Three Leading Italian Film-Makers Have Been Invited by the Museum of Modern Art
m The Museum of Modern Art No. 50 FOR RELEASE: U West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 245-3200 Cable: Modernart Tuesday, April 8, I969 Three leading Italian film-makers have been invited by The Museum of Modern Art to address the American public, Willard Van Dyke, Director of the Department of Film, announced today. The directors are Bernardo Bertolucci, who will appear, 8:00 p.m., April 8th; Cesare Zavattini, scheduled to speak on May I3; and Marco Bellocchio, who will talk on June 10; specially chosen motion pictures will accompany the talks held in cooperation with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura. Programs start at 8:00 p.m. in the Museum Auditorium. The evening with Bernardo Bertolucci will include a preview of his most recent feature, "Partner" inspired by Dostoevski's "The Double." The picture, described by Bertolucci as "the story of a man who meets his own double," stars Pierre Clementi, who played the vile, sold-toothed anti-hero in "Belle de Jour." Bertolucci, a poet, at 22 made his second feature film "Before the Revolution," which received critical acclaim and created controversy. One critic, Roger Greenspun, wrote -- "the film draws directly upon Stendhal's 'Charter House of Parma;' in its mood and tone it draws perhaps as significantly upon Flaubert's 'Sentimental Education.' But in its meaning and in its particular kind of appreciation of all the life it observes, the picture stands by itself drawing essentially upon the sensibility and gift for under standing of the man who made it." The title, "Before the Revolution," derives from Talleyrand -- "only those who lived before the revolution knew how sweet life can be." The theme, reputedly auto biographical, deals with a young man's search to find his own values and discard the established ones of his respectable milieu. -

Music and History in Italian Film Melodrama, 1940-2010
Between Soundtrack and Performance: Music and History in Italian Film Melodrama, 1940-2010 By Marina Romani A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Italian Studies and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Barbara Spackman, Chair Professor Mary Ann Smart Professor Linda Williams Professor Mia Fuller Summer 2015 Abstract Between Soundtrack and Performance: Music and History in Italian Film Melodrama, 1940-2010 by Marina Romani Doctor of Philosophy in Italian Studies and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Barbara Spackman, Chair Melodrama manifests itself in a variety of forms – as a film and theatre practice, as a discursive category, as a mode of imagination. This dissertation discusses film melodrama in its visual, gestural, and aural manifestations. My focus is on the persistence of melodrama and the traces it leaves on post-World War II Italian cinema: from the Neorealist canon of the 1940s to works that engage with the psychological and physical, private, and collective traumas after the experience of a totalitarian regime (Cavani’s Il portiere di notte, 1974), to postmodern Viscontian experiments set in a 21st-century capitalist society (Guadagnino’s Io sono l’amore, 2009). The aural dimension is fundamental as an opening to the epistemology of each film. I pay particular attention to the presence of operatic music – as evoked directly or through semiotic displacement involving the film’s aesthetic and expressive figures – and I acknowledge the existence of a long legacy of practical and imaginative influences, infiltrations and borrowings between the screen and the operatic stage in the Italian cinematographic tradition. -

Milan and the Memory of Piazza Fontana Elena Caoduro Terrorism
Performing Reconciliation: Milan and the Memory of Piazza Fontana Elena Caoduro Terrorism was arguably the greatest challenge faced by Western Europe in the 1970s with the whole continent shaken by old resentments which turned into violent revolt: Corsican separatists in France, German speaking minorities in Italy’s South Tyrol, and Flemish nationalists in Belgium. Throughout that decade more problematic situations escalated in the Basque Provinces and Northern Ireland, where ETA and the Provisional IRA, as well as the Loyalist paramilitary groups (such as the UVF, and UDA) participated in long armed campaigns. According to Tony Judt, two countries in particular, West Germany and Italy, witnessed a different violent wave, as the radical ideas of 1968 did not harmlessly dissipate, but turned into a ‘psychosis of self- justifying aggression’ (2007, p. 469). In Italy, the period between 1969 and 1983, where political terrorism reached its most violent peak, is often defined as anni di piombo, ‘the years of lead’. This idiomatic expression derives from the Italian title given to Margarethe Von Trotta’s Die bleierne Zeit (1981, W. Ger, 106 mins.), also known in the UK as The German Sisters and in the USA as Marianne and Juliane.1 Following the film’s Golden Lion award at the 1981 Venice Film Festival, the catchy phrase ‘years of lead’ entered common language, and is now accepted as a unifying term for the various terrorist phenomena occurred in the long 1970s, both in Italy and West Germany. By the mid 1980s, however, terrorism had begun to decline in Italy. Although isolated episodes of left-wing violence continued to occur – two governmental consultants were murdered in 1999 and in 2002 respectively – special laws and the reorganisation of anti-terrorist police forces enabled its eradication, as did the 1 collaboration of many former radical militants. -

Characterising the Anthropocene: Ecological Degradation in Italian Twenty-First Century Literary Writing
Characterising the Anthropocene: Ecological Degradation in Italian Twenty-First Century Literary Writing by Alessandro Macilenti A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Italian Literature. Victoria University of Wellington 2015 Abstract The twenty-first century has witnessed the exacerbation of ecological issues that began to manifest themselves in the mid-twentieth century. It has become increasingly clear that the current environmental crisis poses an unprecedented existential threat to civilization as well as to Homo sapiens itself. Whereas the physical and social sciences have been defining the now inevitable transition to a different (and more inhospitable) Earth, the humanities have yet to assert their role as a transformative force within the context of global environmental change. Turning abstract issues into narrative form, literary writing can increase awareness of environmental issues as well as have a deep emotive influence on its readership. To showcase this type of writing as well as the methodological frameworks that best highlights the social and ethical relevance of such texts alongside their literary value, I have selected the following twenty-first century Italian literary works: Roberto Saviano’s Gomorra, Kai Zen’s Delta blues, Wu Ming’s Previsioni del tempo, Simona Vinci’s Rovina, Giancarlo di Cataldo’s Fuoco!, Laura Pugno’s Sirene, and Alessandra Montrucchio’s E poi la sete, all published between 2006 and 2011. The main goal of this study is to demonstrate how these works offer an invaluable opportunity to communicate meaningfully and accessibly the discomforting truths of global environmental change, including ecomafia, waste trafficking, illegal building, arson, ozone depletion, global warming and the dysfunctional relationship between humanity and the biosphere. -
