Paste Magazine profiles the new Pokey LaFarge project “Singer-songwriter Pokey LaFarge shares his new single “End of My Rope” via Paste today (Feb. 6). “End of My Rope”—the second single to be released for LaFarge’s first new album in over three years, Rock Bottom Rhapsody—brings folk music and rock ‘n’ roll together in a way that feels fresh. “I like to think of ‘End of My Rope’ as kind of a Charlie Feathers meets The Everly Brothers meets T-Rex kind of sound,” LaFarge tells Paste, continuing: For me, the foundation of the song’s meaning is in the opening line: “Growing up was easy for some, but not me, and getting older is the same old story.” So we have a subject who is looking back over all the years that have passed, and feeling all of his mistakes turned into haunting memories—memories of missed opportunities, and all the friends and ac- quaintances that have become so distant over the years. He has a flood or a confluence of emotions, feeling like everyone and everything has seemingly slipped through his fingers. He’s overwhelmed, but he knows there’s only one thing for a singer to do: get back up on stage and “let the spotlight shine the skin off my bones.” A collection of 13 tracks produced by Chris Seefried (), Rock Bottom Rhapsody is set for release on April 10, LaFarge’s New West Records debut. “The man singing these songs isn’t exactly the same man that wrote them,” says LaFarge in a statement. “This album is about the story of who I used to be.” In 2018, LaFarge experienced a complete downward spiral into a dark place of self destruction and anxiety. “It’s a case of me writing the story and writing the song, and then unfortunately living it,” he reflects. “I was going towards the darkness. Destruction definitely ensued; self-sabotage and self-destruction definitely happened.” In fact, his darkness, temptation, and what he calls “evil spirits and demons” took over his life. Rock Bottom Rhapsody comes from the perspective of a soul in crisis, but shortly before the recording of the album, LaFarge experienced a spiritual awakening—what he recalls as “finding God.” His newfound faith pushed him to finish recording the album and to make a piece of art with dark tracks that eventually found their light at the end of the tunnel. LaFarge has also announced his tour in support of Rock Bottom Rhapsody, which starts April 24 in Rotterdam and begins in the U.S. on May 8 in Asheville, N.C.” - Paste, 2/6/2020 American Songwriter gives four stars to Katie Pruitt’s Expectations “Debut albums, especially those on major imprints, tend to be either under or over produced. Katie Pruitt wisely splits the difference on this striking first effort. It’s even more impressive because she co- produced it. Pruitt’s even keel of balancing stark, introspective and extremely personal lyrics with songs that are both stripped down and embellished with ornately arranged, multi-layered instrumentation (no less than six guitarists are credited along with strings, vibraphone and backing vocals) helps make this such an immediately captivating listen. There’s a maturity and self-assurance on the appropriately titled Expectations that’s remarkable, especially for an artist’s initial release. It’s all there, or most of it, in the opening “Wishful Thinking.” Pruitt starts the ballad with a simple, uncluttered figure as she sings “I don’t believe in love dear” in a hushed, delicate voice. Gradu- ally haunting keyboards, backing vocals, subtle drums and strings enter, leave, and reappear as the lyrics and Pruitt’s voice in- crease in intensity. The song closes with “You were never mine” repeated with a full confluence of instruments as she unleashes a voice every bit as powerful and passionate as that of Brandi Carlile. It’s a perfect inauguration to Pruitt’s multi-talented per- sona. She handles her vocal firepower delicately throughout these ten songs, untethering it often for just a sentence at a time as she comes to the realization in “My Mind’s a Ship (That’s Going Down)” that “Love’s the only thing that matters anyhow.” Anyone looking for an obvious single can stop with the title track where Pruitt takes Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” rhythm un- derpinning and sings “I wasn’t getting much out of life at all/I was scared to jump ‘cause I was scared to fall.” She’s open about her sexuality in the almost wincingly personal “Normal,” a potent recap of her gradual understanding that “If I could be normal/ then trust me I would” sung with a bittersweet, reserved lilt that questions, then comes to an understanding of, where she fits in. Musically Pruitt carefully balances on a folk, pop and singer/songwriter tightrope with tunes that wrap her words around melodies which hover, float and sometimes sting. On “Grace Has a Gun” the concept of mental illness is explored and “Search- ing for the Truth” is as close as she comes to a political statement with the words “Keep searching for the truth in a world that’s always lying.” At the end of ten tracks and just over 45 minutes you not only have a reasonable understanding of who newcomer Katie Pruitt is as a person, but know that this near flawless introduction is the auspicious start of a career that shows incredible prom- ise.
