According to Mosaic ALeviticus 25 law ( ) jubilees should be celebrated every 50th year. All slaves would then be freed and all loans would be written off. In the Middle Ages special opportunities to free oneself of one’s sins were given every twenty- fifth year in Christian Europe. In modern history 50th anniversaries of the creation of nations, the reigns of kings and queens and various other stable anniversaries have been celebrated. To jubilate has also acquired the mean- ing of expressing joy, quite simply of celebrating: in dulci jubilo. Riksdagens Jubileumsfond has celebrated anniversaries during the past year that both mark stability and express joy. Riksdagens Jubileumsfond was established 40 years ago to celebrate the tercentenary of the Bank of Sweden. Since the foundation’s 40th anniversary coincided with the 10th anniversary of the Humanities and Social Sciences Donation, we took the opportunity to express double joy at being able to celebrate these, for us, important events. During the year that has passed the foundation has therefore really justified its name. The celebration of our 40th anniversary began on 2 December 2004 with a retrospective conference held in the Riksdagen, the place where the foun- dation was born. The celebrations ended with a forward-looking seminar – The Next Step – which was held on 7 October 2005, 40 years to the day after the first research grants were approved. On this occasion the funds were awarded to seven young researchers with a doctor’s degree who were guaranteed four years’ support, with a possible three-year extension and consequent employment at one of our universities. These posts were linked to the distinguished chairmen whom the foundation had had the privilege of having ever since its establishment. In this way we live up to the founda- tion’s tradition of combining historical awareness with being firmly rooted in the present and the future. During the past year the research project on the foundations that were created when the wage-earners investmentfund were released ten years ago has presented its report. Under the editorship of Professor Sverker Sörlin, the book I den absoluta frontlinjen (In the Absolute Front Line) describes what the foundation has achieved with the funds that the government trans- ferred as a donation to the foundation’s capital base in the form of a special humanities and social sciences foundation. This Humanities and Social Sciences Donation was praised by the examiners for “helping to improve the foundation’s profile in the research system and for linking up in a natu- ral way with the foundation’s statutes, which state that the foundation’s funds shall especially be used to support major, long-term projects’”. Apart from these more narcissistic celebrations, Riksdagens Jubileumsfond has also awarded grants to and played an active part in other anniversary activities. The largest ones are, of course, the grants to celebrate the cen- tenary of the dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway. The foundation contributed to the celebration of the centenary of Dag Hammarskjöld’s birth with the publication of Kaj Falkman’s book Att föra världens talan (To Speak for the World) in both Swedish and English. Other anniversaries that have been supported during the year are the preparations for the Linnaeus celebrations in 2007 and in 2009 to celebrate the separa- tion of Finland from Sweden and the new constitution. 7 8 Riksbankens Jubileumsfond Finally, the foundation has awarded a large initial grant for the publi- cation of the collected works of Selma Lagerlöf. This year, in 2006, it was 100 years ago since Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige (The Wonderful Adventures of Nils) was published, now translated into 60 languages. In two years, in 2008, it will be 150 years since Selma Lagerlöf was born and the following year, in 2009, it will be 100 years since she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Judging by the applications and other contacts we have received, the foundation will also be involved in the coming years in yet more anniversary awards. So there will be many opportunities to express pride and joy, to jubilate! Even though we cannot free any slaves or write off any debts, we were able to look over our activities and our allocation principles before our anniversary, so that we could start a new round, free from sin. As reported in last year’s annual report, from 2005 the foundation has decided to allo- cate funds to major research programmes (6–8 years) on one occasion and with the requirement that the universities and the like involved are joint financiers. Our resources allowed that only one such programme could be approved among the year’s applications. After a very careful prepara- tory process and after negotiations with the management of Stockholm University, the Board decided unanimously that this year’s programme should be awarded to a research team consisting of linguists and language experts under the leadership of Professor Kenneth Hyltenstam. Fortunately, the positive development of the foundation’s capital last year has continued at an increasing pace, which means that last year’s results are the third best in the history of the foundation. During the past year the finance department and the finance committee have worked intensively to achieve a stable yield over the long term, which will also ensure a continu- ing good distribution to first-class research work. This means that by 2006 another two major programmes can receive support, and more young researchers will also be able to develop their own projects in collaboration with national or international colleagues. In order to contribute to greater stability in the future, Riksdagens Jubileumsfond has actively helped to reinforce over the long term the role of the humanities and the social sciences and their importance to society. As well as creating large research environments, there is a need for increased internationalisation and collaboration with the professional fields that are relevant to these sectors. Together with the Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, the foundation has started to collaborate with museums and cultural institutions of a national character in order to attain better and more permanent cooperation between research and practice.
