Aexylium Band Was Born in Varese (Italy) in 2014 by Trying to Combine the Typical Sound of Traditional Instruments (Flute, Violi Aexylium band was born in Varese (Italy) in 2014 by trying to combine the typical sound of traditional instruments (Flute, Violin, Bouzouki) with the modern ones of Metal music Being inspired by the main artists of the genre such as Eluveitie, Korpiklaani, Alestorm, Folkstone, they chose Folk Metal as their sound. The band consists of eight members. Aexylium played for the first time at Dumeltica International Music Festival in 2015; the feedback was positive and they successfully managed to play in other important gigs such as Montelago Celtic Festival, Malpaga Folk & Metal, Rock Inn Somma, Druidia and Strigarium in the following years. In July 2016 they released their first self-produced EP which is titled “The Blind Crow“and contains 3 songs. In the same year, the track ‘The blind crow’ was included in ‘Mister Folk Compilation IV’. In December 2017 they finished recording their first album, mixed and recorded by Davide Tavecchia at Twilight Studio, and mastered by Simone Mularoni at Domination Studio. Shrestha 1 Nityam Shrestha Dr. Ackerman CS 185c February 22, 2017 Celtic Pagan Music saved by Technology, Creativity and Belief Technology is now an integral part of everyone’s day-to-day life. After the industrial revolution (mid 1700s) and the digital revolution (late 1950s) our lives have been significantly improved. People are healthier, communication is easier, transportation is safer and the world is improving and becoming a better place to live. But these improvements have also changed the way we view and enjoy arts. Advancing technology also brought us many new forms of arts like graffiti (spray can), game arts (mobile/ web/ VR), 3D animations (games, movies, VR), sculptures (3D printing), etc. But technology has also shown us, both the better and the worst sides of it. With all these technological advancements people are forgetting old cultures and their art forms. Most people today are more familiar with native ancient traditions of the different cultures of the world, but barely of Europe. The Native American tradition, the tribal religions of Africa, the sophistication of Hindu belief and practice and the more recently revived Japanese tradition, Shinto, are widely acknowledge as the authentic native animistic tradition of their respective areas. In marked contrast, the European native tradition, from the massive civilizations of Greece and Rome to the barley documented tribal systems of the Picts, the Finns and other norther margins of the continent, has seen as having been obliterated totally. The Shrestha 2 people forgotten here, are the Celtic pagans. Their culture was superseded first by Christianity and Islam and, more recently, by post-Christian humanism.

  • Exploring the Chinese Metal Scene in Contemporary Chinese Society (1996-2015)
"THE SCREAMING SUCCESSOR": EXPLORING THE CHINESE METAL SCENE IN CONTEMPORARY CHINESE SOCIETY (1996-2015) Yu Zheng A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2016 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2016 Yu Zheng All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This research project explores the characteristics and the trajectory of metal development in China and examines how various factors have influenced the localization of this music scene. I examine three significant roles – musicians, audiences, and mediators, and focus on the interaction between the localized Chinese metal scene and metal globalization. This thesis project uses multiple methods, including textual analysis, observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews. In this thesis, I illustrate an image of the Chinese metal scene, present the characteristics and the development of metal musicians, fans, and mediators in China, discuss their contributions to scene’s construction, and analyze various internal and external factors that influence the localization of metal in China. After that, I argue that the development and the localization of the metal scene in China goes through three stages, the emerging stage (1988-1996), the underground stage (1997-2005), the indie stage (2006-present), with Chinese characteristics. And, this localized trajectory is influenced by the accessibility of metal resources, the rapid economic growth, urbanization, and the progress of modernization in China, and the overall development of cultural industry and international cultural communication. iv For Yisheng and our unborn baby! v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First of all, I would like to show my deepest gratitude to my advisor, Dr.

  • Viking, Pagan Or Folk? Distinguishing Possibilities for Metal Sub-Genres
ČLANCI ALEXANDER HOFMANN VIKING, PAGAN OR FOLK? DISTINGUISHING POSSIBILITIES FOR METAL SUB-GENRES Izvorni znanstveni članak / Original Scholarly Paper UDK: 78.036 "19/20" aBStraCt The different sub-genres of metal music, which have formed in the last decades, are not only of interest due to their diverse and unique characteristics, but also evidence a variety in metal music whereby its clichéd black and gloomy world gains a bit of color. This multitude of sub-genres will inevitably lead to musicians, fans and even researchers no longer being able to differentiate between the genres. With Viking, pagan, and folk metal, this interesting process of fusion is already taking place, although it is possible to distinguish Viking and pagan at least from folk metal. Keywords: instrumentation, metal sub-genres, musical analysis, popular music introDuCtion During the last few decades many different metal sub-genres have developed, from the classic, and especially from the extreme, metal genre. Comprising bands such as Ensiferum, Finntroll, Korpiklaani and Turisas – surprisingly only Finnish bands – so-called folk metal is one of these sub-genres, which became part of the metal mainstream during the 2000s.1 For Spracklen the popularity of Finnish folk metal is based on commercialization, while other possible reasons could be the national distinction from Norwegian black and Swedish death metal, or, at least in Finland, a phase of increased inclusion of folk elements in popular music. “The combination of a nationally institutionalized folk tradition and the transnational genre of […] metal”2 is also mentioned by Neilson as a reason for the success of Finnish folk metal.

  • Metal Matters. Heavy Metal Als Kultur Und Welt
Imke von Helden Glocal Metal Lokale Phänomene einer globalen Heavy Metal-Kultur Metal Goes Local Dieses Zitat des kanadischen Anthropologen »...for metalheads across the globe, metal is more Sam Dunn aus seinem Dokumentarfilm über die than music. More than an identity. Metal is freedom. globale Verbreitung des Heavy Metal ist ein In- And together, we are now a global tribe« diz dafür, in welchem Ausmaß und mit welchem Sam Dunn - GLobAL METAL (Kanada 2008). People in our country fall under the idea that we should copy America. And music goes under that, too. And I think it sucks, y’know, because I don’t think we should copy the States. I think we should have our own identity« (Global Metal, Kanada 2008, Sam Dunn).

ELUVEITIE & AMARANTHE 30.

  • Cultural Heritage and History in the Metal Scene
_Cultural Heritage and History in the Metal Scene _reem saouma_sophia molpheta simon pille_stefan de klepper Cultural heritage and History in the Metal Scene Cultural Heritage And History in the Metal Scene Belvedere Chair in The Chairgroup Land Use Planning Roel During, Marieke Muilwijk Wageningen, October 2007 Stefan de Klepper_forest and nature conservation Sophia Molpheta_landscape architecture and planning Simon Pille_landscape architecture and planning Reem Saouma_landscape architecture and planning abstract abstract This paper represents an inquiry on the use of history and cultural heritage in the metal scene. It is an attempt to show how history and cultural heritage can possibly be spread among people using an unconventional way. The followed research method was built on an explorative study that included an analysis of elements of the music, such as lyrics, performance and fashion, together with interviews of bands and people from the metal scene. However, the study focused on five different metal styles in Europe: the early metal (60’s and early 70’s), The new wave of British heavy metal (around the 80’s), the Swedish death metal (’90-present), the Norwegian black metal (’90-present) and the folk metal (mid 90’s-present). The analysis shows that cultural history plays a role in certain styles of metal or particular bands. Especially in Black metal and in the closely related Viking metal, the use of history and cultural heritage is most common. There are bands within these styles that tell stories through their lyrics and express the historical feeling by the overall image and appearances at concerts. The research shows how history and cultural heritage are used by many bands as an inspiration as well as how it can play a role in forming a common identity among fans and musicians.
