Native American Proverb Newsletter of Rotary Club of Miramar - July 2020 Volume 05 | Issue 01 - Native American Proverb ne day in the fall of 1900, Paul P. Harris met attorney Bob Frank for dinner in a well-off neighborhood on the North Side of Chicago. They took a walk around the area and stopped at shops along the way. Harris O was impressed by how Frank had made friends with many of the shopkeepers. Since moving to Chicago to set up his law practice, Harris had not encountered the kind of camaraderie that Frank enjoyed with his fellow businessmen. He wondered whether there was a way to channel and expand this type of fellowship, which reminded him of the New England town where he'd grown up. The thought persisted that “ I was experiencing only what had happened to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of others in the great city … I was sure that there must be many other young men who had come from farms and small villages to establish themselves in Chicago ... Why not bring them together? If others were longing for fellowship as I was, something would come of it” -- Paul P. Harris, My Road to Rotary Eventually, Harris persuaded other local businessmen to meet and discuss forming a club for commercial trade, community, and fellowship... and on 23 February 1905, they held what would later become known as the first Rotary club meeting. His vision laid the foundation for the Rotary of today. In February 1907, Harris was elected the third president of the Rotary Club of Chicago. Toward the end of his presidency, he worked to expand Rotary beyond the city. ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT RTN. "Let the beauty of Nature remind you, the Goodness of God" OnOurMind Message from the President My dear Club Members , Anns, Annettes and fellow Rotarians, I am happy that our first edition of Manthan which is totally revamped painstakingly crafted by our own Editor Rtn Samrat is being presented to you today. I did not realise, how the time flew.It is already a month after I took over as the President on the auspicious occasion of Ashadhi Ekasdashi, 1st of July with blessings and good wishes from all of you. It is indeed a humbling experience. In the past one month, our TEAM did coordinate various meetings, projects, club assemblies, planning of future activities, etc. The support was awesome. Aptly, the theme given by Rotary International for the month of July was “Leadership Change”. Rotary being an International Service Organisation, brings together business and professional leaders to provide, humanitarian service, and advance goodwill and peace, around the world. However to bring these values into practice, we have to first start with our own self and then spread it to our surroundings through our family, friends and members. This, can be achieved only and only through self-introspection and combined efforts. I am happy to inform you all that it was only because of this teamwork, that we managed to click about 11 project activities besides 3 weekly meetings ,1 club assembly and one BOD meeting. It was also a far vision, sheer grit and determination of our PR chairperson Rtn. Natasha, who was ably supported with creative ideas and quick action on part of our Joint Secretary Rtn.Sagar which enabled us to have our presence felt through our projects and activities on various social media platforms at national and international level. I am thankful to each one of you for the time, support and suggestions given on various occasions in these challenging times of Covid 19 pandemic that we could achieve something in the past month. With your continued support we hope to do much more in the coming months in fulfilling the objectives of Rotary. Stay home stay safe. Rtn. Kamlesh Amlani (President) Message from the Secretary It gives me immense pleasure to write a few words for our monthly bulletin "The Manthan", when along with my President we took the Oath of Office on 1st July virtually though, I felt accomplished. I am very happy to be a part of this family and I am touched by the love that has been bestowed on my family by the Rotarians after my relocation to Goa. I will try my best in the capacity of a Secretary to take it to greater heights. We began our tenure in right earnest by couple of Tree plantation Drives, thus ‘Supporting Our Environment’, our seventh area of focus. The two Blood Donation Camps in the month received big support. The felicitation of CAs and Covid warrior doctors was well appreciated. We are going through difficult times of Covid-19 and meeting personally is difficult in these times. We need to be innovative in creating a virtual platform for our meetings and I am sure this time will also pass by in the next few months. The mantra for now and always will be "When the going gets tough, the tough get going". Rtn. Noel Britto (Secretary) From the Club Editor’s Desk We are entering a New Year of the Rotary Calendar, it brings me great pride and joy for completing five successful years of our Club from a new born toddler to grown up child with lots of enthusiasm and energy. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our earlier Editors for “Manthan” for creating a benchmark and their excellent work in showcasing our Club Achievement and Growth. This year we will try and make every effort to highlight and focus on important social issues as well as topics related to animals and the environment, which are also very close to my heart. An example of the above, featuring in this edition, is the 1st social issue, I have touched upon; Depression which is the most common issue today in our society which people shy. Our focus will also be on informative articles representing Goa’s beautiful culture, food and places of relevance to all Rotarians and readers across India & abroad to make our editions more interesting. Your feedback is always welcome for making the editions better as we go ahead. Let’s all together with our little efforts make this world a better place. Rtn. This argument commences from the postulate that the recognition of Konkani in the Devanagari script as the official language of Goa, determined the boundaries of the state’s civil society.Through an ethnographic study of the contestations around the demand that the Roman script also be officially recognised, the thesis demonstrates how by deliberately excluding the Roman script for the language, the largely lower-caste and lower-class Catholic users of the script were denoted as less than authentic members of the legitimate civil society of the state.
