LONDON UNDERGROUND RAILWAYS 1913-32 James Fowler The York Management School University of York [email protected] A rapid deterioration in British railways’ financial results around 1900 sparked an intense debate about how productivity might be improved. As a comparison it was noted that US railways were much more productive and employed far more detailed statistical accounting methods, though the connection between the two was disputed and the distinction between the managerial and regulatory role of US statistical collection was unexplored. Nevertheless, The Railway Companies (Accounts and Returns) Act was passed in 1911 and from 1913 a continuous, detailed and standardized set of data was produced by all rail companies including the London underground. However, this did not prevent their eventual amalgamation into the London Passenger Transport Board in 1933 on grounds of efficiency. This article finds that despite the hopes of the protagonists, collecting more detailed statistics did not improve productivity and suggests that their primary use was in generating publicity to influence shareholders’, passengers’ and workers’ perceptions.

  • Squatting – the Real Story
Squatters are usually portrayed as worthless scroungers hell-bent on disrupting society. Here at last is the inside story of the 250,000 people from all walks of life who have squatted in Britain over the past 12 years. The country is riddled with empty houses and there are thousands of homeless people. When squatters logically put the two together the result can be electrifying, amazing and occasionally disastrous. SQUATTING the real story is a unique and diverse account the real story of squatting. Written and produced by squatters, it covers all aspects of the subject: • The history of squatting • Famous squats • The politics of squatting • Squatting as a cultural challenge • The facts behind the myths • Squatting around the world and much, much more. Contains over 500 photographs plus illustrations, cartoons, poems, songs and 4 pages of posters and murals in colour. • CEDAW Opening Statement 19.6.2018
CEDAW Opening Statement Madam Chair, distinguished members of the Committee. Before I begin I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners on whose land we meet today and pay my respects to elders past and present. It is a great pleasure to meet with you today, to engage in a constructive dialogue about Australia’s implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women. Being here, I am humbled by the great Australian women who have come before me, trailblazers like feminist and activist, Jessie Street. 90 years ago Jessie Street came to this very building to advocate for Australian women’s economic independence as a key to their advancement: the right for women to divorce, women’s fair custody of their children, birth control for women, equal pay for women and equal inclusion of Aboriginal women in Australian society. She understood the power of working with women throughout the world. Among her many accomplishments, Jessie Street championed the creation of the Commission on the Status of Women as a permanent United Nations body to deal with women’s rights. We’re proud she did. Australia has continued its meaningful engagement in international fora. In particular, we demonstrate our commitment and leadership on gender equality at home and abroad. 1 CEDAW OPENING STATEMENT As a long-standing signatory to CEDAW, current member of the Human Rights Council, and member of the Commission on the Status of Women starting next year, Australia places great importance on meeting our obligations under the Convention, and our delegation will do our best to answer your questions today.

Courtesy National Library of Australia. Background and experience Jessie Lillingston came from a family of wealthy landowners in northern New South Wales. When she was a girl she loved horse riding but she did not like the fact that she was expected to ride side-saddle. So when nobody was looking, Jessie would swing her leg across the horse and ride the same way men did. All her life she behaved in ways that people from her background were not expected to behave. When she was a schoolgirl, Jessie met members of the suffragette movement in England and, on a visit to New York in 1915, she volunteered to help in a reception centre for young women arrested as prostitutes. In 1916, Jessie married Kenneth Street, who later became the highest judge in New South Wales. When he was knighted, she became Lady Jessie Street. • Ride side-saddle means to ride a horse with both feet on the same side of the horse.

WALKLEY AWARD FINALISTS ANNOUNCED THURSDAY, 18 OCTOBER 2012 From scoops to scandals, world events and previously untold stories – the Walkley Award finalists for 2012 demonstrate the ongoing strength and diversity of journalism in Australia. Finalists in the general categories of the 57th annual Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism were announced at simultaneous events in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane tonight. Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance federal secretary Christopher Warren said the high standard of 2012 Walkley Award entries showed the enduring value of quality journalism in a challenging period for the media industry. “This year’s Walkley Award entries show that despite the financial and regulatory pressures being placed on journalists and newsrooms, the demand for high-quality, independent journalism continues growing every year,” Mr Warren said. Finalists for the Business Award, the Nikon-Walkley Awards for Excellence in Photojournalism and the Documentary Award were announced earlier this week. The 2012 Walkley Awards attracted more than 1300 entries, with winners to be announced on November 30 at the Awards Presentation and Gala Dinner at Parliament House in Canberra, broadcast on SBS. A special Capital Edition of The Walkley Foundation’s annual media GOLD WALKLEY conference What’s the Story will be held at the National Film & Sound CATEGORY SPONSOR Archive in Canberra on November 29 & 30. The conference features the best line-up of local and international speakers for any media conference in Australia, including New York Times founding interactive news editor Aron Pilhofer, ABC Director of News Kate Torney and Canberra Times editor-at-large Jack Waterford.
