The approach emphasizes two cultural phenomena: how the indigenous peo ple related to the Conquistadors in forging a new society, as well as how im migration, particularly to Lima, has shaped contemporary Peru. This contribu tion also aims at providing a bibliographical resource to those who would like to conduct research on Peru.

ABSTRACT We give to know the finding of Gines de Carranza´s testament, a citizen of Malaga. The document has provided clues to trace the figure of Gines in America, specifically in the conquest of Peru, realized by Francisco Pizarro. Also, we have found out his family background and even the location of his final burial in a convent of Granada city.

  • Traveling in High Altitudes
Traveling in High Altitude Product of the Research & Information Support Center (RISC) The following is based on open-source reporting. Summary In mid-July, an experienced American mountaineer, athlete, and physician, Andy Zimet, was found dead alone on Lenin Peak (23,406 feet above sea level) in the Pamir Mountains of Kyrgyzstan. With no discernable trauma or evidence of foul play, authorities believe he died of altitude sickness. “High altitude" generally describes locations 8,000 feet above sea level and higher; however, altitude sickness can impact anyone traveling from one altitude to a notably higher one. Awareness is necessary because at this elevation oxygen levels are lower and can cause difficulties for travelers. As you increase in altitude, there is less oxygen and water in the air. Many higher-altitude tourist destinations, particularly those for trekking and adventure sports, are remote and may lack access to medical care. What is Altitude Sickness? According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), altitude sickness (also called Acute Mountain Sickness or AMS) is often compared to an alcohol hangover with accompanying headache, tiredness, lack of appetite, nausea, and vomiting. Usually, symptoms tend to appear 2-3 days after arrival at high altitude destinations. Mild cases can often be treated with over-the-counter painkillers or anti- inflammatories. However, severe, albeit rare, reactions include the swelling of the brain (high-altitude cerebral edema) and lungs (high-altitude pulmonary edema), for which a person should descend to a lower altitude immediately. Descent is the primary treatment for most altitude sickness. Where is it? Although travel to destinations above 8,000 feet (approx.

Written in very lucid prose, the book is also a broad history of Peru in the first half of the 20th century seen through the lens of technology and modernity. In the first chapter, Hiatt describes how aviation arrived in Peru thanks to the efforts of Jorge Chávez, who was born in Paris. In the decades after the triumph of Chile in the War of the Pacific, many Peruvians searched for a way to improve the future of the country and, in a sense, aviation fulfilled this longed-for goal. Chávez was winning competitions in Europe, and although he died soon after a flight from Cuzco to Puno in 1910, many thought of him as a “source of authenticity and vitality” (p. 24) for Peru. Although the initial drive toward a culture of aviation came from the Lima elite, Hiatt demonstrates that other social classes also celebrated aviation, as happened with the huge welcome accorded the pilot Juan Bielovucic when his ship docked in Callao in 1911. However, with Bielovucic’s crash in April 1911, aviation in Peru declined. For example, it became difficult for the Peruvian Aviation League (Liga Peru- ana Pro Aviación) to maintain its discourse since there were no “airplanes, spare parts, or flight instructors” (p.

The Tacana have a long tradition of exchange with highland communities. Though facing rapid acculturation, highlighted by the loss of the Tacana language among the younger generations, the lcnowledge and uses of medicinal plants are still alive. Of the approximately 450 different plant species collected during this survey, 33% had medicinal uses. We present an overview of the traditional Tacana ethnomedicine and pharmacopoeia.
