SONOC1 ANDREI POPA2 SOME PAINTINGS FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE BRUKENTHAL NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SIBIU AND THEIR RELATION WITH TWO HABSBURG CORONATION MEDALS Abstract: In the 18th c., the imperial portrait was an important instrument of propaganda, not only as painting of different dimensions, but also as a medal. Sometimes imperial medals were Mounted in a necklace, the medals were used also as a sign of an official dignity. Among them, of a particular importance are the coronation medals, because they were conferred to the most appreciated high officials, usually just at the occasion of their presence at the coronation ceremony, but maybe also when they came to Vienna to pay homage to their sovereign. Aiming not only to express loyalty towards the Imperial and Royal House in the most obvious way, but also as a sign of the highest favour, they were sometimes depicted in the portraits of the representatives of the Transylvanian elites. To be remembered by their fellow citizens for their loyalty towards the Crown, the heads of the Transylvanian Saxon delegations sent to Vienna to pay homage to the new monarchs used to order portraits ďapparat, whose inscriptions mention these events, as well as the names of the donors. CEU eTD Collection i Abstract The thesis analyzes Nicolae Ceaușescu’s redesign of Bucharest as part of the Romanian dictator’s national communism and cult of personality. The symbol of this cult and manifestation of nationalism was the Bucharest Political-Administrative Center. Scholars generally agree that an analysis of the continuation of nationalism in Romanian planning and architecture in the twentieth century is crucial for understanding Ceaușescu’s project for Bucharest. As such, the aim of this thesis is to brings a new perspective on the influence of Romanian 20th century planning and architecture on the construction of the Bucharest Political-Administrative Center. It also offers a new interpretation of the decision-making process behind the construction of the communist center. Using party archives, I argue that although nationalism continued to be used in Romanian planning and architecture after the communist takeover, the Ceaușescu regime differed significantly from both the Gheorghiu- Dej regime and the interwar period.

The title is awarded by the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation, a non-profit organization recognized in the European Commission’s White Paper, which aims to internationally acknowl- edge communities that value sport and create contexts favourable to its development for its inhabitants. Between Bucharest, the capital, and Brasov there are many trains daily, almost one every hour, and there are also frequent trains from other Romanian cities as well as a daily connection to Budapest, Hungary (via Oradea) and a EuroNight (fast night train) connection to Budapest via Arad. Also due to its affordability and comfort, train is the best way of reaching Brasov. Even though all Romanian trains are increasingly comfortable, try to take the InterCity (IC) trains. These are very modern and comfortable, as they are an initiative of the state railways to reinvigorate Romania's transport sector. "Rapid" trains are also comfortable and almost as fast as InterCities. "Accelerat" trains are also a fast alternative, lacking a little in the kind of comfort an InterCity or Rapid train would provide.
