SYSTEMATICS OF THE MEGADIVERSE SUPERFAMILY GELECHIOIDEA (INSECTA: LEPIDOPTEA) DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Sibyl Rae Bucheli, M.S. ***** The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Dr. John W. Wenzel, Advisor Dr. Daniel Herms Dr. Hans Klompen _________________________________ Dr. Steven C. Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae.

Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Abstract A list of 1531 species ofLepidoptera is presented, collected over 15 years (1988 to 2002), in eleven southern West Virginia counties. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains,

  • Courtship and Oviposition Patterns of Two Agathymus (Megathymidae)
Journal of the Lepidopterists' Society 39(3). 1985. 171-176 COURTSHIP AND OVIPOSITION PATTERNS OF TWO AGATHYMUS (MEGATHYMIDAE) DON B. STALLINGS AND VIOLA N. T. STALLINGS P.O. Box 106, 616 W. Central, Caldwell, Kansas 67022 AND J. R. TURNER AND BEULAH R. TURNER 2 South Boyd, Caldwell, Kansas 67022 ABSTRACT. Males of Agathymus estelleae take courtship sentry positions near ten eral virgin females long before the females are ready to mate. Males of Agathymus mariae are territorial and pursue virgin females that approach their territories. Ovipo sition patterns of the two species are very similar. Females alight on or near the plants to oviposit and do not drop ova in flight. Few detailed observations of the courtship and oviposition of the skipper butterflies in natural environments have been published. For the family Megathymidae Freeman (1951), Roever (1965) (and see Toliver, 1968) described mating and oviposition of some Southwestern U.S. Agathymus, and over a hundred years ago (1876) Riley published an excellent paper on the life history of Megathymus yuccae (Bois duval & LeConte) which included data on oviposition of the female; otherwise, only the scantiest comments have been made. C. L. Rem ington (pers. comm.) and others tell us that there is a significant pos sibility that the Hesperioidea are less closely related to the true but terflies (Papilionoidea) than to certain other Lepidoptera and even that the Megathymidae may not be phylogenetically linked to the Hesper iidae. For several years we have been making on-the-scene studies of these two aspects of megathymid behavior, both for their interest in understanding the whole ecology of these insects and for their possible reflection on higher relationships.

Volume 7 1 February 2010 Number 3 The Taxonomic Report OF THE INTERNATIONAL LEPIDOPTERA SURVEY TIPS ON COLLECTING AND REARING IMMATURES OF 375 BUTTERFLY AND SKIPPER TAXA JACQUE WOLFE 459 East 2700 South Apt 16, Salt Lake City, UT 84115 JACK HARRY 47 San Rafael Court, West Jordan, UT 84088 TODD STOUT 1 1456 North General Drive, Salt Lake City, UT 84116 ABSTRACT: Rearing techniques are discussed for 375 different butterfly and skipper taxa from Utah and beyond. Additional keywords: ova, larvae, pupae, over wintering, obtaining and caring for immatures INTRODUCTION The authors of this paper, Jacque Wolfe, Jack Harry, and Todd Stout, with contributions from Dale Nielson have over 100 years combined experience collecting and rearing butterflies. This publication includes natural and lab host plants. We hope that this information will help you avoid some of the mistakes and losses we have experienced. We also hope that this publication will encourage someone who has only collected adults to give rearing a try. For those new to rearing we encourage starting small. Not only can rearing provide perfect specimens but also provide knowledge regarding the life histories of butterflies, which includes how to find caterpillars or how to entice live females to lay eggs. The advantages justify the time and effort it requires. Another advantage of rearing is that some species, like Papilio indra and Megathymus species, are difficult to collect as adults. Therefor, rearing them can be much easier. For example, collecting larvae or netting a single live female can result in obtaining a nice series of perfect specimens.

  • The Butterfly Drawings by John Abbot in the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, University of Georgia
VOLUME 61, NUMBER 3 125 Journal of the Lepidopterists’ Society 61(3), 2007, 125–137 THE BUTTERFLY DRAWINGS BY JOHN ABBOT IN THE HARGRETT RARE BOOK AND MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY, UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA. JOHN V. C ALHOUN1 977 Wicks Dr., Palm Harbor, FL 34684 ABSTRACT. Artist-naturalist John Abbot completed 105 drawings of insects that are now deposited in the Hargrett Rare Book and Manu- script Library, University of Georgia. The provenance of these drawings is unknown, but available evidence dates them to ca. 1820–1825. The adults in the 32 butterfly drawings are identified and the figures of larvae and pupae are assessed for accuracy. The illustrated plants are also identified and their status as valid hosts is examined. Abbot’s accompanying notes are transcribed and analyzed. Erroneous figures of larvae, pupae, and hostplants are discussed using examples from the Hargrett Library. At least four of the butterfly species portrayed in the drawings were probably more widespread in eastern Georgia during Abbot’s lifetime. Additional key words: Larva, Lepidoptera, pupa, watercolors In 1776, the English artist-naturalist John Abbot METHODS (1751–ca.1840) arrived in Georgia, where he I visited the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript documented species of animals and plants for the next Library (University of Georgia) in April, 2005. Digital six decades. Living in Burke, Bullock, Chatham, and photographs were taken of John Abbot’s butterfly Screven Counties of eastern Georgia, he explored a drawings and their accompanying notes. The adult region roughly bound by the cities of Augusta and butterflies were identified and the figures compared Savannah, between the Oconee, Altamaha, and with those in other sets of Abbot’s drawings that are Savannah Rivers.
