Introduction

This thesaurus of terminology is intended to construct a controlled vocabulary that will provide those who have an interest in the sport, yet are relatively new to and unfamiliar with its intricacies, with a basic understanding of its fundamental aspects. The scope of this thesaurus is to cover the subject of ice hockey as it is currently played in the National Hockey

League and, with that in mind, the terms that make up its vocabulary were chosen in the compiler’s attempt to assemble the most commonly encountered rules, regulations, plays, and other terms that may occur during an NHL regulated game and as they are defined in associated rulebooks.

User’s Guide

This ice hockey vocabulary used in this thesaurus has been divided into a hierarchy consisting of seven principal categories: Equipment, Officials, Play, Players, Penalties,

Regulation, and Rink. A term’s position relative to those around it in the hierarchical structure is denoted by the number of hyphens that precede and indent it (e.g., the term “Goalie Mask” is preceded by three hyphens, which makes it a third level term falling under the second level term

Equipment”) and by the Broader Terms (BT) and Narrower Terms (NT) listed under a term’s entry in the alphabetical list. The headings of non-preferred terms are displayed in italics and list their respective preferred terms, which have boldfaced headings and should be used instead. Some terms are accompanied by illustrations that appear directly above their headings and can the user’s understanding of particular concepts by providing visual representations.

To further aid in the comprehension of the concepts described, the user should refer to the

Related Terms (RT) that are listed for an entry, as they can elaborate on how individual aspects

Champion 3

of ice hockey may interact.

Terminology

SN (Scope Note): Provides a definition for the entry term or specifies a restriction for the term’s

BT (Broader Term): Designates terms that have a more general meaning than the entry term and

that are placed above that term in the hierarchy.

NT (Narrower Term): Designates terms that a more specific meaning relative to the entry term

and that are placed below that term in the hierarchy.

directly linked to that term in the hierarchy.
