The directory is a listing of nonprofit associations, organizations, and mutual assistance and fraternal groups in the state of Minnesota that are controlled by people of color or primarily serve one or more communities of color. As with previous editions, the directory includes religious organizations and tribal governments, but does not include for-profit organizations or state offices. This edition also lists registered student organizations at the University of Minnesota and public charter schools that primarily serve communities of color. Although we tried to be as inclusive as possible given the constraints of time and resources, undoubtedly some organizations were omitted that should have been listed here. If you know of an organization that should be listed and is not, please contact CURA to let us know. Your calls are one of the most important ways the directory is kept inclusive and current. Organization Listings Each organization in the directory was placed in one of five categories based on the primary community served: African/African American, American Indian, Asian/Asian American, Latino/Latina, or Multicultural (for organizations that serve two or more communities of color). An index by main activity begins on page 125, an alphabetical index by organization begins on page 135, and an alphabetical index by community served begins on page 143. At the back of the directory, we also have provided mailing labels for each community group. These labels are formatted for use with the standard Avery Address Label 5160. For each organization listed, the directory provides name and address and, when available, primary contact person, phone number, fax number, e-mail address, website address, and a brief description. Not all of this information was available for each organization listed. If you know of changes, additions, or deletions to a particular listing, we would appreciate your contacting us to let us know. This directory also categorizes each organization by the main activity the organization engages in. The main activity categories used were originally developed by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits and other organizations as a way of categorizing the many different activities of nonprofit organizations throughout the country. The primary purpose of each organization— regardless of what else the organization may do—determined the category into which the organization was placed. For an explanation of what types of organizations are included in each of the categories, please refer to the list of main activity categories on page 123. Web Access The Directory of Nonprofit Organizations of Color in Minnesota is now available on the Web as a searchable database. Visitors can also search for specific organizations by ethnic/racial affiliation, main activity area, and keyword, and generate mailing labels for organizations based on the results of these searches. 2 • Directory of Nonprofit Organizations of Color in Minnesota The online directory will be updated approximately every six months to reflect additions, deletions, or changes to the organizations listed, and visitors can search for all listings that have been added or updated since this print version of the directory was published in January 2005. You can find the Directory of Nonprofit Organizations of Color in Minnesota on the Web at www.cura.umn.edu/publications/npoc.html. Updates to the Directory Our goal is to keep this directory as current and accurate as possible. Our main source of updated information comes from the organizations themselves. Beginning in June 2005, we will contact by mail approximately every six months all organizations listed here to verify that information is still correct. Any updates or changes we receive will be reflected in the online database. If your organization is listed in the directory, we would appreciate your help in ensuring that the information in our database is kept current by replying to these biannual notices. If we do not receive a reply telling us the information is correct or providing updated information, we will assume your organization no longer wishes to be listed in the directory. The online version of the directory also allows organizations already listed to correct or update their information online, and organizations not listed to enter information about themselves online and request that their organization be added to the directory (to use this feature, visit www.cura.umn.edu/publications/npoc/NPOC_form.php). If you do not have Web access, you can update information about your organization or request that your organization be added by contacting CURA at 612-625-7501 or [email protected]. Acknowledgments Many people helped to produce the fifth edition of the Directory of Nonprofit Organizations of Color in Minnesota. Anne Dulian provided invaluable assistance over the course of several months, diligently contacting organizations by phone and mail to update information. In addition, Iva Bunker, Pam Cosby, Claudia Fuentes, Stephanie Haddad, Valerie Lee, Hussein Samatar, Alicia Smith, Bao Vang, and David Zander offered information about new organizations in each community and helped review the final manuscript before publication. Many thanks to these individuals for their assistance. Any errors or omissions are the responsibility of the editor. How to Order Copies A limited number of copies of this directory are available at no charge. You can order by phone, fax, e-mail, or U.S. mail (see contact information on title page).
