Bibliography •297' _ 309 * * * PREFACE This Thesis is my earnest and indepth en- deavour to explore and present the hidden facts on the life, work and achievements of Dayanand Balkrishna Bandodkar who was the first Chief Minister of Goa, Daman & Diu for ten years and who made great contribu- tion to the development of Goa and the welfare and upliftment of its people in general, the poor and the downtrodden in particular, socially, economically, emotionally, intellectually, educationally and cultu- rally on par with the rest of India. Bandodkar was acknowledged as a man of the masses. Though born in modest family background he became one of the richest men of Goa and the mostpopular leader among the people. Bandodkar was a great philanthropist and a real friend of the people. His visionary efforts at the cost of his own wealth and health brought wide appreciation and inspiration in the littoral land of Goa - the land of fish, feasts, festivals, fairs and fun. He was a leader of national standing whose virtues of goodness, philanthropy, compassion and sympathy for his fellowmen are legandary. Sailing against a host it of problems - social and economic - left behind by the outgoing Portuguese rule, Bandodkar made innovative changes in every field of human activity in Goa. He laid the sound foundation for the various amenities and facilities of modern Goa. So far, no indepth and analytical study has been undertaken on the contribution of Bandodkar for Goa's development after its liberation in 1961 although his tenure as the Chief Minister was the most eventful one in the democratic history of Goa. From the few booklets published on Bandodkar and my personal interviews with his contemporaries and others, it became clear that his life, work and achievements are of great significance and revolutionary in nature. And that has prompted me to choose the topic "DAYANAND BALKRISHNA BANDODKAR : THE ARCHITECT OF MODERN GOAn. In the absence of many published books or documents, I made sincere efforts to go through the original source materials that were available in some Libraries, Govt. offices and other agencies and also interviewed Bandodkar's own daughter, Smt. 111 Shashikala- Kakodkar, who was the Chief Minister of Goa, Daman & Diu after his death, besides several other persons from different walks of life. The few booklets, the Navhind Times newspaper, some publications available with Govt. departments and my personal interviews with various people engaged in business, social work, sports, politics, Govt. service, journalism, etc. were the main sources of information for this work. The whole Thesis is divided into five chapters as follows, besides a Conclusion: 1. Birth and Childhood 2. A Lover of Nature and Sports 3. A Philanthropist and Man of the Masses 4. Bandodkar's Contribution as Chief Minister - Part I 5. Bandodkar's Contribution as Chief Minister - Part II Besides these chapters, also included in the Thesis are some Appendices. In addition, map, illustrations and photographs covering the various facets of his life are also included at appropriate places in order to enhance the quality iv of the research work. The Thesis ends with a detailed Bibliography. I take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to all those who helped me in my work. RADHAKRISHNAN Chapter I BIRTH AND CHILDHOOD Dayanand Balkrishna Bandodkar was born on 12th March 1911 in a small house of his maternal uncle at Kotkarwada, now known as Maoswadda, in Pernem taluka of North Goa. He was a charming and graceful child at birth who became the most popular leader in his life- time in free Goa's history and whom the people affectiona- tely called by many names as 'Gomantakache Suputhr', 'Gomantakache Sinn', 'Danshoor Dayanand', 'Amche Bhaul, 'Goa's Man of Destiny', 'Man of the people', 'Bhau Saheb', 'Ajeeb Lokanche Raja', etc. Perhaps no one in this land was fortunate to be called in so many names as Dayanand Bandodkar was, all due to his high humane qualities with which he ruled Goa, Daman & Diu as the first Chief Minister for nine years, seven months and twenty two 1 days continuously till his death. Dayanand Bandodkar was born in a poor family 2 background. 'The house in which he was born was of thatcned roof, mud walls, mud floor and stood evident of the modest economic background of his maternal family. It is now occupied by his relatives who have made some 2 3 additions to it. They feel proud while speaking about Bandodkar who was born in that house and who became the first Chief Minister of Goa, Daman & Diu after 4 its liberation from the colonial rule. It is said that the birth of Dayanand Bandodkar was not an ordinary 5 event as can be observed from his horoscope. The birthtime and the combination of the stars indicated that the person would achieve higher positions in life. Dayanand Bandodkar's family was a migrated 6 one. Their family Goddess is the famous 'Bhavani' ? of Tuljapur in Maharashtra. Dayanand Bandodkar once narrated how the family came from Tuljapur and settled down in Bandiwade in Goa where a portion of the land is known as Bokadwag where they lived. Commercial interest of his father Balkrishna Bandodkar prompted 8 them later to shift to Mapusa in North Goa.

Many interpreters of the phenomenon, which is found at its strongest among the Marathas and the occupational castes related to or influenced by them, and less strongly among the primitive tribes of the. region, have characterized it as a form of totemism. A few interpreters, however, have called the totemic" character of the devak into question.     GK Digest November 2016 International Affairs Pakistan postpones SAARC summit Pakistan has officially postponed the 19th SAARC Summit to be held in November in Islamabad.     First Convocation of Symbiosis Skills and Professional University Symbiosis Skills and Professional University conducted the first convocation of the batch of students of 2017 on Saturday 6th February 2021. Hon’ble Chancellor Dr. S.B. Mujumdar presided over the event in the presence of Pro Chancellor Dr. Swati Mujumdar, Vice Chancellor Dr. Ashwini Kumar Sharma, Registrar Mr. B. B. Patil and COE Mr. Pramod Bhadakwade. The chief guest for the Convocation program was Shri. Subhash Desai Ji, Hon’ble Minister for Industries, Mining and Marathi Language, Government of Maharashtra. Shri. Ravi Gogia Ji, Fiat India Automobiles Pvt. Ltd. was the Guest of Honor. The convocation had 171 students of BBA Management and B.Sc. Beauty and Wellness graduating. The Chancellor’s Gold Medal was awarded to toppers of each program. Topper in BBA Retail: Ms. Shipra Jain, Topper in BBA Logistics and Supply Chain Management: Mr. Bahul Chandwani, Topper in BBA Port and Terminal Management: Mr. Neeraj Gadkari and Topper in B.Sc. Beauty and Wellness: Ms. Jasmine Sinha. All graduating students received their Degree Certificates from Pro. Chancellor Dr. Swati Mujumdar and Vice Chancellor Dr. Ashwini Kumar Sharma. The event was attended by members of Governing Body, Board of Management, Academic Council, Special Guests and members of media. The event was conducted following the safety norms of Social Distancing. SSPU: A Shooting Destination Visit of Mangeshkar Family to SSPU Symbiosis Skills and Professional Ms. Usha Tai Mangheshkar ji daughter of Pandit Shri. University campus is steadily establishing Deenanath Mangeshkar and Ms Shevanti (Shudhamati) and the as a shooting destination for the films and youngest sister among Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and web series.

    Political Economy of a Dominant Caste

    Draft Political Economy of a Dominant Caste Rajeshwari Deshpande and Suhas Palshikar* This paper is an attempt to investigate the multiple crises facing the Maratha community of Maharashtra. A dominant, intermediate peasantry caste that assumed control of the state’s political apparatus in the fifties, the Marathas ordinarily resided politically within the Congress fold and thus facilitated the continued domination of the Congress party within the state. However, Maratha politics has been in flux over the past two decades or so. At the formal level, this dominant community has somehow managed to retain power in the electoral arena (Palshikar- Birmal, 2003)—though it may be about to lose it. And yet, at the more intricate levels of political competition, the long surviving, complex patterns of Maratha dominance stand challenged in several ways. One, the challenge is of loss of Maratha hegemony and consequent loss of leadership of the non-Maratha backward communities, the OBCs. The other challenge pertains to the inability of different factions of Marathas to negotiate peace and ensure their combined domination through power sharing. And the third was the internal crisis of disconnect between political elite and the Maratha community which further contribute to the loss of hegemony. Various consequences emerged from these crises. One was simply the dispersal of the Maratha elite across different parties. The other was the increased competitiveness of politics in the state and the decline of not only the Congress system, but of the Congress party in Maharashtra. The third was a growing chasm within the community between the neo-rich and the newly impoverished.
