Secades Medical Department, Ferrer, 08029 Barcelona, Spain; [email protected] Abstract: Head injury is among the most devastating types of injury, specifically called Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). There is a need to diminish the morbidity related with TBI and to improve the outcome of patients suffering TBI. Among the improvements in the treatment of TBI, neuroprotection is one of the upcoming improvements. Citicoline has been used in the management of brain ischemia related disorders, such as TBI. Citicoline has biochemical, pharmacological, and pharmacokinetic characteristics that make it a potentially useful neuroprotective drug for the management of TBI. A short review of these characteristics is included in this paper. Moreover, a narrative review of almost all the published or communicated studies performed with this drug in the management of patients with head injury is included. Based on the results obtained in these clinical studies, it is possible to conclude that citicoline is able to accelerate the recovery of consciousness and to improve the outcome of this kind of patient, with an excellent safety profile. Thus, citicoline could have a potential role in the management of TBI. Introduction Phospholipids are major constituents of cell membrane and are found in all tissues and subcellular compartments as mixtures of various molecular species such as phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylinositol (PI), sphingomyelin (SM), and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) depending on the type of polar head groups and the degree of unsaturation of the acyl chains. Among these phospholipids, PC and PE represents a major constituent of cell membranes. The demand for lecithin with high PC and PE content from vegetable or cereal source is increasing these days, particularly in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, and other applications due to their emulsifying properties and nonantigenic nature. The application of lecithins in pharmaceutical and cosmetics domain depends mainly on the PC and PE with its saturated or unsaturated fatty acid content. Figure 1. Classification of phospholipids. However, their use is not widely standardized in the current clinical practice. This is the consequence of large variability in the performance of nebulisers, patient compliance and a deficiency of robust preclinical and clinical data. Nebulised antibiotherapy may play a significant role in future pulmonary drug delivery treatments as it offers the potential to achieve both a high local drug concentration and a lower systemic toxicity. In this review, the physicochemical parameters required for optimal deposition to the lung in addition to the main characteristics of currently available formulations and nebuliser types are discussed. -

Abstract: Iodine deficiency is a global issue and affects around 2 billion people worldwide, with preg- nant women as a high-risk group. Iodine-deficiency prevention began in the 20th century and started with global salt iodination programmes, which aimed to improve the iodine intake status globally. Although it resulted in the effective eradication of the endemic goitre, it seems that salt iodination did not resolve all the issues. Optimal Foods 1. Almonds: high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, with 20% of calories coming from protein and dietary fiber. Nutrients include potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin E and an antioxidant flavonoid called amygdlin also known as laetrile. 2. Barley: Like oat bran it is high in beta-glucan fiber which helps to lower cholesterol. Nutrients include copper, magnesium, phosphorous and niacin. 3. Berries : The darker the berry the higher in anti-oxidants. Nutritionally they are an excellent source of flavonoids, especially anthocyanidins, vitamin C and both soluble and insoluble fiber. 4. Brussels Sprouts : Similar to broccoli, and a member of the cabbage family, it contains cancer fighting glucosinolates. Nutritionally it is an excellent source of vitamin C and K, the B vitamins, beta-carotene, potassium and dietary fiber. 5. Carrots: It contains the highest source of proviatamin A carotenes as well as vitamin K, biotin, vitamin C, B6, potassium, thiamine and fiber. 6. Dark Chocolate: It is rich in the flavonoids, similar to those found in berries and apples, that are more easily absorbed than in other foods. It also provides an amino acid called arginine that helps blood vessels to dilate hence regulating blood flow and helping to lower blood pressure. Choose high-quality semisweet dark chocolate with the highest cocoa content that appeals to your taste buds. 7. Clinical Significance of Small Molecule Metabolites in the Blood of Patients
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Clinical signifcance of small molecule metabolites in the blood of patients with diferent types of liver injury Hui Li1,2,5, Yan Wang1,5, Shizhao Ma1,3, Chaoqun Zhang1,4, Hua Liu2 & Dianxing Sun1,4* To understand the characteristic of changes of serum metabolites between healthy people and patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection at diferent stages of disease, and to provide reference metabolomics information for clinical diagnosis of liver disease patients. 255 patients with diferent stages of HBV infection were selected. 3 mL blood was collected from each patient in the morning to detect diferences in serum lysophosphatidylcholine, acetyl-l-carnitine, oleic acid amide, and glycocholic acid concentrations by UFLC-IT-TOF/MS. The diagnostic values of four metabolic substances were evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The results showed that the optimal cut-of value of oleic acid amide concentration of the liver cirrhosis and HCC groups was 23.6 mg/L, with a diagnostic sensitivity of 88.9% and specifcity of 70.6%. The diagnostic efcacies of the three substances were similar in the hepatitis and HCC groups, with an optimal cut-of value of 2.04 mg/L, and a diagnostic sensitivity and specifcity of 100% and 47.2%, respectively. The optimal cut-of value of lecithin of the HBV-carrier and HCC groups was 132.85 mg/L, with a diagnostic sensitivity and specifcity of 88.9% and 66.7%, respectively. The optimal cut-of value of oleic acid amide of the healthy and HCC groups was 129.03 mg/L, with a diagnostic sensitivity and specifcity of 88.4% and 83.3%, respectively.
