Study Guide

Ball Handling: 1. The ball handling drills can be done one or two ball stationary and moving. 2. Types of ball handling drills: pops(slap the ball), fingertips, body circles, figure eight, inside out, kill dribbles, between the leg, behind the back, hesitate, speed dribble, cross- over dribble, spider, and flip flop.

Passing: -There are four types of passing 1. Chest pass 2. Bounce pass 3. Two-hand overhead pass 4. Baseball pass

Catching: 1. Step out toward the ball when receiving it 2. Catch the ball with both hands, grasping it with fingers. Always show target hands. 3. Pull ball into the chest 4. Keep eyes focused on the ball

Lay-up:

1. Approach the basket at a 45-degree angle. 2. For right hand lay-ups, push off with left foot, drive right leg up, and shoot with right hand. 3. For left hand lay-ups, push off with the right foot, drive left leg up, and shoot with left hand.

Defensive Guarding and Rebounding:

Guarding: 1. The primary purpose of guarding is to keep the opponent from scoring. 2. The cardinal rule of guarding is to stay between the person being guarded and the basket. 3. The proper defensive stance is a forward back-stride position (knees slightly flexed, on the balls of your feet, sitting position, arms out, palms up). 4. Once an opponent is moving, the defensive guard must move also to maintain the position between the opponent and the basket. 5. The defensive guard is moving continuously. 6. Focus on the opponent’s waist 7. Keep cushion between you and the opponent and do not cross feet. Use a shuffle step

Rebounding: 1. Keep the body in a low crouched position 2. Distribute weight on the balls of the feet 3. Extend arms above the head 4. Extend legs for a wide base support 5. Take a wide stance with arms out and feet apart, and face the basket to your opponent from getting the 6. Box out opponents by pivoting in front of them, blocking their path to the ball 7. Pull down the ball with both hands

Basketball rules and terms: 1. A team consists of 5 players on the court at one time ( 1- guard, 2-wing, 3-wing, 4-forward, 5-center) 2. A regulation game consists of four eight minute quarters 3. A double bonus free throw is when the person fouled is given two free throws. 12. Five personal fouls on any one player result in disqualification from the game. 13. Three Seconds: is a violation when a offensive player stays in the offensive area for three seconds or more while his/her team has possession of the ball.
