Verbs are a key issue worth studying as Chinese is a verb-prominent language. One of the three books on the wars, the Art of War is a gem in the Chinese military heritage with profound ideas and meticulous logic. The verbal anaphora in the book is striking and unique besides the philosophical ideas and military strategy. Focusing on the verbal anaphora, this paper has a comparison and descriptive study on six authoritative versions of The Art of War through the analysis verbs in the book to summarize the translation strategies of verbal anaphora in classical Chinese. Index Terms—verbal anaphora, repetition, zero anaphora, synonym anaphora, cohesion I. INTRODUCTION The Art of War, an ancient Chinese military treatise is impressive and influential with its profound ideas and brief language. Besides the superb military strategy and profound philosophical ideas, the verbal anaphora in the book is striking, which is an issue worth researching to convey the charm of the language to the western readers. Also known as reference or cataphora, anaphora focuses on the referring and the repetition of the antecedent.

The Lettres édifiantes et curieuses écrites des missions étrangères (Edifying and Curious Letters Written from Foreign Missions), a collection of these missionaries’ correspondences, revealed how the Jesuits described their impression of the city Beijing and the imperial court, their religious activities, and their scientific works. These descriptions played a role in shaping the Europeans’ view of China, contributing to the rise of “chinoiserie” in eighteenth-century Europe. French Jesuits dominated the West’s “Beijing experience” during the eighteenth century. Using a wide-ranging selection of archival, library, and digitized sources from libraries and archives in East Asia, Europe, and the United States, this project investigates the production, regulation, and reading of the Peking Gazette (dibao, jingbao), a distinctive communications channel and news publication of the Qing Empire (1644-1912). Although court gazettes were composed of official documents and communications, the Qing state frequently contracted with commercial copyists and printers in publishing and distributing them. As this dissertation shows, even as the Qing state viewed information control and dissemination as a strategic concern, it also permitted the free circulation of a huge variety of timely political news. Readers including both officials and non-officials used the gazette in order to compare judicial rulings, assess military campaigns, and follow court politics and scandals. As the first full-length study of the Qing gazette, this project shows concretely that the gazette was a powerful factor in late imperial Chinese politics and culture, and analyzes the close relationship between information and imperial practice in the Qing Empire. By arguing that the ubiquitous gazette was the most important link between the Qing state and the densely connected information society of late imperial China, this project overturns assumptions that underestimate the importance of court gazettes and the extent of popular interest in political news in Chinese history.

Burke’s experiences before his entry into politics, particularly his relationship with the bookseller Robert Dodsley, may be used both to illustrate the political and intellectual debates that infused those networks, and to deepen our understanding of the publisher-author relationship at that time.     Dissenting from Edward Young’s Night Thoughts: Christian Time and Poetic Metre in Anne Steele’s Graveyard Poems KATARINA STENKE Abstract: Although the Particular Baptist poet Anne Steele (1718 -1778 ) is little known today, this article argues that her poems on time and death offer valuable insights into wider religio-poetical representations of time in the mid-eighteenth century. Her verse both responds to and departs from the conventions of graveyard poetry as exemplified by Edward Young’s Night Thoughts (1742 -6), demonstrating close engagement with this popular subgenre as well as an intelligent critique of its devotional poetics. As such, Steele’s writing foregrounds yet also problematises emerging distinctions between writing and religion, and thus argues for new methodologies in religious and literary history.
