Plant common name Description of Plant Picture of Plant Scientific name Strangler Fig The Strangler Fig begins life as a small vine-like plant Ficus thonningii that climbs the nearest large tree and then thickens, produces a branching set of buttressing aerial roots, and strangles its host tree. An easy way to tell the difference between Strangle Figs and other common figs is that the bottom half of the Strangler is gnarled and twisted where it used to be attached to its host, the upper half smooth. A common tree on kopjes and along rivers in Serengeti; two massive Fig trees near Serengeti; the "Tree Where Man was Born" in southern Loliondo, and the "Ancestor Tree" near Endulin, in Ngorongoro are significant for the local Maasai peoples. Wild Date Palm Palms are monocotyledons, the veins in their leaves Phoenix reclinata are parallel and unbranched, and are thus relatives of grasses, lilies, bananas and orchids. The wild Date Palm is the most common of the native palm trees, occurring along rivers and in swamps. The fruits are edible, though horrible tasting, while the thick, sugary sap is made into Palm wine. The tree offers a pleasant, softly rustling, fragrant-smelling shade; the sort of shade you will need to rest in if you try the wine. Candelabra The Candelabra tree is a common tree in the western Euphorbia and Northern parts of Serengeti. Like all Euphorbias, Euphorbia the Candelabra breaks easily and is full of white, candelabrum extremely toxic latex. One drop of this latex can blind or burn the skin. -

Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

This floristic project takes a geological approach inspired by Dalea reverchonii (Comanche Peak prairie clover), which is primarily endemic to glades of the Walnut Formation. The Cretaceous Walnut Formation (Comanchean) lies on the drier western edge of the Fort Worth Prairie in North Central Texas. Its shallow limestone soils, formed from alternating layers of hard limestone and clayey marl, support a variety of habitats. Glades of barren limestone typically appear on ridgetops, grassland savannas form on eroding hillslopes, and seeps support diverse hyperseasonal vegetation. Vouchers were collected from January 2010 to June 2012 resulting in 469 infraspecific taxa, 453 species in 286 genera and 79 families. The richest five plant families are Asteraceae (74 taxa), Poa- ceae (73), Fabaceae (34), Euphorbiaceae (18), and Cyperaceae (17). There are 61 introduced species. Results indicate floristic affinities to limestone cedar glades of the Southeastern United States, the Edwards Plateau of Central Texas, and calcareous Apacherian Savannas of Southwestern North America. Oklahoma Native Plant Record 73 Volume 5, Number 1, December 2005 Additions to the Flora of Garvin County, Oklahoma: Including a Complete Vascular Plant Checklist Priscilla H. C. Crawford Oklahoma Biological Survey, University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK 73019 A species list created from the Oklahoma Vascular Plants Database (OVPD) indicated that Garvin County, Oklahoma had been neglected by botanists. Our objective was to collect all vascular plant species encountered during three growing seasons to increase our botanical knowledge of the county. A total of 387 species were collected; 174 of these species had not been previously recorded for Garvin County in the OVPD. As a result, 14 families and 62 genera were added to the known flora of Garvin County. The majority of the species collected during this survey are assigned to five families of flowering plants: Poaceae (70 species), Asteraceae (63), Fabaceae (39), Cyperaceae (17), and Euphorbiaceae (16). Forty eight species (representing 13% of the taxa collected during this study) were not native to the United States; the families Poaceae and Fabaceae (with 18 and 10 species, respectively) exhibited the greatest number of introduced species collected in this survey. Five taxa on the Oklahoma Natural Heritage Inventory working list of rare Oklahoma plants were encountered. This collection effort increased the total number of vascular plant species recorded in the Oklahoma Vascular Plants Database for Garvin County to 628 species.
