Red Bull Der Lange Weg RED BULL DER LANGE WEG. 1971 Team of six atheltes / four finishers 1947 km on foot 85’510 vertical/m ascent 41 days 415 hours of walking 48 km ascent per day 2013 vertical meters per day CAN THIS BE BEATEN in 2018? WIEN - NIZZA - SKI NONSTOP What happened 1971? One of the most significant undertakings in skiing history Between the 21st. of March and April 29th of 1971 the Austrians Robert Kittl, Klaus Hoi, Hansjörg Farbmacher and Hans Mariacher were the first and until now the only ones which completed the entire crossing along the main divide of the European Alps. They were supported by Alois Schett who followed them by car and met up with them at certain points along the way. Otherwise the skiers were on their own. The team was perfectly selected and put together, they each belonged to the worlds best with their abilities and experience at the time. There were attempts to re-do this exceptional expedition, however no one until now was successful since. The team 1971 didn’t seek the easiest or fasted route, but the most interesting and challenging route along the main divide. The most well known, the highest and the most interesting peaks of the main divide of the alps were crossed. Therefore the route is defined for the re-enactment. At the time, the media followed their progress, so film as well as photo material exists of their trip. All details and notes of the trail, exist and can be used to recreate the exact same route. WIEN - NIZZA - SKI NONSTOP What is going to happen in 2018? We want to set a new record for the most significant undertaking in skiing history in the Alps. A team of 7 athletes will again start the attempt to follow the same track conquering the same summits, while beating the historical record of 41 days. A team of at least 4 have to reach Nizza. Will it be easier & faster with new equipment, techniques and methods of today's athletes? Or is the human factor still the deciding one? Modern equipment, new techniques and today's knowledge, can it be hindering or be an advantage? How have we developed in the 48 years that have passed by as skiing- mountaineers? How did the alps, the glaciers, the valleys, the huts, change over time? With proper equipment and training, it is ideally suited for fighting the close-in battfe commonly associated with mountain warfare. Mechanized infantry can\also enter the mountain battle, but it must be prepared to dismount and conduct operations on foot.

After some comments on alpine permafrost a short presentation of the investigated area including its glaciation is given. Then results of digging, temperature measuring of springs as well as measurements of the basical temperature of the winter snow cover are discussed. Thus the existence of permafrost in the Dachstein massive is proved for the first time. Also for the first time a map of permafrost distribution for a small area of the Northern Alps can be drawn.

    THE • VOL. LIII NOVEMBER I 942 NO. 265 THE NORDEND OF MONTE ROSA BY T. GRAHAM BROWN Substance of a lecture delivered before the Alpine Club, December g, 1941. T is curious to reflect that the ascent of the N ordend might have been one of the most popular in the Alps had the Dufourspitze been but 83 ft. lower. As things are, the mountain is relatively neglected. The usual route to its graceful summit lies off the beaten track, and more .often than not the N ordend is omitted during traverses of the Monte Rosa peaks ; parties from the Marinelli hut seem almost invariably to take the easier but more dangerous route to the Dufour­ spitze in preference to the more difficult ascent of the N ordend by its stupendous Macugnaga face ; the sensational Frontier arete, 1 which plunges to the Jagerjoch in vertical steps, has rarely been visited ; and (to the best of my knowledge) the wide and steep Weisstor (or N.E.) face of the N ordend has so far received attention from but a single climbing party. To these striking neglects may be added a fifth: on only one former occasion, and that was nearly thirty years ago, has the Nordend been the subject of a paper read before the Club.2 The event deserves to be recalled, because it was then that E. A. Broome described his expedition of 191 I, when, in the course of the day, he ascended the Macugnaga face from the Marinelli hut and descended by the ordinary route to the Riffelhaus the memorable achievement of a great climber who was in his sixty-seventh year at the time of the ascent.

The natural landscape provokes artists to revive it with architecture. Architects overcome technical limitations, physiographic, customary more or less picturesquely incorporating their works into the richness of natural forms. Many benefits come from this recklessness for the region. The hit trend is also appreciated for the triumph of technical thought. It puts into confusion at once because of the gradual takeover of the natural environment. The aim of the work is to search for solutions that would help preserve the beauty of the mountain environment and at the same time make the widest group of recipients available. Analyzing the above issues, the comparative method was used, presenting achievements in the field of high-altitude objects design in extreme physiographic conditions, implemented in the Alps region. The region has a developed ski and tourist infrastructure. It is an example of maintaining moderation and specific character, despite growing new needs and expectations from tourists and sportsmen.
