Reviews Keith Loria, on theatermania.com, called the show “a tender glimpse into the Hineses’ rise to fame and a touching tribute to a brother.” Benjamin Tomchik wrote in Broadway World, that the show “seems determined not only to love the audience, but to entertain them, and it succeeds at doing just that! While Tappin' Thru Life does have some flaws, it's hard to find anyone who isn't won over by Hines showmanship, humor, timing and above all else, talent.” In The Washington Post, Nelson Pressley wrote, “’Tappin’ is basically a breezy, personable concert.     Love, Oh Love, Oh Careless Love Careless Love is perhaps the most enduring of traditional folk songs. Of obscure origins, the song’s message is that “careless love” could care less who it hurts in the process. Although the lyrics have changed from version to version, the words usually speak of the pain and heartbreak brought on by love that can take one totally by surprise. And then things go terribly wrong. In many instances, the song’s narrator threatens to kill his or her errant lover. “Love is messy like a po-boy – leaving you drippin’ in debris.” Now, this concept of love is not the sentiment of this author, but, for some, love does not always go right. Countless artists have recorded Careless Love. Rare photo of “Buddy” Bolden Lonnie Johnson New Orleans cornetist and early jazz icon Charles Joseph “Buddy” Bolden played this song and made it one of the best known pieces in his band’s repertory in the early 1900s, and it has remained both a jazz standard and blues standard. In fact, it’s a folk, blues, country and jazz song all rolled into one. Bessie Smith, the Empress of the Blues, cut an extraordinary recording of the song in 1925. Lonnie Johnson of New Orleans recorded it in 1928. It is Pete Seeger’s favorite folk song. Careless Love has been recorded by Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash.     “Million Dollar Quartet” By Colin Escott & Floyd Mutrux At the Hippodrome Theatre through December 2 By James Cooper MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS … PRODUCTION Flashing lights, shimmering jackets and long musical solos radiate through the production of “Million Dollar Quartet,” now at the Hippodrome Theatre. Though the special effects and costumes are beneficial in some instances, the show lacks emphasis in the one area it should stress the most: the music. The whole story focuses on the decisions of four major musicians from the 1950s: Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. Music is the main concept within the script, but it certainly isn’t the main concept within the performance. The show focuses on a single event: the night that all four musicians of the “Million Dollar Quartet” were present in the same space at the same time, the Sun Records Studio in Memphis on December 4, 1956. Elvis (Cody Slaughter) used to be a member of the Sun Records family but then he switched to RCA, a bigger label. Since this change, Elvis has lost contact with his former producer, Sam Phillips (Vince Nappo). As Elvis returns with his girlfriend Dyanne (Kelly Lamont) he makes it clear to Sam that he wishes he had stayed at Sun. Sam too wishes that Elvis had stayed, but his main focus is now on producing Johnny (David Elkins) and the up-and-coming Jerry Lee (Martin Kaye). All the while Carl (Robert Britton Lyons) has to decide whether or not he wants to leave Sun Records or move on to Columbia.

    “Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)”—The Eagles (1976) Added to the Registry: 2016 Essay by Marc Eliot (guest post)* The Eagles In 1971, the arrival of The Eagles signaled a major shift in popular musical tastes in America. If Woodstock was the funeral for both the music and the culture of a decade of drugged out, hippie, free love and cultish idealism, the Seventies was the decade of blatant decadence, political cynicism, sexual distrust, and rampant narcissism. No band represented both the rejection of the Sixties and the celebration of the Seventies more than its crown princes, the Eagles. Songs like “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Witchy Woman,” “One of These Nights,” and “Already Gone,” filled with spirited playing, close harmonies and an overlay of the Eagles’ war between the sexes, comprise four of the ten selections included in the initial compilation of Eagles’ hit songs from their first four albums, “Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975).” Ironically, although the Eagles’ laid-back sound was bright and natural as Southern California sunshine, none of the original four members were Golden State natives (Don Henley, vocalist, lyricist, drummer, was from Texas, bred on bluegrass and country music; Glenn Frey, vocalist, lyricist, rhythm guitar, pianist, came from the streets of Detroit, influenced by the music of Motown and mentored by Bob Seger; Randy Meisner, on bass, was a veteran bar band night sider out of Nebraska; Bernie Leadon, guitar, mandolin, banjo, was a Minnesotan who loved and loved to play classic country). Each migrated separately to Los Angeles, like lemmings, to The Troubadour, the musical and cultural ground zero club on Santa Monica Boulevard, owned and operated by Doug Weston, who favored putting on his stage country-rock bands and female vocalists.
