The congregation is made up of singles, couples and families. We welcome all members of our community, including interfaith families, and feel that a congregation should be a friendly welcoming place and the anchor of a caring com- munity. We are going to share a safe and meaningful service for our congre- gation. Cantor Haimowitz will be leading the cantorial part of the service alongside Rabbi Rubin. Look for the information in the mail. I hope we can enjoy the services as a congregation. The Strategic Planning Committee is visiting proposed sites and we hope to have positive information as soon as possible. The Men's Club and Sisterhood have provided programs to keep our congregation going. We have had services for Shabbat as well as Shavuot. Temple Beth Or is a functioning Temple. The office is open every day from 9AM until 1PM. Our phone messaging system is monitored every day. If you need to reach us call the office. Stay safe and read the information we send out. 6 Temple Beth Or The Vine A MESSAGE FROM OUR RABBI By Rabbi Robert Rubin It is Time to Reflect Rosh Hashanah is coming. The month of Elul comes before it. Even this month of Elul is a time for “cheshbon hanefesh” (an accounting of the soul) – a time to reflect on where we are and how we got here. This self-reflection applies to us as individuals and to us as a community. As individuals, we consider what we have done well in the past year and what we have not done so well. What can we improve in ourselves? In what areas do we need to pay more attention? What good things can we strengthen? What bad things can we fix? As individuals, we think about how we can move positively into the future. As communities, we also consider what we have done well in the past year and what we have not done so well. This applies to our larger national American and world-wide human societies. This also applies to our local Temple Beth Or community. This past year has been a difficult one – for many individuals and for our congregation. There have been changes in routine and in our daily patterns of life. There has been uncertainty to what we face next – as individuals and as a congregation. The month of Elul guides us to look at our reality and find our way to move forward as the end of Elul leads immediately into Rosh Hashanah and the new year ahead. The shofar is sounded throughout Elul (other than on Shabbat and erev Rosh Hashanah) to call us to action, to wake us up to our situation and push us to make things better. May we come together – as individuals and as a community – to accept the challenge and rise to the occasion, and help one another to not only face our future but to shape it for the better. 7 Temple Beth Or The Vine “Help one another is part of the religion of our sisterhood” SISTERHOOD NEWS AND EVENTS Louisa May Alcott President: Marlene Vogel August 31 at 7:30 pm Paid Up Membership Meeting. Information on Holidays, Torah, and Judaism in general The URJ website The NFTY website, has lots and lots of resources 2 Dear Wonderful RCVPs of NFTY Ohio Valley, Welcome to the best network! NFTY is a Jewish organization, so it is our job, whatever the event or program is, to add some Jewishness to all of it, and help the rest of our board to incorporate Judaism into their programming. This packet will discuss what it is we all can do to make our experiences Jewish in a meaningful way throughout the year. This job is whatever you make it to be, as with any TYG board position. If you put in the work, you can see incredible results and a huge impact on your fellow Jewish teens, and even the community as a whole. Regional events are only several times a year; in order for our movement to make as big of a difference as it can, we all have to be the leaders we were chosen to be, and make NFTY’s impact a year round process. Often times, the RCVP is viewed as a position where you just plan services and cultural programs.

TYG Guide 2005 11/1/05 10:01 AM Page 67 CHAPTER 6 RELIGIOUS & CULTURAL PROGRAMMING & SERVICES G od spoke to Moses sa ying, Speak to the entire assembly of the Children of I sra el and say to them: You shall be holy, for holy am I, Adonai, your God . — Leviticus 19:1 TYG Guide 2005 11/1/05 10:01 AM Page 69 THE PHILOSOPHY OF A CREATIVE SERVICE What are prayers? Prayer, with its root in antiquity, grew out of the need for people to turn inward as well as outward to connect with the Divine. Jews also view prayer as a time to gather as a community. There are three basic classifications of prayer: praise, petition and thanksgiv- ing, and these three ingredients always comprise a Jewish worship service through the use of blessings, poetry, singing, and meditation. Are the prayers in a service in any particular order? Yes! We should begin our prayers with a proper frame of mind. We warm up with readings, songs or poems. The Barchu is our official call to worship. The first line of the Barchu is literally a command stated by one person to the entire congregation, and the congregation traditionally only recites the second line. The following prayers—Ma’ariv, Ahavat Olam, Shema, V’ahavta and G’ulah—form a tight unit consisting of Creation, Revelation and Redemption. These are the three ways God interacts with us the world: God set the world into motion and now we are partners with God in the ongo- ing task of Creation; God revealed the Torah to us as Jews and now we must embark upon a life of filled with Torah;; and together, God’s and our actions can usher in a better world.

  • Ahavat Olam Beit Yisrael Amcha Ahavata – with an Eternal Love You Have Loved Your Nation
Dear Friends, I hope you all had a relaxing winter vacation. We are now proud to present our next set of Tefillah Tips-Shabbat Shacharit Part 2. Daven well!! AHAVA RABBAH – WITH AN ABUNDANT LOVE The second and concluding blessing before the recitation of the Shema is Ahava Rabbah which means, With an abundant Love. Ahava Rabbah expresses our recognition of the overflowing love that G-d has for His people. There is a dispute recorded in the Talmud Brachot 11B regarding the appropriate wording for the opening phrase of this Tefillah. One opinion is Ahava Rabbah Ahavtanu – With an abundant love you have loved us; and the second opinion is Ahavat Olam Beit Yisrael Amcha Ahavata – With an eternal love You have loved Your nation. In practice we utilize both opinions – Ahava Rabbah in the morning at Shacharit and Ahavat Olam in the evening by Maariv. The Etz Yosef writes in his commentary on the siddur that the letter Zayin, which is numerically 7, is conspicuously missing in both Ahavat Olam and Ahava Rabbah. The reason for this is to reference the 7 potential types of love available in a natural immediate family i.e. a father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter and spouse. The missing Zayin – 7 in our Tefilllot demonstrate that the love that Hashem has for each and every one of us is more powerful and beyond even the closest family bonds in life. Rav Noach Orlowek shlitta of Jerusalem often mentions in his lectures how vital it is to teach our children and remind ourselves of G-d’s infinite love for all of His creations.

  • Roslyn Jhunever Barak: Song and Spirit: a Cantor's Life Congregation
Oral History Center University of California The Bancroft Library Berkeley, California Roslyn Jhunever Barak Roslyn Jhunever Barak: Song and Spirit: A Cantor’s Life Congregation Emanu-El, San Francisco, 1987-2015 Interviews conducted by Basya Petnick 2014-2015 Copyright © 2017 by the Regents of the University of California Since 1954 the Oral History Center of the Bancroft Library, formerly the Regional Oral History Office, has been interviewing leading participants in or well-placed witnesses to major events in the development of Northern California, the West, and the nation. Oral History is a method of collecting historical information through tape-recorded interviews between a narrator with firsthand knowledge of historically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of preserving substantive additions to the historical record. The tape recording is transcribed, lightly edited for continuity and clarity, and reviewed by the interviewee. The corrected manuscript is bound with photographs and illustrative materials and placed in The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and in other research collections for scholarly use. Because it is primary material, oral history is not intended to present the final, verified, or complete narrative of events. It is a spoken account, offered by the interviewee in response to questioning, and as such it is reflective, partisan, deeply involved, and irreplaceable. ********************************* All uses of this manuscript are covered by legal agreements between The Regents of the University of California and Roslyn Barak and between the Regents and Basya Petnick, dated April 17, 2017 and April 19, 2017, respectively. The manuscript is thereby made available for research purposes.
