Italian Films (Updated April 2011)
Language Laboratory Film Collection Wagner College: Campus Hall 202 Italian Films (updated April 2011): Agata and the Storm/ Agata e la tempesta (2004) Silvio Soldini. Italy The pleasant life of middle-aged Agata (Licia Maglietta) -- owner of the most popular bookstore in town -- is turned topsy-turvy when she begins an uncertain affair with a man 13 years her junior (Claudio Santamaria). Meanwhile, life is equally turbulent for her brother, Gustavo (Emilio Solfrizzi), who discovers he was adopted and sets off to find his biological brother (Giuseppe Battiston) -- a married traveling salesman with a roving eye. Bicycle Thieves/ Ladri di biciclette (1948) Vittorio De Sica. Italy Widely considered a landmark Italian film, Vittorio De Sica's tale of a man who relies on his bicycle to do his job during Rome's post-World War II depression earned a special Oscar for its devastating power. The same day Antonio (Lamberto Maggiorani) gets his vehicle back from the pawnshop, someone steals it, prompting him to search the city in vain with his young son, Bruno (Enzo Staiola). Increasingly, he confronts a looming desperation. Big Deal on Madonna Street/ I soliti ignoti (1958) Mario Monicelli. Italy Director Mario Monicelli delivers this deft satire of the classic caper film Rififi, introducing a bungling group of amateurs -- including an ex-jockey (Carlo Pisacane), a former boxer (Vittorio Gassman) and an out-of-work photographer (Marcello Mastroianni). The crew plans a seemingly simple heist with a retired burglar (Totó), who serves as a consultant. But this Italian job is doomed from the start. Blow up (1966) Michelangelo Antonioni. -

Page 1 of 19 Dear Chinese and European Friends Alike
Page 1 of 19 Dear Chinese and European friends alike, After the great success of the first two European Union Film Festivals in China, it is my great pleasure to welcome you again to the third European Union Film Festival in China. And this year the festival will be even bigger and better than ever as we are expanding to yet another city: Xi'an. Our motto in the EU is "United in Diversity", and this festival is a wonderful example of hard work and cooperation among all our 27 Member States, providing a unique opportunity for a Chinese audience to experience the most recent, most successful and most exciting films the European Union has to offer. European cinema is like a Chinese banquet: many dishes with distinct flavours and colours to please every palate. I hope that you will like the delicious menu we will serve up for you this time, not on a silver platter but on the magical silver screen! Serge Abou EU Ambassador to China 赛日· 安博 欧盟驻华大使 *** Dear friends, In many countries, any non-local and non-Hollywood movie was automatically classified as "arthouse". Until not so long ago Chinese movies in Europe would be shown mainly in festivals and independant cinemas. Yet you all know that chinese movies can be as gripping, as entertaining, spectacular and intense as anything produced elsewhere on the Pacific coast, while retaining their own identity. Nowadays many chinese movies attract huge crowds in Europe. -
Benito Mussolini Ve Clara Petacci

Maniacs and Perverts: Dictators Also Between the Sheets
FROM MUSSOLINI TO STALIN Maniacs and perverts: dictators also between the sheets CULTURE 24-06-2021 Francesco Agnoli The private lives of great historical figures, particularly the dictators of the 20th century, are attracting increasing interest. Every inch of their lives has been investigated, in terms of their thinking, their political choices, etc., and they have also been the subject of much debate. For some time now, investigations into the private and emotional lives of Mussolini and Hitler in particular have also enjoyed considerable success (Stalin, on the other hand, has been less 'lucky'). Mussolini the “womaniser” Italy was marked for many years by the political activity of Benito Mussolini, first a Socialist leader, acclaimed on the left for his anticlericalism and revolutionary zeal, and then a Fascist. Mussolini's love life is fairly well known: as a young man he was a theorist of “free love”, opposed to marriage and children (he translated a neo-Malthusian pamphlet entitled Meno figli, meno schiavi, “Fewer Children, Fewer Slaves”), close to left-wing feminism. Before he became Il Duce, he frequented brothels, managed even 3 or 4 relationships at the same time, disregarding the children that were born from them: they were destined for the madhouse, as in the case of the son he had by Ida Dalser, abandonment, or even abortion, as in the case of one of the two children he had by the very young Bianca Ceccato, his personal secretary at Popolo d'Italia. Historians such as Mimmo Franzinelli, author of Il duce e le donne. Avventure e passioni extraconiugali di Mussolini, “Il Duce and Women. -
The Myth of the Political Physicality of Mussolini In
109 THE BODY OF IL DUCE: THE MYTH OF THE POLITICAL PHYSICALITY OF MUSSOLINI IN MARCO BELLOCCHIO’S VINCERE Marco Luceri (University of Florence) Stare sul corpo significa cercare un’intensità che si valorizza nel rimanere lì più a lungo possibile. — Marco Bellocchio 1. REMARKS ON THE BODY AND ON ACTING IN MARCO BELLOCCHIO’S CINEMA Marco Bellocchio’s cinema is a cinema of the body. The characters in his films not only break the rules to which their bodies are subjected to, they also use their body as a means to express their agonizing emotions and as a way to undermine the presumed harmony of narration. The actors’ bodies have a problematic relationship with space, time, sounds, movements and images;1 they are bodies that are trapped in pauses, contractions, and in interior and exterior conflicts. In short, Bellocchio’s cinema is inhabited by interpreters whose physical potentialities are exalted almost to the limit, ready to become witnesses of a discomfort which is often irreconcilable with reality. One could call it a cinema in which the body, which has its own autonomous dimension, breaks down the mechanism of mimesis that is at the basis of the relationship between actor and character. Bellocchio devotes a great part of Cinema 3 ARTICLES | ARTIGOS Luceri 110 his poetic and stylistic work to the uncontrollable and irreducible force of the body because it enables him to bring forward the most obscure and hidden nature of the human soul. If actor and character belong to the narrative dimension of the film, then the body, as third element, becomes the vehicle of the visible which bears witness to that “suspension of meaning”2 that characterizes the entire filmography of Bellocchio. -
