Piemonte has an important history and a unique position right at the centre of the system of European development. With France on its western border and Switzerland on its northern one, Piemonte is naturally endowed with a strategic position in Europe and in the Mediterranean area, right at the crossroads of the main routes between the north and south, east and west.

Piemonte is part of the Mediterranean Alps Euroregion, an area with 17 million inhabitants, over € 490 billion GDP and exports for € 110 billion. As part of the European Union, companies located in “Piemonte is the perfect hub Piemonte access to the world’s richest consumer market for frequent fliers like us, of 500 million people, over 330 million of whom with everything in Europe to hand.” work in the single currency. A BROAD-RANGING STRATEGIC DESIGN, DISTRIBUTED ALL ACROSS THE REGION, ALONG THREE ESSENTIAL LINES: RENEWABLE ENERGIES, REDUCTION OF EMISSIONS, SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY.

Piemonte is investing signifi cant resources to support research in the energy and environmental sustainability domain. It is the European region that has earmarked most community resources in this fi eld: over 300 million euros that are added to the 500 allocated for innovation. Hydrogen technologies and photovoltaics are strategic priorities. In line with European objectives, the Region has set a target for 2020 to achieve 20% of renewable, 20% in savings and 20% reduction in greenhouse gases through the development of renewable technologies.

“Our relationship with the territory has been very strong. We are cooperating with the Università del Piemonte Orientale “A. PIEMONTE’S TRADITION IN CAR MANUFACTURING DRIVES THE DEVELOPMENT OF STRONG COMPETENCIES IN THE MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT OF MOBILITY WITH THE CREATION OF THE INFOMOBILITY CLUSTER.

Piemonte is one of the fi ve European “automotive intensive” regions. Particularly in the Torino area, where the Italian automotive industry was born, there is a unique concentration of expertise and skills. The region’s know-how encompasses all automotive sectors, combining traditional creativity and the most advanced technologies for product and process engineering. As the Wall Street Journal wrote regarding the Fiat-Chrysler negotiations, “the Italian automaker’s fuel systems have cutting-edge technology to offer. Fiat is at the forefront in the production of the smallest and cleanest gas engines, which guarantee a strong competitive advantage compared to other producers.”

SEVERAL UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTS AND PUBLIC AND PRIVATE RESEARCH CENTRES ARE ACTIVE IN THE FIELD OF PURE AND APPLIED RESEARCH IN NANOTECHNOLOGY.

Piemonte is part of an area with a high international potential in micro and nanotechnology, linked to major education and research centres in Italy, France and Switzerland. The convergence of nanoscale research with other sciences such as biology, chemistry and physics that link up with engineering, creates vast opportunities to enhance performance. In Piemonte industry can benefi t from a favorable environment that combines technology, materials and characterization know-how with the capacity to develop new applications.

“The great specialisation of Piedmont’s industrial fabric was a decisive factor.” E. Ronconi, Vice President Fuel System, Hutchinson

PIEMONTE IS SITUATED AT THE INTERSECTION OF THE THE LISBON-KIEV AND THE GENOVA- ROTTERDAM CORRIDORS, AND OPENS UP TO A MARKET OF 500 MILLION PEOPLE.

Piemonte is a territory with interesting prospects for those who want to set up or implement freight transport operations and high-quality activities in the logistics fi eld. This is thanks to the presence of highly developed networks of communication at a European level, integrated by road and railway systems. The region’s closeness to the ports of Italy’s Upper Tyrrhenian Sea makes Piemonte the natural extension of the port facilities, offering at the same time vast territories fully connected to the transport networks. This has led to the construction of some excellent freight interports, located in the urban areas of Alessandria, Novara and Torino.

“Among the decisive elements for choosing Torino were the presence of the research and development centres of the Polytechnic, the University of Turin and T-Lab, the Telecom Italia research centre but also the favourable geographical position.” G. Berretta, president and general director, Eutelsat

INNOVATION, RESEARCH, FUNDING AND RELI- ABLE TIMING: DRIVERS TO ATTRACT FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT IN PIEMONTE.

Piemonte is the fi rst and only region in Italy to have created and implemented an innovative tool, the Regional Investment Contract, that gives foreign companies locating in Piemonte guarantees in terms of fi nancial support and time scheduling for the investment and location project. The Regional Investment Contract aims to encourage the arrival and development in Piemonte of new investments from abroad in industry, services and research, to create synergies with the local fabric, and to favour the growth of opportunities for human resources in terms of employment and increase in knowledge, as well as collaboration in the development of positive externalities in the local areas.

“Your regional administration knows how to answer the needs of companies wanting to invest in Italy: the Regional Investment Contract that we have signed in is an excellent tool, so precious to convince us to invest in Biella more than we had planned”. Ahmet Abalioglu, General Manager, Filidea
