    CALL THE HANDS NHSA DIGITAL NEWSLETTER Issue No.13 October 2017 From the President The Naval Historical Society of Australia (NHSA) has grown over more than four decades from a small Garden Island, Sydney centric society in 1970 to an Australia wide organization with Chapters in Victoria, WA and the ACT and an international presence through the website and social media. Having recently established a FACEBOOK presence with a growing number of followers. Society volunteers have been busy in recent months enhancing the Society’s website. The new website will be launched in December 2017 at our AGM. At the same time, we plan to convert Call the Hands into digital newsletter format in lieu of this PDF format. This will provide advantage for readers and the Society. The most significant benefit of NHSA membership of the Society is receipt of our quarterly magazine, the Naval Historical Review which is add free, up to fifty pages in length and includes 8 to 10 previously unpublished stories on a variety of historical and contemporary subjects. Stories greater than two years old are made available to the community through our website. The membership form is available on the website. If more information is required on either membership or volunteering for the Society, please give us a call or e-mail us. Activities by our regular band of willing volunteers in the Boatshed, continue to be diverse, interesting and satisfying but we need new helpers as the range of IT and web based activities grows. Many of these can be done remotely. Other activities range from routine mail outs to guiding dockyard tours, responding to research queries, researching and writing stories.

    CALL THE HANDS NHSA DIGITAL NEWSLETTER Issue No.16 February 2018 From the President Welcome to our first edition of Call the Hands for 2018. Since December, the wreck of HMAS AE1 has been discovered, STS Young Endeavour celebrated 30 years of service and Society members have been involved in several interesting activities. In the week prior to Christmas the discovery of HMAS AE1, excited the nation and ended the Navy’s longest mystery. AE1 was lost off the island of Rabaul on 14 September 1914 with all 35 crew members. The wreck site will remain ‘close held’ by Find AE1 Expedition member organisations until appropriate measures are taken to protect the site. Expedition leader, retired Rear Admiral Peter Briggs who has worked much of his life to find HMAS AE1 and his colleagues are saluted for this historic achievement. On 16 January the Commanding Officer HMAS Hobart, Captain John Stavridis and Supply Officer, Lieutenant Commander Mark Lee visited the Boatshed to acquaint themselves with an important HMAS Hobart heritage item, the Captain’s table from HMAS Hobart (I). The Society has held the table in trust since Hobart (II) decommissioned in May 2000. Descendants of HMAS Patricia Cam crew members and the community marked the 76th anniversary of her loss with a series of events in Darwin, Gosford, Sydney and Canberra from 20 to 22 January. Patricia Cam sank on 22 January 1943 after being bombed by a Japanese float plane. Society members participated in the Gosford (plaque unveiling where she was built) and Canberra last post ceremony at the Australian War Memorial.

The force weighed and left Oosthaven at 4 p .m. on the 14th, and formed in two columns . The Dutch cruisers, led by De Ruyter, were to starboard ; and the British, led by Hobart as Senior Officer, to port . The six U.S. destroyers screened ahead ; and three Dutch astern. One of the four Dutch ships had bee n sent on ahead to mark Two Brothers Island off the south-east coast o f Sumatra, and join later. Air reconnaissance on the 13th had indicated four groups of enemy vessels : two cruisers, two destroyers, and two transports about sixty miles south of the Anambas Islands, steering south-west a t 10 a.m. ; one cruiser, three destroyers and eight transports some twenty miles to the eastward of the first group, and steering south at 10.30 a.m. ; three cruisers, five destroyers and one transport, about sixty miles nort h of Banka Island and steering west at 3 .30 p.m.; and two destroyers with fourteen transports about 100 miles north of Billiton island, and steerin g S.S.W., at 4.30 p.m. Doorman led his force northwards in accordance with the decision s reached by him and Helfrich—to go northwards through Gaspar Strait, round Banka, and back through Banka Strait, "destroying any enemy force s seen".

    OCCASIONAL PAPER 62 Call the Hands Issue No. 34 September 2019 The Navy in South Australia from Colonial Days to the Present By Dennis J Weatherall JP TM AFAITT(L) LSM Volunteer Researcher, Naval Historical Society of Australia It’s reputed that the first sighting of the southern coast of our Great South Land was by a Dutch ship in 1627 the “Gulden Zeepaard” under the command of a Francois Thijssen. The next record accords Rear Admiral Bruny D’Entrecasteaux in the French war ship “La Recherche”. He was looking for La Perouse who was on a voyage of discovery in 1788, in company with “Boussole” and “Astralabe”, both the latter seemingly disappearing without trace. Able Tasman probably saw the same coast even earlier in 1644 from his sketch charts. Another voyager was Lt. John McCluer of the Bombay Marine Company in 1790, followed by Captain Matthew Flinders in 1802-1803. A Lt. James Grant in January 1800, in command of “HMS Lady Nelson” (a 60 ton Brig), discovered and named parts of the coast such as Cape Banks, Cape Northumberland, Mount Gambier, Mount Schanck. He was promoted to Commander after a battle with the Dutch in 1805 off today’s Netherlands and he was remembered with a memorial atop Mt Gambier in 1900 for his discoveries. The Province of South Australia (as opposed to Colony)1 was established in December 1833 when the British Parliament passed the South Australian Act. South Australia was in fact called a “Province” rather than a Colony to distinguish it from other Colonies that had transportation as their main source of population.

    CALL THE HANDS NHSA NEWSLETTER Issue No. 4 December 2016 From the President Acceptance and the growing number of subscribers to Call The Hands is most encouraging as is the ready contribution of interesting stories from members. Thanks in this regard go to Tom de Voil and Peter Poland whose contributions on HMAS Melbourne III and lifting of the siege of Tobruk are featured in this edition. The Society achieved an important milestone on 2 November with re-establishment of the ACT Chapter of the Society. Members can read more about it in the December edition of the Buzz, the Society's quarterly newsletter. The well attended inaugural meeting which was also attended by many non members from like minded organisations in the 'Navy Family' elected a Committee of four; Simon Cullen, Tony Vickers, Kathryn Spurling and David Manolas. With this talented and experienced team steering the Chapter an interesting range of activities and opportunities is anticipated for members. In early November I was fortunate to visit Melbourne and meet with Victorian Chapter President, Rex Williams and the Bird Family at the Chapters new meeting place, the Glen Waverley RSL Club. Here it was a great pleasure to present George Bird with Honorary Life Membership of the Society. George has served on the Committee and as Treasurer for many years. More about George and his Service is in this edition. The Society's National AGM was conducted in Sydney on 22 November following the Victorian and Western Australian Chapter AGMs in recent weeks. A few changes to office bearers occurred with the key change at the National level being the retirement of David McFall and election of Geoffrey Barnes to the Committee.
