Dear Rally family, dear friends, Welcome to issue six of the FIA Rally Newsletter, which we are pleased to send out following last week’s online meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council on October 9, 2020. Inside are details of the new eighth and final round of this year’s FIA World Rally Championship, the planned calendar for the 2021 WRC, plus an update on some of the recent regulation changes. From a Regional Rally perspective, we are happy that the FIA Middle East Rally Championship title will be awarded in 2020 following a change to the points-scoring system. We are also humbled by the efforts of the Rally of Lebanon organisers to keep moving ahead with their event in November, despite the devastating explosion in Beirut in August and the suffering and disruption that it has caused. Continuing the Regional Rally theme, we are enthused by the progress of Rally3 with the first car, a Ford Fiesta Rally3 from M-Sport Poland, coming to life during a summer of test and development. An update on the work undertaken by the Rally Safety Task Force and how it helped with the successful running of three events in Croatia, San Marino and Portugal can be found in this edition. Everyone in the Rally Department is very proud that the Sporting Regulations for FIA Rally Star have been approved with momentum really building up following the publication of a detailed set of guidelines to help ASNs around the world organise the initial talent detection events. FIA Rally Star will help to uncover and nurture future world champions by encouraging mass participation in the sport at grassroots level. -

With new World Rally Championship (WRC) regulations, it was a challenging 12 months that provided some of the most thrilling competition of the modern era. Our new car, the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC, was a winning package on every surface and kept audiences transfixed on a championship battle that went all the way to the penultimate round… In 2017, we also branched out with our Customer Racing initiatives and welcomed a new circuit racer to our car line- up. The i30 N TCR joined the New Generation i20 R5 rally offering as part of our expanding customer activities. All this, and much more, is explored within these covers. While experienced Tidemand is aiming to score his fifth 2017 victory in WRC 2 category, youngsters Veiby and Nordgren want to demonstrate their skills behind the steering wheel of the works ŠKODA FABIA R5. “After Monte Carlo Rally for the second time in 2017 we are running three works teams in a round of the World Rally Championship. Having prematurely won the WRC 2 Championship with Pontus Tidemand and Jonas Andersson, also having secured the FIA WRC 2 Championship for Teams, I am really looking forward to the performance of our three teams,” explains ŠKODA Motorsport boss Michal Hrabánek. Sébastien Loeb på väg till toppen i Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak! Den niofaldiga rallyvärldsmästaren Sébastien Loeb ställs nu inför sin nästa stora utmaning, när han i samarbete med Peugeot Sport deltar i Pikes Peak International Hill Climb den 30 juni, i en specialdesignad Peugeot 208 T16. Det legendariska loppet i Pikes Peak i Colorado är världens högst belägna lopp och det är första gången det franska teamet återvänder till detta klassiska lopp sedan de historiska segrarna 1988 och 1989. Ari Vatanens seger i en 405 T16 1989 har senare hyllats i den prisbelönta filmen ”Climb Dance”, där han visar prov på sin dödsföraktande stil på vägen uppför berget. Pikes Peak: ett legendariskt lopp Pikes Peak International Race är det näst äldsta amerikanska motorloppet och startade redan 1916. Idag deltar mer än 150 förare i loppet som även kallas ”Race to the Clouds”. Starten går på 2 865 meter höjd och under den 20 km långa sträckan är det inte mindre än 156 hisnande kurvor som ska klaras av innan vinnaren når toppen på 4 301 meter. Under åren har sträckan gradvis asfalterats och 2012 genomfördes det första loppet helt på asfalt. Det ledde till ett nytt världsrekord genom Rhys Millen (Hyundai Genesis Coupé) på tiden 9’46’’164, det vill säga dubbelt så snabbt som när loppet gick av stapeln 1916! Loppet består av 20 klasser och innefattar förutom bilar även motorcyklar och tyngre lastbilar. Sébastien Loebs 208 T16 Pikes Peak deltar i kategorin ”Unlimited”. It’s a huge shame that the recent warm weather has conspired to take the edge off what has to be one of the biggest sporting spectacles of the season: World Rally Cars dancing on ice. The World Rally Championship is full of stop-you-in-your-tracks moments and the sight of a World Rally Car on the lock-stops – front corner nibbling a snowbank at the apex while the opposite corner leans on a wall and fires powder 15 feet in the air – is right up there. Right up there. But it’s not to be this time. The warm weather has forced a complete rethink of the route and even blizzard conditions for the rest of the week wouldn’t be enough to deliver the perfect winter rally. Recipe for perfect winter roads: heavy (like heavy, heavy) snow, semi-melt, deep-freeze, light snow shower. The semi-melt puts moisture into the road and snow base which, when frozen hard, provides a rock-solid ice base for the studded tyres to dig into. The freeze will also pack the snowbanks really hard, allowing the guys to go a gear higher through some corners. We’re missing a couple of elements of that recipe this week! This week will be about staying out of trouble and keeping as many studs in place as possible. That in itself provides an intriguing event, however. Let’s see who can drive smart as well as super-quick in these compromised and challenging conditions. -

2018 MEDIA GUIDE Rallye Deutschland August 16 - 19, 2018 ROUND 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 Rallye Deutschland August 16 - 19, 2018 HYUNDAI’S HELLO Welcome to Rallye Deutschland, Hyundai Motorsport’s home event, which takes place during a very exciting time for the WRC with both title battles finely balanced. Although last month’s Rally Finland didn’t produce the ultimate result for our team, Hayden finished just outside the podium places after a strong drive. Thierry and Nicolas continue to lead the Drivers’ championship with an advantage of 21 points, while the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team heads the Manufacturers’ championship by 26 points so there’s plenty of reason to be positive. I must also congratulate our HMDP crew of Jari and Antti for recording their first WRC2 podium of the year with second in that class. Rallye Deutschland is the first tarmac event on the calendar since Tour de Corse in April. Since then we’ve worked on improving the suspension, especially the dampers, and centre differential mapping with two aims in mind: to achieve more grip for the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC and find a better balance. This follows feedback from our drivers during Corsica where they reported being hampered by understeer. Our three drivers for Germany – Thierry, Dani and Andreas – have all sampled the changes during development testing and they also got the opportunity to finalise their set-ups during the recent pre-event test, which took place over five days so we could experience the vineyard roads and those within the Baumholder military range, which are very specific to this rally. -

MEDIA INFORMATION 2017 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Round 4: Che Guevara Energy Drink Tour de Corse-Rallye de France The MICHELIN Pilot Sport S5 and H5 take to the twisty mountain roads of the Tour de Corse - Rallye de France After the fiercely-fought start to the 2017 FIA World Rally Championship which has produced three different winners to date, round four takes teams to Corsica for the Tour de Corse-Rallye de France. In addition to having been brought forward in the calendar from its early-October slot in 2016, France’s round of the WRC is the first pure asphalt fixture of the year following the wintry Rallye Monte-Carlo, snowy Rally Sweden and the all-gravel Rally Mexico. It is consequently another exciting chance to see the more powerful latest-generation World Rally Cars in action with their spectacular new aerodynamics designed to keep them glued even more to the road, and Michelin has had to address the challenge posed by the bigger constraints placed on its asphalt tyres by today’s cars. For the 2017 Tour de Corse – Rallye de France, the French firm will provide its WRC partners with a choice of three different tyres: the soft-compound MICHELIN Pilot Sport S5, the harder H5 version and the latest 2017-spec MICHELIN Pilot Sport FW3 (FW = Full Wet). Designed for use in heavy rain, the latter was made available for the first time at last year’s Rallye Deutschland but has yet to be used on an event. The 2017 Tour de Corse-Rallye de France features a total distance of 1,082.20km, including 10 special stages totalling 316.76km. -
