Rapid Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) for: Euzophera bigella June 2018 Summary and conclusions of the rapid PRA Euzophera bigella is a moth found in much of Europe and parts of Asia, whose larvae (caterpillars) feed inside a variety of fruit and under the bark of a number of species of tree. Though there have been several adults caught in light traps in the UK, such records are very scarce and there is no evidence this species is established in any part of this country. Following the rapid screening of E. bigella via the UK Plant Health Risk Register, this PRA was requested to further assess the potential risk to the UK. This rapid PRA shows: Risk of entry The pathway of fruit (and nuts) is considered moderately likely, with medium confidence. Larvae have previously been found in imported fruit in the UK. If larvae were able to complete development inside the fruit, emerging adults would be capable of flying off and locating new hosts. The pathway of larvae under the bark of older trees for planting is considered moderately likely, with medium confidence. Larvae under the bark of younger, smaller trees is assessed as unlikely with medium confidence, as infestations produce swellings and cracks in the bark which are more likely to be seen in smaller trees. The pathway of wood with bark is considered unlikely with low confidence. Confidence is low because a different species of Euzophera has recently travelled from the USA to Italy on this pathway. 1 The pathway of natural spread is considered very unlikely with low confidence. -

New island record On 6 October 1995, Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife employee C. Joao submitted an unusual plant he found while work- ing in the Molokai Forest Reserve. The plant was identified as U. europaeus and con- firmed by a Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) nox-A survey of the site on 9 October revealed an infestation of ca. 19 m2 at about 457 m elevation in the Kamiloa Distr., ca. 6.2 km above Kamehameha Highway. Distribution in Wagner et al. (1990, Manual of the flowering plants of Hawai‘i, p. 716) listed as Maui and Hawaii. Material examined: MOLOKAI: Molokai Forest Reserve, 4 Dec 1995, Guy Nagai s.n. FAUSKEl AND R. D. GUSTIN 2 ABSTRACT. Twenty-seven species of the subfamily Crambinae known as sod web worm moths were collected from South Dakota. A key to species has been included as well as their distribution patterns in South Dakota. This study began after damage to rangeland in several South Dakota counties in the years 1974 and 1975. Damage was reported from Cor son, Dewey, Harding, Haakon, Meade, Perkins, Stanley and Ziebach counties. An effort was made to determine the species of Crambinae present in South Dakota and their distribution. Included are a key for species identification and a list of species with their flight periods and collection sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS Black light traps using the General Electric Fluorescent F ls T8 B1 15 watt bulb were set up in Brookings, Jackson, Lawrence, Minnehaha, Pennington and Spink counties. In Minnehaha County collecting was carried out with a General Electric 200 watt soft-glow bulb. Daytime collecting was used in several localities. Material in the South Dakota State University Collection was also utilized. For each species a map is included showing collection localities by county. Capps' The purpose of this paper is to provide a means for accurate identi- fication of the species of Euchromius Guen^e occurring in the Western Hemisphere and to provide names for two undescribed species, heretofore confused with Euchromius ocelleus (Haworth). Dehneations of genitalia were prepared by A. D. Cushman, scientific illustrator, Entomology Research Division, Agr. Res. Serv., U.S. Department of Agriculture, and are not drawn to scale. New information In the present paper, based on an examination of museum specimens, published records and new samples, a comprehensive and critical species list of Crambidae moths (Lepidoptera: Pyraloidea) is synthesised. In total, 8 subfamilies, 50 genera and 106 species have been recorded and these are listed along with their collection, literature references and biological data including chorotype, voltinism and the flight period in the study area. STANIStAW BtESZYNSKI (Zoological Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Krak6w) In the present paper it is discussed the status of the genus Euchro mius Guenee 1845 and several of its members, besides some species are described as new. The genus Euchromius Gn. is one of the 1nost disordered in the family Crambidca.e as the types of many of its species have not as yet been examined. Consequently, very many synonyms have been made. The status of the name Euchromius Gn. has usually been erroneously inter- . preted and regarded as a nomen nudum or a homonym. However, some authors, e. g. Meyrick (1890, 1895), Fernald [1896) or Kloet & Hincks [1945) adopted Euchromius Gn. as a valid name. The first species of the genus under consideration was erected in 1796 by Htibner under the name Tinea bella Hbn. In 18.11 Haworth described another species Palparia ocellea Haw., congeneric with Tinea bella Hbn. The genus Palparia Haw. 1811 is very heterogeneous comprising very many species of several genera, namely, Crambus F., Agriphila Hbn., Pediasia Hbn., Catoptria Hbn., Chrysocrambus Blesz., Platytes Gn. and Ancylolomia Hbn. The genus Palparia Haw. has not been adopted for any of the mentioned genera and, it is regared as a synonym · of Crambus F. Such an opinion might be considered as not right, since only genus Crambus F. was described before Palparia Haw. and the remaining genera were erected after 1811. -
Lepidoptera (Moths and Butterflies) at Inverness Ridge in Central Coastal California and Their Recovery Following a Wildfire
LEPIDOPTERA (MOTHS AND BUTTERFLIES) AT INVERNESS RIDGE IN CENTRAL COASTAL CALIFORNIA AND THEIR RECOVERY FOLLOWING A WILDFIRE J. A. Powell Essig Museum of Entomology, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720 Abstract.— In numbers of species, Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) make up the largest group of plant-feeding animals in North America. Caterpillars of nearly all species feed on plants, and most of them are specialists on one or a few kinds of plants. Therefore they are liable to be severely affected by wildfires, and secondarily, their parasites and predators, including birds, bats, lizards, and rodents, suffer losses of a major food resource. In October 1995, a wildfire swept over part of The Point Reyes National Seashore, burning more than 12,300 acres (5,000 hectares) of public and private land, following a fire-free period of several decades. I tracked survival and recolonization by moths and butterflies during the subsequent five seasons. I made daytime searches for adults and caterpillars approximately monthly from March through October and collected blacklight trap samples, mostly in May and September-October. More than 650 species of Lepidoptera have been recorded in the Inverness Ridge area, and about 375 of them were recorded during the post-fire survey, including larvae of 31% of them. Plants in a Bishop pine forest higher on the ridge, where the fire was most intense, accumulated their caterpillar faunas slowly, while Lepidoptera feeding on plants typical of riparian woods in the lower canyons reestablished sooner and more completely. Recolonization varied markedly among different plant species, and the species richness gradually increased, in marked contrast to generalizations about effects of fire on arthropods derived from fire management of grasslands.
