    ________________________________________________________________________ Lesser Prairie-Chicken Habitat Map for Portions of Eastern New Mexico ________________________________________________________________________ 16 November 2005 Lesser Prairie-Chicken Habitat Map for 1 Portions of Eastern New Mexico Paul Neville, Teri Neville, and Kristine Johnson2 ABSTRACT The purpose of this project was to provide a map depicting the extent and location of lesser prairie-chicken habitat in New Mexico. The 923,441 ha (2,281,868 ac) study area includes most of the remaining occupied habitat for the lesser prairie-chicken in the state. We used field data in conjunction with satellite imagery and aerial photography to create a vegetation map. We classified the map according to plant associations and subsequently regrouped it into map units that incorporated landforms, to reflect the habitat requirements of lesser prairie-chickens. We performed GIS analyses incorporating vegetation type, patch size, and fragmentation to identify areas of high quality lesser prairie-chicken habitat. These analyses demonstrate that only three places within the mapped area contain large patches of suitable habitat, and one of those is south of US 380, where LPCH populations are already sparse and scattered. The GIS analyses also indicate that the vast majority of high-quality vegetation types occur in patches smaller than 3200 ha, rendering them by most definitions below the minimum size required by LPCH.   • Insect Survey of Four Longleaf Pine Preserves
    A SURVEY OF THE MOTHS, BUTTERFLIES, AND GRASSHOPPERS OF FOUR NATURE CONSERVANCY PRESERVES IN SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA Stephen P. Hall and Dale F. Schweitzer November 15, 1993 ABSTRACT Moths, butterflies, and grasshoppers were surveyed within four longleaf pine preserves owned by the North Carolina Nature Conservancy during the growing season of 1991 and 1992. Over 7,000 specimens (either collected or seen in the field) were identified, representing 512 different species and 28 families. Forty-one of these we consider to be distinctive of the two fire- maintained communities principally under investigation, the longleaf pine savannas and flatwoods. An additional 14 species we consider distinctive of the pocosins that occur in close association with the savannas and flatwoods. Twenty nine species appear to be rare enough to be included on the list of elements monitored by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program (eight others in this category have been reported from one of these sites, the Green Swamp, but were not observed in this study). Two of the moths collected, Spartiniphaga carterae and Agrotis buchholzi, are currently candidates for federal listing as Threatened or Endangered species. Another species, Hemipachnobia s. subporphyrea, appears to be endemic to North Carolina and should also be considered for federal candidate status. With few exceptions, even the species that seem to be most closely associated with savannas and flatwoods show few direct defenses against fire, the primary force responsible for maintaining these communities. Instead, the majority of these insects probably survive within this region due to their ability to rapidly re-colonize recently burned areas from small, well-dispersed refugia.

Males of Agathymus estelleae take courtship sentry positions near ten­ eral virgin females long before the females are ready to mate. Males of Agathymus mariae are territorial and pursue virgin females that approach their territories. Ovipo­ sition patterns of the two species are very similar. Females alight on or near the plants to oviposit and do not drop ova in flight. Few detailed observations of the courtship and oviposition of the skipper butterflies in natural environments have been published. For the family Megathymidae Freeman (1951), Roever (1965) (and see Toliver, 1968) described mating and oviposition of some Southwestern U.S. Agathymus, and over a hundred years ago (1876) Riley published an excellent paper on the life history of Megathymus yuccae (Bois­ duval & LeConte) which included data on oviposition of the female; otherwise, only the scantiest comments have been made. C. L. Rem­ ington (pers. comm.) and others tell us that there is a significant pos­ sibility that the Hesperioidea are less closely related to the true but­ terflies (Papilionoidea) than to certain other Lepidoptera and even that the Megathymidae may not be phylogenetically linked to the Hesper­ iidae. For several years we have been making on-the-scene studies of these two aspects of megathymid behavior, both for their interest in understanding the whole ecology of these insects and for their possible reflection on higher relationships.

Abstract Administered by the USDA Forest Service, the Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands occupy 230,000 acres of public land extending from northeastern New Mexico into the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. A mosaic of topographic features including canyons, plateaus, rolling grasslands and outcrops supports a diverse flora. Eight hundred twenty six (826) species of vascular plant species representing 81 plant families are known to occur on or near these public lands. This report includes a history of the area; ethnobotanical information; an introductory overview of the area including its climate, geology, vegetation, habitats, fauna, and ecological history; and a plant survey and information about the rare, poisonous, and exotic species from the area. A vascular plant checklist of 816 vascular plant taxa in the appendix includes scientific and common names, habitat types, and general distribution data for each species.
