biculturals usually negotiate their lives between two cultural worlds with ease, there are situations where conflicts may arise because of an incompatibility between the norms associated with each culture. Our research has identified some key points where bicultural conflicts can occur for second generation Canadians. econd generation youth in Canada are the children of parents who immigrated to Canada from another country. Although there is a tremendous amount of diversity among individuals Swithin this second generation, they often share the feature of being bicultural. Culture can be defined by the norms and standards of a group that will delineate the appropriateness of behaviour. There was a weakening of the original impulse which Poetry generated new tendencies in the creative fields as well as in man's nature and goals pertaining to changing response to life, but it is a natural phenomena that one can neither wish to isolate nor escape from the human experience for long. Poets like Dorothy Livesay and E.J. Pratt grew anxious to cultivate a new poetic style which could capture the new substance of life and at the same time make a direct appeal to its readers. Their poetry is man-centered psychologically and intellectually. Like the role of nature, the significance of poetic devices like imagery and symbol is also redefined. Though the earliest Canadian anthology of any importance was E.H. Dewart's Selection from Canadian Poets which was published in 1864, it is A.J.M. Smith's The Book of Canadian Poetry which appeared in 1943 that presented the changes of taste and quality in poetry written between 1948 and 1957. Many subsequent anthologies like Smith's Oxford Book of Canadian Verse (1960) and Modern Canadian Verse (1967) include the representative works in both English and French. To understand Canadian Poetry of the mid-twentieth century one of the fundamental approaches is to look at a historical and insightful critical process, which A.J.M. Smith and E.K. Brown encouraged. It helped in two ways.
