Finalists in the general categories of the 57th annual Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism were announced at simultaneous events in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane tonight. Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance federal secretary Christopher Warren said the high standard of 2012 Walkley Award entries showed the enduring value of quality journalism in a challenging period for the media industry. “This year’s Walkley Award entries show that despite the financial and regulatory pressures being placed on journalists and newsrooms, the demand for high-quality, independent journalism continues growing every year,” Mr Warren said. Finalists for the Business Award, the Nikon-Walkley Awards for Excellence in Photojournalism and the Documentary Award were announced earlier this week. The 2012 Walkley Awards attracted more than 1300 entries, with winners to be announced on November 30 at the Awards Presentation and Gala Dinner at Parliament House in Canberra, broadcast on SBS. A special Capital Edition of The Walkley Foundation’s annual media GOLD WALKLEY conference What’s the Story will be held at the National Film & Sound CATEGORY SPONSOR Archive in Canberra on November 29 & 30. Victorian and ACT Electoral Boundary Redistribution
Barton Deakin Brief: Victorian and ACT Electoral Boundary Redistribution 9 April 2018 Last week, the Australian Electoral Commission (‘AEC’) announced substantial redistributions for the Electorate Divisions in Victoria and the ACT. The redistribution creates a third Federal seat in the ACT and an additional seat in Victoria. These new seats are accompanied by substantial boundary changes in Victoria and the ACT. ABC electoral analyst Antony Green has predicted that the redistribution would notionally give the Australian Labor Party an additional three seats in the next election – the Divisions of Dunkley, Fraser, and Bean – while the seat of Corangamite would become one of the most marginal seats in the country. The proposed changes will now be subject to a consultation period where objections to the changes may be submitted to the AEC. The objection period closes at 6pm May 4 in both the ACT and Victoria. A proposed redistribution for South Australia will be announced on April 13. This Barton Deakin Brief will summarize the key electoral boundary changes in the ACT and Victoria. New Seats The Redistribution Committee has proposed that four of Victoria’s electoral divisions be renamed. Additionally, two new seats are to be created in Victoria and the ACT New Seats Proposed for Victoria and ACT DIVISION OF BEAN (ACT) New seat encompassing much of the former Division of Canberra. The seat will be named after World War I war correspondent Charles Edwin Woodrow Green (1879-1968) DIVISION OF FRASER (VIC) New seat named after former Liberal Party Prime Minister John Malcolm Fraser AC CH GCL (1930-2015), to be located in Melbourne’s western suburbs. -

An image taken by the ANHG editor at the NERAM Museum of Printing, Armidale, NSW, on 19 January 2020. NERAM is the New England Regional Art Museum. The Museum of Printing houses a historically significant collection of printing machinery and equipment, known as the F.T. Wimble & Co. Collection. It includes printing presses, a Linotype machine, a monotype, guillotines, book binding equipment, wooden and metal type and a history of printing in Australia from 1850 to the early 1900s. Wimble’s listed themselves as ink makers, type founders and printers’ furnishers. The Museum of Printing was officially opened on 23 April 2001 (see ANHG 12.37). The Kennedy Legacy and Australian Labor Law Reform LOUISE FLOYD* & MICHAEL EvAN GOLD** Introduction 1950s America was the stage for a grueling battle of wits between the Kennedy broth- ers, especially Robert Kennedy, and notorious union boss, Jimmy Hoffa.1 The related McClellan Senate Committee Inquiry unearthed appalling tales of union bullying and cor- ruption,2 and recommended substantial law reform aimed at making unions more repre- sentative of the plight of their worker-members, rather than enhancing the profile and financial well-being of union leaders.3 The result was the Labor-Management Reporting 4 & Disclosure Act or Landrum Griffin Act-which is still law in America today. Over fifty years later, a strikingly similar situation has arisen in Australia with the Royal Commission into Trade Union Corruption. This article considers both the U.S. and Aus- tralian positions on trade union law to argue how U.S. law might be adapted to improve Australian trade union governance. Sometimes it reforms the system, like Caro Meldrum-Hanna, Sam Clark and Max Murch’s Texpose of animal cruelty in the greyhound industry. Sometimes it puts money back in people’s pockets, like Fairfax’s 2016 investigation of a deal between the shop workers’ union and big retailers and fast-food companies. Sometimes it helps us understand the root causes of our problems, like the stories by Jess Hill on domestic violence that won the Gold in the inaugural Our Watch Awards in 2015. We value the little stories as well as the big ones. Hundreds of stories appear across Australia every day, in every medium, that all add up to informing the public about how our world works and who we are.
