JAFFNA CENTRAL COLLEGE OLD BOYS ASSOCIATION BRANCH

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2017

Saturday, 26th August 2017 6.00 pm

Community Centre Hall, Bambalapitiya Flats, Colombo 04.

College Song

Wet the ground and wind opposing, Just ten minutes yet to play; Play up Central, no reposing On the gains of yesterday. Now's the time for combined action; Pass the ball from man to man, Never selfish play nor faction, Proved worthwhile since sport began.

(Chorus) Central rally for the School then, Take the field with one accord; Keep your courage cool and clean then, Central's flag must ne'er be lowered.

On the field of life when striving, Keep your honour true and bright, Play up Central ever thriving On the fruits of grace and light; For your comrades of the old days, Scattered far though, they may be; For your school and for her true praise, Live in service glad and free!

(Chorus)

Message from the President

Time to Work Together

Dear Old Centralites of the World,

We have 07 OBAs in Jaffna, Colombo, London, Sydney, Toronto, Paris and Oslo. With a combined age of 250 years or more. Our Alma Mater is 201 years old.

There are active old boys in the US, NZ, Swiss and Melbourne as well. The JECT (JCC Edu Care Trust) is also busy and purposeful working with the College.

Our numbers are our strength. Let's capitalize on our combined strength, brothers.

We need to connect more with each other, sharing our school-related information, helping each other and doing more good to the School.

That involves a clear and helpful dialogue with the Principal and the School Administration as a two-way process.

We have no doubt that the Administration will work in tandem with the old boys and make matters easy for themselves with our assistance. After all the old boys are the College's Partners in Progress.

Friends, “Clear Communication” are the need of the hour from now on to propel our Alma Mater towards improved performance in both education and sports.

Therefore, let us old boys and the OBAs

(1) Communicate and reach a consensus among us on various issues that crop-up from time to time.

(2) Discuss matters on a positive note with the Principal and help him find solutions.

After all, we are our College's Partners in Progress!

6

We are certain that the Principal and the School Administration would make optimum use of our goodwill and the finances.

Thereby, Central's flag will never be lowered. Our duty is to ensure it!

Centrally yours,

S. S. Sivakumar President, Col OBA 2014/15 2015/16 2016/17

Hony. Secretary’s Report – 2016-17

This report summarises the main activities of the Jaffna Central College, Colombo Old Boys Association (COBA), for a period of about nine months, since the last AGM which was held on 22nd October 2016.

Any names and or activities omitted are by mistake and not by design. My apologies in advance.

COBA is headed by Mr.S.S.Sivakumar, President for the third year in succession with a team of passionate old boys and a single lady. A heady mix of vintage, variety, youth and experience.

The Executive Committee (Ex-Co) meets monthly at the Methodist Memorial Church Hall, Colombo 6. Reputed old boys from abroad who pass through Colombo are invited and recognised at these meetings. So are the scholarship-recipient undergrads, from time to time.

Numerous informal meetings are also held at short notice, when the occasion demands. Attendance at the monthly Ex-Co meeting is an average of 14 to 16. Two members resigned from the Ex-Co, mid-way during the term due to personal commitments.

Sub-Committees, headed by individual Chairmen are appointed for the ease of operations in the following areas: Education Membership Drive Media & Website Sports and Recreation Fund-Raising & Joint Scholarship Programme.

Education - Dr. A.Sivasothy, Chairman

We screen and select the needy undergrads from JCC and provide them monthly cash allowances, thanks to the magnanimity of our members. We monitor the educational progress of recipients.

8

Mr. M. Amirthanayagam, Vice President, has been supporting an undergraduate from the with Rs5,000/- per month, since 2016.

Mr. S. S. Sivakumar, President provides Rs.5,000/- on a monthly basis to an undergraduate from the Sabragamuwa University, since January 2017.

Mr. P. Nadaraja, Life Member and his family, pay Rs.10,000/- annually to an undergrad from the Peradeniya University, since January 2017.

Mr. S. Prabaharan, Vice President, has come forward to offer Rs.5,000/- per month to a deserving undergraduate. The Education Committee to finalize the recipient soon in consultation with the Donor.

An old boy Donor from Jaffna, who prefers anonymity, offered an initial sum of Rs.5,000/- to an Undergraduate from the University of Moratuwa in July 2017. COBA facilitated this meritorious act and has ensured that the student receives a further Rs.10,000/- per year as well, as part of our Joint Scholarship Programme.

JCC Educare Trust(JECT): As a gesture of goodwill, Mr. S. S. Sivakumar has committed Rs.240,000/- in his personal capacity for one year's Special English Classes for Grade 1 & 2 at JCC. The classes are in session from May 2017. The first quarterly installment of Rs.60,000/- has been paid already. An English Tutor is paid Rs.20,000/- monthly under this programme by the JECT.

Mr. Kris Krishnakumar, Chairman, JECT, met our President Mr. S.S Sivakumar and Dr. A. Sivasothy, Vice President in Colombo, a month ago. The discussion centered on the ongoing work done by the JECT at JCC.

Dr.A.Sivasothy and Mr. S. P. Rajeevan met the Principal Mr. S. K. Elilventhan and discussed a Motivational Programme, targeting the Teachers of Ordinary Level at Central. Well known Educationists led by a former Vice Chancellor are to be invited for a day of lecture and role-play at a holiday resort, away from Jaffna. Certain delays were experienced with the implementation of this epoch-making programme because of the crowded calendar of activities at Central during the first two terms.

We await the feedback and the co-operation of the Teachers / Principal and aim to conduct the programme as early as possible. Target: To encourage and ensure better results in the GCE-OL exam.

9

Membership Drive - Mr Victor Forman, Chairman

More concentrated efforts are made to enrol new members. As of today, we have 289 registered life members including seven enrolled during the last nine months.

COBA was saddened with the untimely demise of Mr.S.Sivarathikan during December 2016. He was a very long-standing and devoted member who rendered yeoman services as the Treasurer and Vice President during different years.

Mr. K. Mahendranathan, who was instrumental in reactivating COBA during the 1980s/90s succumbed to injuries in a road accident in Jaffna during July 2017. He was a passionate contributor to COBA and JCC, in his role as the Secretary and Vice President at different times. Please refer to our tributes included herein in the booklet.

Media / Website – Mr. K. Rajkumar, Chairman

COBA is known as an efficient and tireless e-mail communicator among the global old boys fraternity. School news, both in Studies and Sports, are shared with OBAs and old boys at regular intervals. This has not only created more awareness but togetherness as well from all corners during the last 07/08 years.

We intend to continue the trend in the years ahead as well. The ultimate aim is for all OBAs to speak in one voice with the College Administration and get things done to the benefit of the Students.

There are times monies badly needed by the School, be it for the ground development or travel abroad of national level sportsmen, are collected at short notice, thanks to the e-mail thrust of COBA.

A website for COBA is also in the making, spearheaded by Mr. C. Hariharan of our Ex-Co. We are filtering certain Developers and it would be a matter of time before we go live. Our grateful appreciation of the hard-working Hariharan, Rajkuamr and Rishvin.

10

Sports & Recreation / Mr. R. Satchithananthan, Chairman succeeded by Mr. Rishvin Isamth

Mr. R. Satchithanantahn who implemented a noteworthy scheme of supplying nutrition to the College Cricket First XI pool in 2016 continued as Chairman in 2017 as well. He resigned from the position a few months ago for personal reasons, paving the way for Mr. Rishvin Ismath to succeed him.

Information gathering from various Coaches of Central is a prime activity for us throughout the year. Such information is duly shared globally by e-mail by the President and the Chairman, Sports Committee.

We did not spend much on Sports Equipment for our College, unlike during in 2015 and 2016. Substantial sums were spent during those two years to motivate both the Players and Coaches. The new Weight-Lifting Bar costing Rs.215,000/- in the College Gym is one such grant by COBA during 2016.

We observe that the Canadian OBA and the Sydney OBA have contributed Rs.120,000/- each a fortnight ago for the air-travel of two U-18 Soccerites, selected from JCC for the Schools National Team, which would play in Iran in September 2017. We are pleased that the COBA is not alone anymore in raising such monies.

A dinner cum get-together was organized at the Chinese Dragon Cafe, Colombo 04 on 9th July, as a recreational activity and thirteen members of COBA and twelve ladies of the Vembadi Past Pupils Association, Colombo enjoyed a good time of nostalgia and fun.

There are plans to play a softball game of cricket with the Old Johnians in the months ahead after the AGM. As well as a day's trip to a nearby holiday resort with our counterparts and families from the Vembadi PPA.

Fundraising Committee / Mr. M. Amirthanayagam, Chairman

Amir is a proven specialist on the subject and a man for all seasons despite his tight schedule with Engineering and Construction. He leads from the front and is at ease dealing with the Corporate and other Businesses.

We are indebted to the other members of the Ex-Co as well who rise to the occasion by collecting funds through donations, advertisements, banners and sponsorships to meet our needs.

11

Dear friends, more funds have become necessary to further expand our activity of funding the education of the needy students of JCC. Therefore, we appeal to the benevolent old boys to support our clarion call for more funds in future. Banking details could be easily found at the back pages. We urge you to support your beloved Alma Mater through us-the COBA.

Joint Scholarship Programme - Two Committees

Mr. R. Ranjitkumar, Chairman, Scholarship Trust Committee Mr. F.X.C.Hariharan, Chairman, Scholarship Committee

This has been our core activity during the last 12/13 years as the custodian of Donor Funds received from many parts of the World. Also from three OBAs and a number of ardent old boys.

Mr. Gerard David and Mr. M.S.Aboobucker with the help of Mr. R. Bhaskaran have played the pivotal role to distribute scholarship funds on time to the deserving A/Level students and the needy undergraduates who entered universities from JCC. A very responsible and painstaking job as the task are four-fold, involving the Donors, Recipient Students, School and COBA.

We are proud to state that 289 scholarships have been awarded so far and the committee continues it dedicated work in processing and distributing the allocated funds. Donor funds are placed on Fixed Deposits and the interest earned are utilized to pay Rs.5,000/- and Rs.10,000/- respectively to the AL Students and the University undergraduates annually. During the month of June 2017, Rs.227,500/- have been released under this scheme.

We express our profound appreciation to the following Donors whose contributions were received during the last 10 months:

Prof. Sam Maheswaran,USA - Rs.429,050/- JCC,OBA,Canada - Rs.1,000,000/- Mr. Noel Arasaratnam, UK - Rs.100,000/- Mr. & Mrs. B Sivakumar, - Rs.100,000/- Mr. S. S. Sivakumar, Sri Lanka - Rs.500,000/- Total received: Rs.2,129,050/-

As you would appreciate, the more deposits we have, more interest could be earned to the benefit of more recipients.

12

We look at you with an open mind and arms. No amount is too big nor too small.

Please contribute.

Your giving will create quality products from our beloved Alma Mater, which created you and me.

We are thankful to Mr. S.S.Sivakumar, President, who set the ball rolling in December 2016 to pay a stipend of Rs.5,000/- to a volunteer Administrative Office Assistant at JCC Office. Mr. K. Jeyabalasingam, Vice President, offered to continue same on a monthly basis for 12 months till December 2017. Amount committed by him: Rs.60,000/-

Purpose: Motivation to the volunteer Office Assistant to be of support to COBA to furnish a variety of information, mainly with the Award of Scholarships and others as and when necessary. We are grateful, dear Mr. K. Jeyabalasingam.

Other key Activities during 2016-17:

The annual Joint Carol Service and Dinner with Vembadi Past Pupils Association (VPPA) was a successful event to which members from both camps contributed in unison. It was held at the Methodist Memorial Church, Moor Rd, Colombo 06, for the 10th successive year. Quite an achievement!

Thamil Maalai – 2: Brain-child of Mr. R. Puniamoorthy, Ex-Co, COBA as a Joint Venture with VPPA, for the second time in 03 years. A full house at the Thamil Sangam Auditorium, Colombo 6, was treated to a wide variety of Thamil dance, song, music, speech and debating artistry. It was an occasion for both Associations to raise funds as well for the poor segment of students of both schools.

Conclusion: I say with all modesty that this year was a phenomenal success. We are good learners who improve, year on year. Team work has been our mantra. We remain transparent and accountable while communicating on time with all stake holders, namely, the Principal and the School Administrators, Donors, OBAs, Old Boys Worldwide and well-wishers. Not to forget our own members and the Ex-Co who are the silent pall-bearers of success at the COBA.

13

Thank you lady and gents of the Ex-Co.

We remain focussed and stronger than ever to support the upliftment of our beloved Alma Mater's academic standards and sports activities. The financial support for the identified needy students of our College is our priority, not without the support and enthusiasm of the Principal Mr.S.K.Elilventhan and his Team of Teachers. Together, we hope to scale greater heights in the years ahead.

My best wishes to the next Team of Ex-Co to be elected on 26th August 2017.

Central's flag must never be lowered.

Victor Forman – Hony. Secretary, COBA 1972-83, JCC

Brief history of the Joint Scholarship Programme

The Joint Scholarship Scheme was the ‘Brain Child’ of young Mr.B.Shaiskanthan,an old Centralite Engineer, now residing in Canada. His idea was mooted during an Executive Committee meeting of the Colombo OBA (COBA) in September 1999 and was unanimously accepted by the OBA headed by Mr.K.Kanag-Iswaran, PC with Mr.M.Arulanantham as the Secretary at that time.

COBA took the initiative to propagate the idea to the other OBA Branches. Canada, UK and Sydney Branches responded immediately.

A scholarship fund was opened at , Kollupitiya Branch. Local OBA members and overseas OBAs started funding and the scheme was launched in 2001.

Objective: To provide financial assistance to the needy but bright students of Jaffna Central College to pursue higher studies in Sri Lanka.

Mr. K.Thayaparan, past President played a lead role to formalize the scheme. Applications for scholarships are called through the Newspapers, including those printed in Jaffna. Twenty Advanced Level students and ten University Undergrads are selected annually. The selection is made by the Scholarship Committee based on certain criteria such as performance in the GCE OL and AL exams, family income, physical disability, period of study in JCC, extracurricular activities etc. The recommendations of the Principal and the area Grama Sevaka are vital and the final selection is merit-based.

An Advanced Level student is awarded Rs.5,000/- annually for two years, while a University student receives Rs.10,000/- per annum during his stay at the Varsity. The payments are released in two installments each year during June and November.

It is a condition that the recipients promptly acknowledge receipt of payments and thereby qualify themselves for the subsequent payment.

The donor funds are placed in fixed deposits with reputed banks and the interest earnings are utilized to facilitate the payments, twice a year, as stated above.

15

COBA is both humble and proud to declare that 289 students from our Alma Mater have benefitted so far under this noble Scheme. Past Presidents, Hony. Secretaries, Treasurers and the members of the Scholarship and the Trust Committees are gratefully remembered at this juncture for their dedication and the successful continuity of the scheme. Special mention must be made of M/S K. Kanag-Iswaran, M. Arulanantham, K. Thayaparan, Late E. Nadarajah and L.Gnanapragasam for their tireless inputs. Various Scholarship Secretaries namely Late N. Sri Pragasa, S.Rajkumar, late K. Mahendranathan, P.Ramanathan and Thushy David have ensured the smooth functioning to the delight and relief of the recipients. M/S Gerard David and M.S.Aboobucker have continued dedicatedly thereafter to today, supported by R. Bhaskaran.

F.X.C.Hariharan is the present Chairman, Scholarship Committee while R Ranjitkumar functions as the Chairman, Scholarship Trust Committee.

We are pleased to add that funds totaling to Rs.2.1 million have been donated by OBAs and individual Donors during the last 10 months of year 2017, evidencing the donor trust of the prudent management of the scheme by the COBA.

COBA will continue its appeal and quest for more funds and thereby assist more needy and deserving students of Central to become better in life.

Our desire is to increase the amounts payable as well as the number of beneficiaries.

Dear old boys, please feel free to play your part, donate funds and be of added thrust to the COBA endeavour.

Thank you.

Tribute to a Diehard Centralite Mahendranathan

The good never die. They remain etched in our memory. In every nerve and sinew.

Mahendranathan's life-long marriage to JCC began in the mid 60s when he joined our great Alma Mater to do his A/Levels.

Thus began his tireless journey of sincere application and selfless commitment to the "Cause of Central" for 52 long years.

Our College was his first love and second home. He made it a habit to help various Principals of different eras with administrative and other functions.

Such rendition became more or less full time, especially after his retirement fm the Railways Dept.

He revived our Colombo OBA (COBA) during the 80s/90s and activated it from dormancy, combining with a few other stalwart Old Boys.

Membership-drive was his mainstay. Moreover, he played a pivotal role to effectively administer the Joint Scholarship Programme of the COBA and won the hearts and minds of the Advance Level and Undergrad recipients.

Mahen had two mobile phones. One worked full time, day and night, on Central-related matters, liaising with our old boys, all over the world. I hasten to add that he neglected his personal health to a great degree, devoting himself to propagate Central.

He never sought positions. It was an uphill battle for me to convince him to accept the position of Vice President, COBA. He was the President, Secretary and Treasurer, all three combined during his vibrant years with COBA.

All the more, we named him as the "Mighty Atom Mahen"! Small in stature. Stupendous in his servitude to Central.

17

He had the uncanny ability to remember our old boy names, events, times and even the exam and match results. Was a full-blooded Mobile Encyclopedia of the Central Kind.

We learn that he was working relentlessly hard in Jaffna to release the belated Bi-Centenary Souvenir.

We, the COBA, appeal to Mr. S.K. Elilventhan, Principal, JCC to allocate a page to Mahen in the Souvenir and print this humble tribute. Mahen deserves nothing more, nothing less. Our Principal knows the core of Mahen.

Dear Mahen, we the Community of Centralites and the Principals and Teachers - past and present - will miss your simplicity, humbleness and unfettered contribution to JCC's progress.

You have set the standards for the rest of the old boys to follow. You deserve nothing but the heavenly abode. Good bye, dear Mighty Atom.

S S Sivakumar President, COBA 1961-72, at JCC

Tribute to Late Mr. K. Mahendranathan

A Gifted and Dedicated Old Boy of Jaffna Central College, who Preserved JCC’S Integrity and its Position as a Leading College in Sri Lanka

It is with deep grief that all the Centralites received the news of the demise of Mr Mahendranathan (Mahen), who dedicated his life to the welfare and progress of our Alma Mater. He always focused on preserving JCC’s position as a leading school in Sri Lanka.

Mahen was motivated by his elder brother the late Dr.Ragunathan, to enrol at JCC in the mid sixties. He enjoyed watching cricket and was a JCC cricket fan even before joining the college. He knew well most of the JCC cricket captains and players who had represented JCC since the mid sixties. He remembered his past teachers Mr Sivaveerasingham and Mr Rajasenan and passionately talked about them.

After completing his studies at JCC he joined the Railways in Sri Lanka and worked in Colombo. However, his passion for cricket continued and he made time to watch JCC playing against St Johns College, a game popularly known as the ‘Battle of the North’. In 1986 he assumed duty as the Station Master of the Jaffna Railway Station. This new position in Jaffna suited him well as it allowed him to help the JCC in its welfare activities. In 1990 he was elected as the secretary of the Centralites Sports Club, Jaffna At this time he was responsible for renovating the JCC play ground which was badly affected by the conflict. This made it possible to play the after several years. In 1992 he returned to Colombo but continued to serve JCC on several activities. He was instrumental in reorganising the Colombo branch of the JCC OBA in 1993 as it had been defunct since 1983.

Mahen’s interest in our college always kept on flourishing. He was instrumental in organizing the inaugural Central Nite in Jaffna through the Jaffna Branch of the JCC OBA. This was a tremendous success and it paved the way for establishing the ‘Students In Need Project (SIN)’ to support our students. In recognition of Mahen’s talent the UK branch of the OB&GA requested him to serve the SIN Committee and he obliged to support this

19 prestigious project. His contributions and dedicated efforts on the the SIN project earned him a position as Secretary of the Students In Need Committee of the Jaffna branch of the JCC OBA. In recognition of his contributions to JCC he was honoured by the JCC OBA, UK in 2012

Mahen never cut himself off from the Central environment. His interests in sports earned him a position as secretary of the Jaffna Central College Pavilion and Ground Development Society (JCCPGDS). His contributions as secretary of the JCCPGDS and executing some of the critical tasks were well recognised and appreciated by all the Centralites and Teachers. Above all he guided the JCC Bicentenary Committee in successfully organising various ceremonial events. Mahen has also supported the committee in collecting, collating and compiling various articles from the past students for the Bicentenial Souvenir of JCC. Sadly, Centralites are going to miss him on the historic occassion of launching the Bicentenial souvenir on 1st of August 2017.

We are grateful for his contributions to JCC. He remains a shining beacon in the minds and hearts of all the Centralites, and his legacy will be remembered by his friends, Centralites and JCC staff.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time of grief.. Words can't describe the terribly sad news. May God give light and peace to his family

Prof R K Guganesharajah and Mr V Shivakumaran (Past President of JCCOBA, UK)
