Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity.

Data on the webs, prey spectrum, density and fecundity ofTheridion impressum from three different habitats [fields of sunflower, fiddleneckPhacelia ( ), and apple trees] are presented and discussed. The volume of webs were found to vary between 5 (the first free instar) to 117 cm3 (subadult and adult specimens). The mean density of adult spiders per plant was 0.7 (sunflower), 1.5 (fiddleneck) and 1.2 (per apple branch). Spiders preferred to build webs in the upper part of vegetation or at the extremities of tree branches. The prey spectrum was assessed by collecting webs and identifying their contents. Prey items were primarily aphids (73%), Diptera (7.5%), and Coleoptera and Hymenoptera (both 5.4%). Pests comprised 90% of the prey; the remaining 10% was ac­ counted for by natural enemies, pollinators and other insects. The number of insects captured in webs differed among study habitats (sunflower > fiddleneck > apple tree) though this difference was not statistically significant. Due to greater numbers of aphids in webs on sunflower, the mean prey length was significantly smaller on sunflowers than in other plots. An index of fecundity was ob­ tained by counting the number of eggs in eggsacs. This varied from 48 to 156 per eggsac and was not significantly different between study plots.

All published and unpublished results of revisions of material in DRENSKY's collection have been used in the present study to clarify the difficult taxonomical situati- on, caused by insufficient descriptions and loss of materials. From two new genera and 48 new spe- cies and subspecies described by DRENSKY only 18 taxa are currently regarded as valid, 6 others stand as species inquirendae. Three new synonyms are proposed: Echemus babunaensis DRENSKY, 1929 = Zelotes tenuis (L. KOCH, 1866), Theridion perestirensis DRENSKY, 1929 = Th. nigrovariegatum SIMON, 1873; Zora affinis DRENSKY, 1929 = Clubiona comta C. L. KOCH, 1839. 1. Introduction: DRENSKY started his studies about the Bulgarian spider fauna in 1910. Altogether he described two new genera and 48 new species and subspecies (DRENSKY 1910, 1915, 1921, 1929, 1931, 1935, 1938, 1940, 1942). The spiders were collected from the territory of the Balkan Peninsula (Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Turkey). The descriptions of most taxa are not well done, accompanied by insufficient and not precise drawings without scale. In many cases types were single specimens only. Some types were lost during the war. Until now types of the following species could not be found and are probably lost: Cyclosa strandjae (1915), Comaroma ressenensis (1929), Gonatium strugaense (1929), Porrhom- ma fons-frigidus (1929), Echemus babunaensis (1929), Troglohyphantes kratochvili (1935), Macedoniella karamani (1935), Mesioteles cyprius scopensis (1935), Coelotes pastor pirinicus (1942).

In India, the Linyphiidae is represented by 94 species in 39 genera in 19 states and 3 union territories and 48 species are endemic. In India, Oedothorax Bertkau, 1883 is the largest genus consisting 17 species. Maximum 32 species of these spiders were recorded in Jammu & Kashmir followed by 18 species each in Kerala, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. In northeast part of India, 12 linyphiid species are recorded in Meghalaya while no species is reported yet from Arunchal Pradesh, Nagaland and Tripura. Interestingly, larger states in central India like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Telangana are very poorly represented by these spiders and need extensive survey for these spiders. None of the linyphiid spiders of India are recorded as endangered or vulnerable species in IUCN Red List of threatened Taxa. Therefore, conservation efforts are immediately needed for their conservation practices.
